Book excerpt: It takes just one man to plunge the world into chaos ...This second book in The Lucinda Trilogy, continues Lucinda's fantasy adventure quest to discover the four nails from Christ's crucifixion and to save the world from destruction. Ethan Thomas, the Ninth Master, and Lucinda's one-time adversary, discovers who murdered his parents when he was a four-year old boy. He takes his revenge and learns the secret held by his father. Whilst he is doing that, Lucinda time travels back to 4th Century Palestine to rescue her friend Joe. Thomas flies to Vienna, Austria where the evil Fallen Lords of the Paths of Darkness have their earthly headquarters. Grand Master Herschel asks the renegade Thomas to recant and return to the Paths of Darkness. The Ninth Master refuses and continues on to a castle high in the Karawanken Mountains where his target is the ageing Count Richter. Thomas resorts to a mediaeval torture to extract a second set of secrets held by the Count. Because Thomas holds these secrets, Herschel's hands are tied: Thomas cannot be killed because Herschel needs these secrets - and Thomas is now the only man who knows them. So Paths of Darkness top assassin - Cleaver - is sent to capture him and return him to Vienna. Lucinda retrieves the two crucifixion nails from where she had hidden them on Skellig Michael. Thomas instructs her to travel to Fort William in Scotland and to meet him there. However Grand Master Herschel thinks he knows why the Ninth Master is going there and orders Cleaver to follow him. Thomas flies into Aberdeen. He has a sexual encounter with a woman then ties her up as she is about to contact the police, believing he is a terrorist. To avoid road blocks and searches being undertaken for him, Thomas parachutes under cover of darkness into the area and Lucinda picks him up in her car. Thomas tells Lucinda that he must visit an American, Leroy Henderson, who lives in a remote fortified tower house. He possesses a third secret that Thomas requires. However, Grand Master Herschel has already transported Henderson away. Guessing that he might have done this, Thomas and Lucinda time travel a week back in time to the castle. They discover an extraordinary black magic ritual taking place but this doesn't prevent Thomas penetrating Henderson's mind and extracting the information he wants. Thomas now possesses the three elements to a secret code that will lead him to the remaining two crucifixion nails - if he can break the code. When Thomas and Lucinda return to their B&B at Fort William, the assassin Cleaver is waiting for them. He shoots Thomas with a dart containing a powerful neurotoxin that paralyses Thomas. He is placed in a box and flown to POD headquarters in Vienna. Cleaver also shoots Lucinda with two bullets. She appears to be dead and he carries her into her bedroom. He has lascivious plans to assault the dead psychic. However, through the power of the two crucifixion nails that hang round her neck, her body heals itself. She recovers and batters the astounded assassin unconscious - then travels to an airport where she hires a plane to fly her to Vienna, determined to rescue Thomas. Thomas refuses to reveal the code secrets to Grand Master Herschel who has him blinded as a punishment. Lucinda rescues him and together they crack the secret code. They fly to Le Mont Saint Michel - an abbey fortress built on an island off the north coast of France. Here they discover the third and fourth crucifixion nails and set off back to London, determined to wage war against the Fallen Lords of the Paths of Darkness and so rescue the world from its impending doom. But Great Lord Anzu, the First of the Fallen Lords, has dispatched the Dark Warriors of Destiny - and the Destroyer - to confront them and establish his Dark World ...

Download or read book American Crucifixion written by Alex Beam and published by PublicAffairs. This book was released on 2014-04-22 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On June 27, 1844, a mob stormed the jail in the dusty frontier town of Carthage, Illinois. Clamorous and angry, they were hunting down a man they saw as a grave threat to their otherwise quiet lives: the founding prophet of Mormonism, Joseph Smith. They wanted blood. At thirty-nine years old, Smith had already lived an outsized life. In addition to starting his own religion and creating his own "Golden Bible" -- the Book of Mormon -- he had worked as a water-dowser and treasure hunter. He'd led his people to Ohio, then Missouri, then Illinois, where he founded a city larger than fledgling Chicago. He was running for president. And, secretly, he had married more than thirty women. In American Crucifixion, Alex Beam tells how Smith went from charismatic leader to public enemy: How his most seismic revelation -- the doctrine of polygamy -- created a rift among his people; how that schism turned to violence; and how, ultimately, Smith could not escape the consequences of his ambition and pride. Mormonism is America's largest and most enduring native religion, and the "martyrdom" of Joseph Smith is one of its transformational events. Smith's brutal assassination propelled the Mormons to colonize the American West and claim their place in the mainstream of American history. American Crucifixion is a gripping story of scandal and violence, with deep roots in our national identity.

Book Dialogue on the Errors and Abuses of Painters

Download or read book Dialogue on the Errors and Abuses of Painters written by Giovanni Andrea Gilio and published by Getty Publications. This book was released on 2018-04-17 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Giovanni Andrea Gilio’s Dialogue on the Errors and Abuses of Painters (1564) is one of the first treatises on art published in the post-Tridentine period. It remains a key primary source for the discussion of the reform of art as it unfolded at the time of the Council of Trent and the Catholic Reformation. Relatively little is known about Gilio himself, a cleric from Fabriano, Italy. He was evidently familiar with Cardinal Alessandro Farnese’s lively court circle in Rome and dedicated his book to the cardinal. His text—available here in English in full for the first time—takes the form of a spirited dialogue among six protagonists, using the voices of each to present different points of view. Through their dialogue Gilio grapples with a host of issues, from the relationship between poetry and painting, to the function of religious images, to the effects such images have on viewers. The primary focus is the proper representation of history, and Michelangelo’s Last Judgment fresco in the Sistine Chapel is the exemplary case. Indeed, Michelangelo’s painting is both praised and condemned as an example of the possibilities and limits of art. Although Gilio’s dialogue is often quoted by art historians to point out the more controlling view of art and artists by the Roman Catholic Church, the unabridged text reveals the nuanced and provisional debates happening during this critical era.

In a district of the city of Harbin, a haven for White Russian families since Russia’s Communist Revolution, Alina Kozlova must make a heartbreaking decision if her only child, Anya, is to survive the final days of World War II. White Gardenia sweeps across cultures and continents, from the glamorous nightclubs of Shanghai to the austerity of Cold War Soviet Russia in the 1960s, from a desolate island in the Pacific Ocean to a new life in post-war Australia. Both mother and daughter must make sacrifices, but is the price too high? Most importantly of all, will they ever find each other again? Rich in historical detail and reminiscent of stories by Kate Morton and Lucinda Riley, White Gardenia is a compelling and beautifully written tale about yearning, longing, and the lengths a mother will go to protect her child.

Book Spiritual Dimensions in the Music of Edmund Rubbra

Download or read book Spiritual Dimensions in the Music of Edmund Rubbra written by Lucinda Cradduck and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-12-20 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Edmund Rubbra’s music has given him a reputation as a ‘spiritual’ composer, who had an interest in Eastern thought, and a mid-life conversion to Roman Catholicism. This book takes a wide and detailed view of ‘spiritual’ dimensions or strands that were important in his life, positioning them both biographically and within the context of contemporaneous English culture. It proceeds to interpret through detailed analysis the ways these spiritual aspects are reflected in specific compositions. Thematical treatment of these spiritual issues, touching on Theosophy, dance, Eastern religions and thought, nature, the evolutionary theory of Teilhard de Chardin and the Christ figure, presents a multi-faceted view of Rubbra’s life and music. Its contribution to a scholarly re-evaluation of his place within twentieth-century British music and culture engages and meshes with several areas of current scholarly research in the arts and humanities, including academic interest in Theosophy, modernism and the arts, experimental dance and the Indian cultural renaissance and East–West musical interactions of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. It also adds to a burgeoning body of writings on music and spirituality, fuelled by the popularity of later twentieth-century and contemporary composers who make more overt spiritual references in their music.

Book Women Race Class

Download or read book Women Race Class written by Angela Y. Davis and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2011-06-29 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From one of our most important scholars and civil rights activist icon, a powerful study of the women’s liberation movement and the tangled knot of oppression facing Black women. “Angela Davis is herself a woman of undeniable courage. She should be heard.”—The New York Times Angela Davis provides a powerful history of the social and political influence of whiteness and elitism in feminism, from abolitionist days to the present, and demonstrates how the racist and classist biases of its leaders inevitably hampered any collective ambitions. While Black women were aided by some activists like Sarah and Angelina Grimke and the suffrage cause found unwavering support in Frederick Douglass, many women played on the fears of white supremacists for political gain rather than take an intersectional approach to liberation. Here, Davis not only contextualizes the legacy and pitfalls of civil and women’s rights activists, but also discusses Communist women, the murder of Emmitt Till, and Margaret Sanger’s racism. Davis shows readers how the inequalities between Black and white women influence the contemporary issues of rape, reproductive freedom, housework and child care in this bold and indispensable work.
