Book Luck Was My Companion

Download or read book Luck Was My Companion written by Rowland Charles Marshall and published by Agio Publishing House. This book was released on 2008 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this autobiography, LUCK WAS MY COMPANION, Rowland C. Marshall, who travelled throughout the globe visiting countries most people only dream about, tells of his many experiences in time of peace and war. He describes his early childhood and a career in the Merchant Service, including the seamy side, and his misfortunes with Malaria. The war year of 1942 saw him aboard an ill-fated merchant ship loaded with food, medical supplies and high explosives, bound for the beleaguered Island of Malta, whose people were starving. Facing almost certain death, he lived to fight on, unlike his shipmates, many of whom perished. By September of 1943 he was back in the thick of it, ferrying troops between Alexandria and Toranto during the invasion of Italy. Then on June 6, 1944, Liberation Day for Europe, he served aboard one of many hospital ships, ferrying wounded American soldiers from Omaha Beach. The author hopes some of his recounting will make you laugh or maybe at times shed a tear, as he did while writing his story. To this day he often looks back at the strange twists and turns that occurred throughout his life, to say, 'Luck has been my constant companion.'

Book excerpt: Winner of the Edgar Award for Young Adult Fiction! The other orphans say Margot is lucky. Lucky to survive the horrible accident that killed her family. Lucky to have her own room because she wakes up screaming every night. And finally, lucky to be chosen by a prestigious family to live at their remote country estate. But it wasn't luck that made the Suttons rescue Margot from her bleak existence at the group home. Margot was handpicked to be a companion to their silent, mysterious daughter, Agatha. At first, helping with Agatha--and getting to know her handsome younger brother--seems much better than the group home. But soon, the isolated house begins playing tricks on Margot’s mind, making her question everything she believes about the Suttons . . . and herself. Margot’s bad dreams may have stopped when she came to live with Agatha – but the real nightmare has just begun.

Book excerpt: Guild of Food Writer’s Awards, Highly Commended in ‘Specialist Subject Cookbook’ category (2022) André Simon Awards shortlisted (2022) "A beautiful book, and one which makes me want to cultivate my garden just as much as scurry to the kitchen." — Nigella Lawson "At its core this book is about cooking, but it's an essential and valuable resource for folk who love to grow their own herbs and cook. Sorted by individual herbs with detailed notes on how to grow and use them, it's going to be a book I will turn to a lot over the years." — Nik Sharma Herb is a plot-to-plate exploration of herbs that majors on the kitchen, with just enough of the simple art of growing to allow the reader to welcome a wealth of home-grown flavours into their kitchen. Author Mark Diacono is a gardener as well as a cook. Packed with ideas for enjoying and using herbs, Herb is much more than your average recipe book. Mark shares the techniques at the heart of sourcing, preparing and using herbs well, enabling you to make delicious food that is as rewarding in the process as it is in the end result. The book explores how to use herbs, when to deploy them, and how to capture those flavours to use when they might not be seasonally available. The reader will become familiar with the differences in flavour intensity, provenance, nutritional benefits and more. Focusing on the familiars including thyme, rosemary, basil, chives and bay, Herb also opens the door to a few lesser-known flavours. The recipes build on bringing your herbs alive – whether that’s a quickly swizzed parsley pesto when short of time on a weekday evening, or in wrapping a crumbly Lancashire cheese in lovage for a few weeks to infuse it with bitter earthiness. With a guide to sowing, planting, feeding and propagating herbs, there are also full plant descriptions and their main culinary affinities. Mark then looks at various ways to preserve herbs including making oils, drying, vinegars, syrups and freezing, before offering over 100 innovative recipes that make the most of your new herb knowledge.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The nightly custom of gathering around the campfire, and entertaining one another with stories, began in 1875, after Sabadu, a page of King Mtesa, had astonished his hearers with the legend of the "Blameless Priest." Our circle was free to all, and was frequently well attended; for when it was seen that the more accomplished narrators were suitably rewarded, and that there was a great deal of amusement to be derived, few could resist the temptation to approach and listen, unless fatigue or illness prevented them.

Book With the World s Great Travelers

Download or read book With the World s Great Travelers written by Various and published by e-artnow. This book was released on 2022-01-04 with total page 882 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The preface of this book tells that even though voyages are called mere "trips," distant lands didn't get more familiar. As the world became more open and voyages more often, the differences between foreign lands and continents became more evident as ever. This truth remains topical even today, 120 years after these words were put down on paper. Now "With the World's Great Travelers" lets you make a personal voyage through distance and time and see the most outstanding example of travel history in the world's literature. The book consists of essays by multiple authors, like Edward A. Pollard, a notable American Journalist; Charles Darwin, a famous scientist; Meriwether Lewis, a renowned explorer, one of the leaders of the Lewis and Clark Expedition, William Howard Russell, the most celebrated foreign journalist in America during the times of the Civil War and many others. This work gives a deep insight into how the world and traveling looked a century ago.
