Book Lubricating Oils Greases and Petroleum Products Manufacturing Handbook

Download or read book Lubricating Oils Greases and Petroleum Products Manufacturing Handbook written by NPCS Board of Consultants & Engineers and published by NIIR PROJECT CONSULTANCY SERVICES. This book was released on 2018-01-12 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lubricating oils are specially formulated oils that reduce friction between moving parts and help maintain mechanical parts. Lubricating oil is a thick fatty oil used to make the parts of a machine move smoothly. The lubricants market is growing due to the growing automotive industry, increased consumer awareness and government regulations regarding lubricants. Lubricants are used in vehicles to reduce friction, which leads to a longer lifespan and reduced wear and tear on the vehicles. The growth of lubricants usage in the automotive industry is mainly due to an increasing demand for heavy duty vehicles and light passenger vehicles, and an increase in the average lifespan of the vehicles. As saving conventional resources and cutting emissions and energy have become central environmental matters, the lubricants are progressively attracting more consumer awareness. Greases are made by using oil (typically mineral oil) and mixing it with thickeners (such as lithium-based soaps). They may also contain additional lubricating particles, such as graphite, molybdenum disulfide, or polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE, aka Teflon). White grease is made from inedible hog fat and has a low content of free fatty acids. Yellow grease is made from darker parts of the hog and may include parts used to make white grease. Brown grease contains beef and mutton fats as well as hog fats. Synthetic grease may consist of synthetic oils containing standard soaps or may be a mixture of synthetic thickeners, or bases, in petroleum oils. Silicones are greases in which both the base and the oil are synthetic. Asia-Pacific represents the largest and the fastest growing market, with volume sales projected to grow at a CAGR of 5% over the analysis period. Automotive lubricants represents the largest product market, with engine oils generating a major chunk of the revenues. The market for industrial lubricants is supported by the huge demand for industrial engine oils and growing consumption of process oils. The major content of the book are Food and Technical Grade White Oils and Highly Refined Paraffins, Base Oils from Petroleum, Formulation of Automotive Lubricants, Lubricating Grease, Aviation Lubricants, Formulation and Structure of Lubricating Greases, Marine Lubricants, Industrial Lubricants, Refining of Petroleum, Lubricating Oils, Greases and Solid Lubricants, Refinery Products, Crude Distillation and Photographs of Machinery with Suppliers Contact Details. This book will be a mile stone for its readers who are new to this sector, will also find useful for professionals, entrepreneurs, those studying and researching in this important area. Book Lubricating Oil for Wheeled Military Vehicles with Heavy Duty Diesel Engines

Download or read book Lubricating Oil for Wheeled Military Vehicles with Heavy Duty Diesel Engines written by Fuels and Lubricants TC 1 Engine Lubrication and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This SAE Standard describes lubricating oils meeting the physical, chemical and performance requirements of American Petroleum Institute (API) performance categories CF and CF-2, CI 4, supplement CI-4 PLUS, and SAE J300. These oils are suitable for the lubrication of wheeled vehicles with compression-ignition (diesel) engines. This document supersedes the military's Commercial Item Description (CID) A-A-52306.The conversion of the commercial item descriptions (CID) AA-52306 to SAE J2363 in November 1998 was done as an effort to align military needs with commercial manufacturers requirements and suppliers products. It is our belief that the API Engine Oil Licensing and Certification System (EOLCS), the American Chemistry Council (ACC) Petroleum Additives Product Approval Code of Practice provide a robust framework of requirements and oversight to allow the Department of Defense to purchase these products directly, with the understanding that only products with a formal API license and meeting the most current Heavy Duty Diesel Engine Oil requirements will be procured.

Book Lubricants

Download or read book Lubricants written by Marika Torbacke and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2014-05-12 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Those working with tribology often have a background in mechanical engineering, while people working with lubricant development have a chemistry/chemical engineering background. This means they have a tradition of approaching problems in different ways. Today’s product development puts higher demands on timing and quality, requiring collaboration between people with different backgrounds. However, they can lack understanding of each other’s challenges as well as a common language, and so this book aims to bridge the gap between these two areas. Lubricants: Introduction to Properties and Performance provides an easy to understand overview of tribology and lubricant chemistry. The first part of the book is theoretical and provides an introduction to tribological contact, friction, wear and lubrication, as well as the basic concepts regarding properties and the most commonly made analyses on lubricants. Base fluids and their properties and common additives used in lubricants are also covered. The second part of the book is hands-on and introduces the reader to the actual formulations and the evaluation of their performance. Different applications and their corresponding lubricant formulations are considered and tribological test methods are discussed. Finally used oil characterisation and surface characterisation are covered which give the reader an introduction to different methods of characterising used oils and surfaces, respectively. Key features: Combines chemistry and tribology of lubricants into one unified approach Covers the fundamental theory, describing lubricant properties as well as base fluids and additives Contains practical information on the formulations of lubricants and evaluates their performance Considers applications of lubricants in hydraulics, gears and combustion engines Lubricants: Introduction to Properties and Performance is a comprehensive reference for industry practitioners (tribologists, lubricant technicians, and lubricant chemists, etc) and is also an excellent source of information for graduate and undergraduate students.

Book Passenger Car and Heavy Truck Cold Cranking Studies Effects of Oil Viscosity and Vehicle Type

Download or read book Passenger Car and Heavy Truck Cold Cranking Studies Effects of Oil Viscosity and Vehicle Type written by AG. Alexander and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 1960's and 1970's, engine cold cranking studies on reference oils served as a basis for the development of a standardized laboratory test which measured an oil's viscosity under the appropriate temperature and shear rate conditions (the Cold Cranking Simulator or CCS). However, when the original CCS method (Apparent Viscosity of Engine Oils at Low Temperature Using the Cold-Cranking Simulator, D 2602) was modified to reflect a change from single temperature determinations (-18°C) to a multi-temperature method, concerns regarding test precision and the response of viscoelastic oils prevented the revision of the method to an ASTM standard. The recent development of modified CCS procedures to address these concerns has been somewhat hindered by the lack of available reference oils with supporting engine cranking data. To address this need, Esso Petroleum Canada initiated a limited study of engine cold cranking on four test oils, in 1987. Five different late model passenger cars equipped with 4- and 6-cylinder gasoline engines were subjected to repeated cold starts at temperatures between -15°C and -25°C in an All-Weather Chassis Dynamometer facility. The vehicle cranking results and samples of the test oils were forwarded to the CCS task force in 1987. More recently, Esso Petroleum Canada has undertaken a detailed cold start/pumpability evaluation of multigrade engine oils in three different heavy duty trucks. Cold cranking data from these diesel engines, in addition to the previous gasoline engine studies are discussed with respect to oil viscosity, operating temperature and vehicle effects.
