At four and twenty Victoria Huntington thought herself quite adept at fending off fortune hunters . . . until she came under siege from Lucas Colebrook, the darkly disturbing new Earl of Stonevale. Amidst the brightly plumed birds of the town, Lucas was a hawk. And when he held out the lure of moonlit rides and wild, reckless midnight escapades, Victoria found herself powerless to resist. But becoming Stonevale’s companion in adventure was far more dangerous undertaking than Victoria could ever imagine. For the attractive Earl would use her every weakness to woo her, to win her, and ultimately to wed her. And soon the amber-eyed lady would find herself ensconced in a crumbling mansion deep in the English countryside . . . where the real reason for her hasty marriage becomes all too apparent . . . and where the ghosts of her dark-stained past are waiting to rise up in a terrifying plot that will threaten her life, her honor, and the only man she could ever love.

Book Iris Murdoch

  • Author : Hilda D. Spear
  • Publisher : Bloomsbury Publishing
  • Release : 2006-10-23
  • ISBN : 0230207553
  • Pages : 160 pages

Download or read book Iris Murdoch written by Hilda D. Spear and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2006-10-23 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Iris Murdoch produced twenty-six novels in forty years. The last of these, Jackson's Dilemma, was published in 1995, four years before her death. Murdoch's interest in moral problems inclined her towards what could be seen as an unusual view of human character and human life, leading her to create bizarre situations and offer unsettling solutions which frequently challenge and intrigue the reader. This essential introduction to one of Britain's best-known writers guides the reader through the full range of Murdoch's fictional output, tracing basic patterns which run throughout Murdoch's work and showing how the novels help to elucidate one another. The revised, updated and expanded new edition takes into account certain details which have emerged following Murdoch's death in 1999, incorporates the latest scholarship and offers fuller treatment of a number of novels. The second edition also gives more weight to the development of the moral discourse which is predominant in Murdoch's work. From the mid-sixties onwards, Murdoch was intensely concerned with the problems of Good and Evil in a godless world. In the later novels, particularly those of the eighties and nineties, she posited the possibility of mystic personalities who influence others from a position beyond the normal parameters of our world. Hilda D. Spear examines these mystic, and mysterious, fictions in the later chapters of her study, and argues that Jackson's Dilemma should be viewed as Murdoch's 'unfinished novel'.

Book Doc Lucas Usn

  • Author : Blair Beebe

  • Pages : 280 pages

Download or read book Doc Lucas Usn written by Blair Beebe and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2010-06-17 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Blair Beebe, M.D. Medical lessons from Vietnam; what did we learn? Almost fifty years after the beginning of American involvement in the Vietnam War, we still remain embroiled in military actions that generate disease, disability, and death. Frontline physicians who were in places like Afghanistan, Iraq, Bosnia, Herzegovina, and Vietnam faced the medical consequences of war every day. My new novel, Doc Lucas USN, based on real people and real events, brings the war down to a human scale, one person at a time. History gives us statistics and dates, but fiction helps us to better understand the meaning behind those facts. One of my old professors defined history as lies we tell about dead people. We understand more from reading Homer, Sophocles, Shakespeare, Margaret Mitchell, and Stephen Ambrose than we ever learned from dry history textbooks. Paradoxically, the truth comes out in fiction. During my time in Vietnam, and for many years after, I listened to stories from other physicians who served during the war and from naval aviators and marines who faced combat every day. I also heard different points of view from Vietnamese civilians who had come to America to escape the chaos after the war. Their eyewitness accounts are the true history, but unless someone writes them down, we lose them forever. Moreover, individual stories may have little meaning to us if they lack context. Ive often heard both veterans and civilians say, I dont talk about my experiences, because anyone who wasnt there could never understand how bad it was. Thats why we need a novel to give us a complete account in an organized way. Each character and each scene moves the action to develop a central theme about the war. We want more than anecdotes. We want to understand the how and the why of the unfolding tragedy. Doc Lucas not only recounts the stories, he lives them. We feel his anxiety, his terror, and at times, his joy. When things go wrong, we know why, and we can feel his despair. In the good times, and there are many, we laugh along with him. In the end, Doc Lucas learns important lessons about himself and his values centered on human rights and the relief of suffering. He emerges from the war better equipped to take his place with stronger convictions about his role in his society.

Book Iris Murdoch and the Others

Download or read book Iris Murdoch and the Others written by Paul S. Fiddes and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2021-12-02 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 'others' examined by Fiddes are mainly those with whom Murdoch entered into explicit dialogue in her novels and philosophical writing - including Immanuel Kant, Simone Weil, Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Rudolph Bultmann, Paul Tillich, Don Cupitt, Donald Mackinnon and Jacques Derrida. This 'historic' dialogue is, however, placed within a wider dialogue between literature and theology being conducted by the author, and 'others' are brought into relation with Murdoch in order to illuminate this more extensive conversation - notably the poet Gerard Manley Hopkins and the feminist philosopher Julia Kristeva. The book demonstrates that characteristic themes in Murdoch's novels and philosophy - the love of the Good, the death of the ego, illusory consolations, the death of God, the modifying of the will by 'waiting', the sublime and the beautiful, and attention to other things and persons - all take on a greater meaning when placed in the context of her life-long conversation with theology. The exploration of this context is deepened in this volume by reference to annotations and notes that Murdoch made in a number of theological books in her personal library.

Book LITTLE MRS COLLINS Charlotte Lucas A young lady without Pride or Prejudice

Download or read book LITTLE MRS COLLINS Charlotte Lucas A young lady without Pride or Prejudice written by Peggy Tulip and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2019-02-05 with total page 165 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Charlotte Collins, wife of the Parson and mistress of Hunsford Parsonage for not yet one year, was a very happy woman indeed who occasionally pinched herself at disbelief at the sudden, extraordinary change in circumstances that had made her so. She admired Rosings, a large handsome dwelling some hundreds of yards down the lane from the Parsonage, but only the exterior. She considered everything within it too large and too grand for human comfort. Since she went infrequently, she demonstrated a proper respect, and then returned gratefully to the beloved Parsonage. Since she saw little to admire and much to criticise, she simply reminded herself, frequently, that Lady Catherine against all expectation and logic had bestowed a valuable Benefice upon an unknown, untried priest. Thus, at a remove, giving Charlotte the home and life that she loved and cherished. Her gratitude for that was beyond expressing.

Book Post mortem Divine Retribution

Download or read book Post mortem Divine Retribution written by Angukali Rotokha and published by Langham Publishing. This book was released on 2023-05-31 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While a Christian understanding of divine judgement tends to focus on the afterlife, the Hebrew Bible is far more concerned with divine retribution as something experienced in this life. Yet if the same God enacts both, should there not be significant continuity between biblical accounts of divine retribution, whether experienced in this world or the hereafter? In this study, Dr. Angukali Rotokha provides an overview of Old Testament and Second Temple sources that express conceptions of post-mortem judgement. Alongside these passages, she examines the perspective on judgement presented in Deuteronomy, with its orientation towards divine retribution as experienced on this side of death. She explores Deuteronomy’s varying emphases on the impersonal, anthropocentric, theocentric, and limited aspects of divine retribution, as well as the relevance of these conceptions to the descriptions of post-mortem judgement found in Isaiah, Daniel, 1 Enoch, and 2 Maccabees. In clarifying points of continuity and discontinuity between earthly and post-mortem divine retribution, she provides a foundation for deeper insight into the Judeo-Christian understanding of both God’s judgement and God’s grace.

Book An Institutional Theory of Law

Download or read book An Institutional Theory of Law written by Peter Morton and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1998 with total page 442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modern law is to be understood as comprising norms which are implicated in particular forms of life which -- animated by the modern values of individualism -- have emerged in democratic polities. Failure to understand the nature of such fundamental institutional forms as 'society' and 'state',and of the need to appraise the central institutions of the democractic polity against the demands of legitimacy, has had serious consequences for political and legal theory in recent times. In An Institutional Theory of Law, Morton provides a fundamental philosophical critique of the assumptions ofpositivist jurisprudence and an attack on the foundationalism of contemporary legal philosophy. His prime concern is to distinguish between the different fields of law -- penal, civil, and public -- taking as his starting point the careful analysis of the institutions in a democracy within whichlegal language and norms are generated. Offering an original, coherent and systematic exposition of law in society today, Peter Morton sheds new, important light on legal practices and relations through comparison with an ideal type of legal system. With this book, Peter Morton offers readers a major contribution to our understanding oflaw in society in the 1990s. As such it will be of great interest to scholars of legal theory, political science, and political constitution.
