OTHER NONFERROUS METALS - 12. FERROUS METALS - BIBLIOGRAPHY - INDEX - Excerpt from Book (short): Preface - The impact or cold extrusion of metals is a "chipless machining" process that can greatly reduce costs of material and labor if properly applied. Within certain limitations in shape, some parts can be produced by this process that often require only trimming to length. On others, the secondary operations are reduced greatly over those required for several of the competing processes. Finally, certain components can be made that can be produced by no other method. Impact extrusion can be employed for the production of parts from a wide range of metallic materials. In commercial production at present are components produced from aluminum, copper, lead, magnesium, tin, zinc and their alloys and various steels. In the development stage are parts produced from less common metals, such as titanium and molybdenum. The aim of this book is to present a coordinated description of impact extrusion. Its purpose is to present the information required by an engineer to determine whether the process is applicable to his products, and to assist the metallurgist in selecting the metal to be used. The book is based on personal experience, talks, and correspondence with producers of components, and a search of the free-world technical literature. It is divided into two parts. The first deals with the underlying principles and the characteristics of the process; the second, with the metals being extruded and the products.

Book Metal Deformation Processing

Download or read book Metal Deformation Processing written by F. W. Boulger and published by . This book was released on 1967 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As part of the Metalworking Processes and Equipment Program, information was collected on deformation characteristics of metals and their effect on processing operations. The report presents the information collected from technical engineering reports on Government contracts and from general engineering and metallurgical publications. The objective is to help the nonspecialist in recognizing the implications of scientific findings and in applying them in specific operations. This report contains a series of articles covering the following subjects: Ductile Fracture; Application of High Pressure to the Forming of Brittle Metals; Superplasticity; Lubrication in Metal-Deformation Processes; Swaging; Adiabatic Conditions in Deformation Processing; Residual Stresses produced by Deformation. These subjects are treated in two ways: (1) generalized discussions of common processes point out why specific variables must be modified in order to deform certain types of metals satisfactorily; and (2) data on the more difficult-to-form metals are used to illustrate the principles, limitations, and effects of the processes. Book TECHNOLOGY OF METAL FORMING PROCESSES

Download or read book TECHNOLOGY OF METAL FORMING PROCESSES written by SURENDER KUMAR and published by PHI Learning Pvt. Ltd.. This book was released on 2008-06-20 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comprehensive text presents the subject of metalworking by offering a clear account of the theory and applications of metal forming processes relevant to engineering practice. It is designed to serve as a textbook for undergraduate and postgraduate students of mechanical engineering, production engineering, industrial engineering, and metallurgical engineering. The first seven chapters are devoted to basic concepts to equip the students with the background material on mechanics, material sciences and to provide them with a sound foundation in the theory of plasticity. In addition, the importance of friction and lubrication in metal forming processes is adequately highlighted. In the next nine chapters the reader is exposed to a richly detailed discussion of specific forming processes (including the lubricated metal forming processes) and new and powerful techniques are presented (load bounding and slip line field) for solving engineering problems in metal forming. The book then moves on to forming of polymers and also covers metal powder preforms, highlighting recent developments. In the concluding portions of the book, the important factors such as force, power requirements, formability and machinability in the study of individual processes, are briefly discussed. Finally, the application of computer-aided analysis in the metalworking processes has been demonstrated, being the demand in this competitive scenario. Several chapter-end exercises are included to aid better understanding of the theory.
