Download or read book Nightmare Envy and Other Stories written by George Blaustein and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018-01-05 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What has it meant to be an Americanist? What did it mean to be an Americanist through fascism, war, and occupation? Nightmare Envy and Other Stories is a study of Americanist writing and institutions in the 20th century. Four chapters trace four routes through the mid-twentieth century. The first chapter is the hidden history of American Studies in the United States, Europe and Japan. The second is the strange career of "national character" in anthropology. The third is a contest between military occupation and cultural diplomacy in Europe. The fourth is the emergence and fate of the "American Renaissance," as the scholar and literary critic F.O. Matthiessen carried a canon of radical literature across the Iron Curtain. Each chapter culminates in the postwar period, when the ruin of postwar Europe led writers and intellectuals on both sides of the Atlantic to understand America in new ways. Many of our modern myths of the United States and Europe were formed in this moment. Some saw the United States assume the mantle of cultural redeemer. Others saw a stereotypical America, rich in civilization but poor in culture, overtake a stereotypical Europe, rich in culture and equally rich in disaster. Drawing on American and European archives, the book weaves cultural, intellectual, and diplomatic history, with portraits of Matthiessen, Margaret Mead, Ruth Benedict, David Riesman, Alfred Kazin, and Ralph Ellison. It excavates the history of the Salzburg Seminar in American Civilization, where displaced persons, former Nazis, budding Communists, and glad-handing Americans met on the common ground of American culture. Others found keys to their own contexts in American books, reading Moby-Dick in the ruins. Nightmare Envy and Other Stories chronicles American encounters with European disaster, European encounters with American fiction, and the chasms over which culture had to reach.

Download or read book Boy From the North Country written by Dr. Jason Durant and published by Archway Publishing. This book was released on 2024-04-08 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Boy From the North Country is a humorous, poignant, and sometimes painful memoir. Written from the perspective of a gay psychologist who survived growing up in rural Northern New York after being abandoned by his father, this is a story about finding healing in mindfulness, accepting and recovering from trauma, and getting about the business of living. In this powerful self-help memoir, Dr. Durant takes us from the winding backroads of Northern New York while describing white-knuckle tales of parental volatility. Told with the energy and suspense of a car chase, the book careens from stories of childhood innocence in Upstate New York, to the late-night parties in gay San Francisco in an attempt to tell us how one man finds himself navigating back from the isolation imposed by trauma. It is a story of survival. Part Beautiful Thing, part A Place at the Table, Boy From the North Country is written by a clinical psychologist who learned how to survive as a gay kid in rural America...the hard way. Combining insights from his studies of trauma as a psychologist, his own meditation on the trials of his life, and from the personal narratives told to him by his patients at his Manhattan practice, Dr. Durant’s story provides both a cautionary tale on what happens when we abandon the needs of our gay kids, and offers a bit of hope for those struggling to survive.
Download or read book The Nail and Other Stories written by Pedro Antonio de Alarcón and published by Bucknell University Press. This book was released on 1997 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, eight stories written by Pedro Antonio de Alarcon have been brought together in English for the first time. The nail in "The Nail" is found driven into a disinterred skull, and if some of the events are implausible and others incredible, it is also true that there is considerable suspense and mystery. "The Cornet" draws more heavily on historical reality, with its depiction of the horror of civil war and factual detail. Noteworthy for its first-person narration and rapid-fire dialogue, "The Cornet" paints an episode of fraternal love and the power of the will. "The Orderly," although set against the same Carlist War background, has more to do with a military "attitude" than a Carlist "War", and describes the transformation effected in one officer by one orderly. The War of Independence (1808-14) was fought against Napoleon and his attempt to place his brother Joseph on the Spanish throne. After years of horrendous carnage and the Duke of Wellington's victory at Vitoria, the "Little Corporal" renounced the Spanish crown. The War of Independence stories - "The French Sympathizer" and "The Mayor of Lapeza"--Have been known to generations of Spanish readers, especially for their theme of patriotism. These two, together with "Long Live the Pope!" and "The Guardian Angel," extol the heroism and courage of the Spanish people. "The Foreigner," the story of a young Pole who had been conscripted into Napoleon's army, looks at Spain and two of her soldiers through the eyes of a Spanish muleteer.
