Book excerpt: This is the first biography in English of Lucullus, one of Rome's greatest soldiers, traditionally considered a degenerate. Paring back the legends and misconceptions surrounding his name, the book examines Lucullus as a soldier, politician and aesthete. Inheritor of the ideals of his friend Sulla, his career spans the last years of the Roman republic when it was governed under the constitution the dictator had devised. Through the eyes of Lucullus, the failure of that constitution is depicted.

Download or read book Plutarch s Lives Volume 2 of 4 written by Plutarch and published by Good Press. This book was released on 2023-08-12 with total page 465 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Plutarch's 'Lives', Volume 2 (of 4) is a collection of biographies of famous Greek and Roman figures, such as Alexander the Great and Julius Caesar. Written in the 1st century AD, Plutarch's work provides a unique insight into the lives and character of these historical figures, blending historical facts with moral lessons. The book is known for its vivid storytelling and in-depth analysis of the subjects' virtues and vices, making it a valuable resource for students of both history and philosophy. Plutarch's literary style is engaging and informative, making the biographies both entertaining and educational. Plutarch was a Greek historian and biographer known for his ethical essays and biographical works. His background in philosophy and his interest in the lives of important figures in history led him to write 'Lives', a series of parallel biographies of prominent Greeks and Romans. Plutarch's goal was not only to recount historical events but also to explore the moral character and virtues of the individuals he wrote about. I highly recommend 'Plutarch's Lives, Volume 2' to anyone interested in ancient history, philosophy, or biography. Plutarch's insightful analysis and vivid storytelling make this book a timeless classic that continues to be relevant today.

Book Cicero Rhetoric and Empire

Download or read book Cicero Rhetoric and Empire written by C. E. W. Steel and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2002-03-07 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cicero manipulated issues relevant to Rome's possession of an empire (provincial extortion, access to citizenship, and the distribution of military commands) in an important group of speeches: the Verrines, de imperio Cn. Pompei, pro Archia, pro Flacco, de provinciis consularibus, and pro Balbo. C.E.W. Steel examines the speeches' rhetorical techniques and aims in detail. Cicero's presentation of empire concentrates on the power wielded by individuals at the expense of wider questions of administrative structures. Thus the problems which arise in the running of an empire can be presented as the result of personal failings rather than endemic to the structures of government - as questions of morality rather than of administration. Steel argues that this concept is fundamentally flawed. The weakness cannot be explained simply as Cicero's lack of insight, but as an inevitable consequence of the uses to which he puts oratory in his political career: comparison with his contemporaries shows other leading figures producing much more radical approaches to the problems of empire.

Book Daily Life of the Ancient Romans

Download or read book Daily Life of the Ancient Romans written by David Matz and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2001-10-30 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Use this fascinating reference resource to find out what it meant to be a typical Ancient Roman. Using plenty of anecdotal material written by Romans themselves, this volume explores the ins and outs of daily living for ordinary people, from their homes, to the foods they ate, to the sports and games they enjoyed. The ancient civilization is brought to life, and students can easily make comparisons between the people of that culture and the people of our own, discovering the similarities and differences between the two. Many different aspects of life in Ancient Rome are presented to provide a full and varied picture. Discover what the education system was like and what the critics had to say about it. Find out who the most successful gladiators and charioteers were, the equivalent of our modern-day sports superstars. Examine what life was like for slaves. These details and more help to provide an understanding of this ancient society that at first glance may seem very foreign but that upon closer study seems to have much in common with modern day society.
