Download or read book Writings on the Sober Life written by Alvise Cornaro and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2014-01-01 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alvise Cornaro (c.1484–1566), well born in Padua, was an energetic, religious man of formidable entrepreneurial skills. Critically ill – possibly with diabetes – around age 40, he resolved to abandon his sensual life. The healthier controlled diet led to his recovery, and later brought him to share this sober regime through his treatise, La vita sobria (1558). Its publication, with useful homilies for living to 100 years – proper lifestyle and proper personal diet – was a worldwide success, and his adoption of Galen's “quantity and quality,” while avoiding excess in food or drink, sound prescient to today's reader. This edition offers the most coherent, uncensored, and complete rendering of this Early Modern classic ever available in English, with Cornaro's Aggionta (“Addition”) translated here for the first time. An introduction and essay by the late scholar Marisa Milani offer biographical analysis for his theory and a history of its English editions. Also presented are letters by Cornaro's contemporaries commenting on the treatise, in addition to his eulogy (now viewed as having been written by Cornaro himself). A foreword by award-winning health journalist Greg Critser speaks to the continuing relevance of Cornaro's sixteenth-century style of self-help. Marisa Milani (1935–1997) was an eminent scholar, most notably on the Pavano poets and language. Her earlier works on Ruzzante, posthumously collected as El pì bel favelare del mondo: Saggi ruzzantiani, led to her 1983 critical edition on Alvise Cornaro.

This book was released on 2011-12-15 with total page 1185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Italian Literature before 1900 in English Translation provides the most complete record possible of texts from the early periods that have been translated into English, and published between 1929 and 2008. It lists works from all genres and subjects, and includes translations wherever they have appeared across the globe. In this annotated bibliography, Robin Healey covers over 5,200 distinct editions of pre-1900 Italian writings. Most entries are accompanied by useful notes providing information on authors, works, translators, and how the translations were received. Among the works by over 1,500 authors represented in this volume are hundreds of editions by Italy's most translated authors – Dante Alighieri, Machiavelli, and Boccaccio – and other hundreds which represent the author's only English translation. A significant number of entries describe works originally published in Latin. Together with Healey's Twentieth-Century Italian Literature in English Translation, this volume makes comprehensive information on translations accessible for schools, libraries, and those interested in comparative literature.
Download or read book Chasing Methuselah written by Todd T. W. Daly and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2021-02-04 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The quest to live much longer has moved from legend to the laboratory. Recent breakthroughs in genetics and pharmacology have put humanity on the precipice of slowing down human aging to extend the healthy life span. The promise of longer, healthier life is enormously attractive, and poses several challenging questions for Christians. Who wouldn’t want to live 120 years or more before dying quickly? How do we make sense of human aging in light of Jesus’ invitation to daily take up our crosses with the promise of the resurrection to come? Is there anything wrong with manipulating our bodies technologically to live longer? If so, how long is too long? Should aging itself be treated as a disease? In Chasing Methuselah, Todd Daly examines the modern biomedical anti-aging project from a Christian perspective, drawing on the ancient wisdom of the Desert Fathers, who believed that the incarnation opened a way for human life to regain the longevity of Adam and the biblical patriarchs through prayer and fasting. Daly balances these insights with the christological anthropology of Karl Barth, discussing the implications for human finitude, fear of death, and the use of anti-aging technology, weaving a path between outright condemnation and uncritical enthusiasm.

Download or read book Lent With George Herbert written by Tony Dickinson and published by SLG Press. This book was released on 2022 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fairacres Publication 194 The poems of George Herbert (1593–1633) have nurtured the faith of countless Anglican Christians, and others, since their posthumous publication in 1633. Described by the poet as ‘a picture of the many spiritual conflicts that have passed between God and my soul, before I could subject mine to the will of Jesus my Master’, Herbert’s poetry weaves together recognition of the glory and diversity of God’s creation and of the ingenuity of human beings in their attempts to map and control that creation, awareness of human frailty and sinfulness, and awed realisation of the infinite love of God. The themes of frailty and forgiveness underlying Herbert’s poetry also mark the season of Lent. In recognition of this, Tony Dickinson takes eight of the poems that tackle these great themes (relevant as much to the twenty-first century as to the seventeenth) and week by week through Lent, from Ash Wednesday to Easter Day, unpacks the language in which George Herbert explores them; language that often appears direct and simple, but whose simplicity frequently conceals a depth and density of meaning that few other writers can match.
