The Ninth Master refuses and continues on to a castle high in the Karawanken Mountains where his target is the ageing Count Richter. Thomas resorts to a mediaeval torture to extract a second set of secrets held by the Count. Because Thomas holds these secrets, Herschel's hands are tied: Thomas cannot be killed because Herschel needs these secrets - and Thomas is now the only man who knows them. So Paths of Darkness top assassin - Cleaver - is sent to capture him and return him to Vienna. Lucinda retrieves the two crucifixion nails from where she had hidden them on Skellig Michael. Thomas instructs her to travel to Fort William in Scotland and to meet him there. However Grand Master Herschel thinks he knows why the Ninth Master is going there and orders Cleaver to follow him. Thomas flies into Aberdeen. He has a sexual encounter with a woman then ties her up as she is about to contact the police, believing he is a terrorist. To avoid road blocks and searches being undertaken for him, Thomas parachutes under cover of darkness into the area and Lucinda picks him up in her car. Thomas tells Lucinda that he must visit an American, Leroy Henderson, who lives in a remote fortified tower house. He possesses a third secret that Thomas requires. However, Grand Master Herschel has already transported Henderson away. Guessing that he might have done this, Thomas and Lucinda time travel a week back in time to the castle. They discover an extraordinary black magic ritual taking place but this doesn't prevent Thomas penetrating Henderson's mind and extracting the information he wants. Thomas now possesses the three elements to a secret code that will lead him to the remaining two crucifixion nails - if he can break the code. When Thomas and Lucinda return to their B&B at Fort William, the assassin Cleaver is waiting for them. He shoots Thomas with a dart containing a powerful neurotoxin that paralyses Thomas. He is placed in a box and flown to POD headquarters in Vienna. Cleaver also shoots Lucinda with two bullets. She appears to be dead and he carries her into her bedroom. He has lascivious plans to assault the dead psychic. However, through the power of the two crucifixion nails that hang round her neck, her body heals itself. She recovers and batters the astounded assassin unconscious - then travels to an airport where she hires a plane to fly her to Vienna, determined to rescue Thomas. Thomas refuses to reveal the code secrets to Grand Master Herschel who has him blinded as a punishment. Lucinda rescues him and together they crack the secret code. They fly to Le Mont Saint Michel - an abbey fortress built on an island off the north coast of France. Here they discover the third and fourth crucifixion nails and set off back to London, determined to wage war against the Fallen Lords of the Paths of Darkness and so rescue the world from its impending doom. But Great Lord Anzu, the First of the Fallen Lords, has dispatched the Dark Warriors of Destiny - and the Destroyer - to confront them and establish his Dark World ...

Book excerpt: Giovanni Andrea Gilio’s Dialogue on the Errors and Abuses of Painters (1564) is one of the first treatises on art published in the post-Tridentine period. It remains a key primary source for the discussion of the reform of art as it unfolded at the time of the Council of Trent and the Catholic Reformation. Relatively little is known about Gilio himself, a cleric from Fabriano, Italy. He was evidently familiar with Cardinal Alessandro Farnese’s lively court circle in Rome and dedicated his book to the cardinal. His text—available here in English in full for the first time—takes the form of a spirited dialogue among six protagonists, using the voices of each to present different points of view. Through their dialogue Gilio grapples with a host of issues, from the relationship between poetry and painting, to the function of religious images, to the effects such images have on viewers. The primary focus is the proper representation of history, and Michelangelo’s Last Judgment fresco in the Sistine Chapel is the exemplary case. Indeed, Michelangelo’s painting is both praised and condemned as an example of the possibilities and limits of art. Although Gilio’s dialogue is often quoted by art historians to point out the more controlling view of art and artists by the Roman Catholic Church, the unabridged text reveals the nuanced and provisional debates happening during this critical era.
