Book International Trade in Forest Products

Download or read book International Trade in Forest Products written by G. Cornelis van Kooten and published by CABI. This book was released on 2020-12-07 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Because of the long-standing Canada-U.S. lumber trade dispute and the current pressure on the world's forests as a renewable energy source, much attention has been directed toward the modelling of international trade in wood products. Two types of trade models are described in this book: one is rooted in economic theory and mathematical programming, and the other consists of two econometric/statistical models--a gravity model rooted in theory and an approach known as GVAR that relies on time series analyses. The purpose of the book is to provide the background theory behind models and facilitate readers in easily constructing their own models to analyse policy questions that they wish to address, whether in forestry or some other sector. Examples in the book are meant to illustrate how models can be used to say something about a variety of issues, including identification of the gains and losses to various players in the North American softwood lumber business, and the potential for redirecting sales of lumber to countries outside the United States. The discussion is expanded to include other products besides lumber, and used to examine, for example, the effects of log export restrictions by one nation on all other forestry jurisdictions, the impacts of climate policies as they relate to the global forest sector, and the impact of oil prices on forest product markets throughout the world. This book will appeal to practising economists and researchers who wish to examine various policies that affect international trade, whether their interest is local or international in scope. Because the book provides the theoretical bases underlying various models, students and practitioners will find this a valuable reference book or supplementary textbook.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Swedish Forests, Lumber Industry, and Lumber Export Trade Swedish forests will never be cut out. Ou the contrary, there is no doubt that under the resent s stem of management the quantit of standing timber will e not on y maintained but increased throug reforestation, the drainage of swamp lands, and other measures. A glance at the map of Sweden will immediately show the great advantage which that country has in its network of rivers; the dis tance from the place where loggin operations are carried on to the nearest waterway is only a few m' es. Practically eve forest triet has been exploited; there are only a few areas in t e northern most part of the country where cutting has not been carried on, owing to the fact that the rivers have been unsuitable for floating legs. Book Understanding Key Issues of Sustainable Wood Production in the Pacific Northwest

Download or read book Understanding Key Issues of Sustainable Wood Production in the Pacific Northwest written by and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Researchers involved with the Pacific Northwest (PNW) Research Station Sustainable Wood Production Initiative have outlined some of the barriers and opportunities for sustainable wood production in the region. Sustainable wood production is defined as the capacity of forests to produce wood, products, and services on a long-term basis and in the context of human activity and use. The collective findings of these papers suggest that in the future, the regions wood supply will primarily come from private land, and the barriers and opportunities related to sustainable wood production will have more to do with future markets, harvest potential, land use changes, and sustainable forestry options than with traditional sustained yield outputs. Private lands in the PNW should be able to sustain recent historical harvest levels over the next 50 years, but regional changes in sawmilling capacity and uncertain market conditions may affect wood production in the region. Public perceptions of forestry, land use changes, and alternative forestry options are also discussed. These papers present preliminary findings and proposals for future work designed to help us understand the key issues related to sustainable wood production.
