Book Stainless Steels and Alloys

Download or read book Stainless Steels and Alloys written by Zoia Duriagina and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2019-02-13 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Materials science is the magic that allows us to change the chemical composition and microstructure of material to regulate its corrosion-mechanical, technological, and functional properties. Five major classes of stainless steels are widely used: ferritic, austenitic, martensitic, duplex, and precipitation hardening. Austenitic stainless steels are extensively used for service down to as low as the temperature of liquid helium (-269oC). This is largely due to the lack of a clearly defined transition from ductile to brittle fracture in impact toughness testing. Steels with ferritic or martensitic structures show a sudden change from ductile (safe) to brittle (unsafe) fracture over a small temperature difference. Even the best of these steels shows this behavior at temperatures higher than -100oC and in many cases only just below zero. Various types of stainless steel are used across the whole temperature range from ambient to 1100oC. This book will be useful to scientists, engineers, masters, graduate students, and students. I hope readers will enjoy this book and that it will serve to create new materials with unique properties.

Book Surface Hardening of Stainless Steel

Download or read book Surface Hardening of Stainless Steel written by Andr√© Paulo Tschiptschin and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The addition of nitrogen to stainless steel improves mechanical and corrosion properties. Nitrogen-bearing stainless steel (HNSS) is a new corrosion-resistant alloy class exhibiting better tribological properties. High-pressure and powder metallurgy techniques were developed for the fabrication of HNSS. Solid-state routes allow nitrogen introduction through thermochemical, implantation, or plasma surface treatments. High-temperature gas nitriding (HTGN), carried out in an N2 atmosphere in the 1000¬∞C range, allows N uptake, obtaining thick, ~0.5,Äì1.0 wt.% N austenitic cases. HTGN is different from conventional nitriding, performed in the 500¬∞C range, where intense CrxNy precipitation occurs, impairing the corrosion resistance. Low-temperature plasma nitriding (LTPN) introduces more N in solution, and colossal supersaturated expanded phases (~45 at.%N) are formed. N supersaturation and compressive stresses increase the hardness of the surface layer to 10,Äì14¬†GPa. Ferritic, martensitic, duplex, and precipitation-hardened stainless steels can be surface-treated by LTPN, obtaining expanded ferrite and martensite. However, single LTPN stainless steel may prematurely fail when submitted to high loading, as the thin and hard expanded layers collapse due to lack of load-bearing capacity. Duplex-nitriding treatment (HTGN¬†+¬†LTPN) results in a thick nitrogen-rich hardened austenite substrate layer, granting mechanical support and adhesion to the expanded austenite layer.

Book Austenitic Steels at Low Temperatures

Download or read book Austenitic Steels at Low Temperatures written by T. Horiuchi and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The need for alternate energy sources has led to the develop ment of prototype fusion and MHD reactors. Both possible energy systems in current designs usually require the use of magnetic fields for plasma confinement and concentration. For the creation and maintenance of large 5 to 15 tesla magnetic fields, supercon ducting magnets appear more economical. But the high magnetic fields create large forces, and the complexities of the conceptual reactors create severe space restrictions. The combination of re quirements, plus the desire to keep construction costs at a mini mum, has created a need for stronger structural alloys for service at liquid helium temperature (4 K). The complexity of the required structures requires that these alloys be weldable. Furthermore, since the plasma is influenced by magnetic fields and since magnet ic forces from the use of ferromagnetic materials in many configur ations may be additive, the best structural alloy for most applica tions should be nonmagnetic. These requirements have led to consideration of higher strength austenitic steels. Strength increases at low temperatures are achieved by the addition of nitrogen. The stability of the austenitic structure is retained by adding manganese instead of nickel, which is more expensive. Research to develop these higher strength austenitic steels is in process, primarily in Japan and the United States.

Book The Structural Evolution During Low Temperature Carburization of 17 7 Precipitation Hardened Stainless Steel

Download or read book The Structural Evolution During Low Temperature Carburization of 17 7 Precipitation Hardened Stainless Steel written by Chieh-Wen Chen and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 107 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Low temperature paraequilibrium carburization is an effective method to enhance surface hardness and corrosion resistance in austenitic stainless steels, provided that equilibrium carbide formation is suppressed [1]. In this study, 17-7 precipitation-hardening stainless steel (PH SS) was subjected to paraequilibrium carburization at 350 and 380 °C. Metallographic images taken on etched cross sections of carburized samples and the hardness depth profile are consistent with the results found in carburized austenitic stainless steels -- a hardened, etch-resistant surface layer can be formed. Besides, experimental results from X-ray Diffraction (XRD), magnetic force microscopy (MFM), electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) of carburized 17-7 PH SS have shown a carburization-induced transformation form martensite to austenite during paraequilibrium carburization, which results from the known ability of carbon to act as an austenite stabilizer. Although EBSD results reveal that e-ferrite remains the same phase after paraequilibrium carburization, a higher carbon concentration than the calculated value using the CALPHAD method in e-ferrite was measured. In this work, the carburization-induced phase transformation and the effect of low temperature carburization on 17-7 PH SS have been investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray energy dispersive spectrometry (XEDS), Auger electron spectroscopy (AES), XRD, EBSD and TEM. The goal of this study is to identify the structural evolution and transformation mechanism in carburized 17-7 PH SS in order to understand the relationship between carburization and the martensitic transformation.

Book Tribology and Surface Engineering

Download or read book Tribology and Surface Engineering written by Aleksander Lisiecki and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2020-01-15 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book covers very important issues, not only scientific in nature but, ultimately, for industry and the economy. Wear and deterioration of surface properties during operation is a natural and unavoidable phenomenon. However, minimizing the degree of wear is of great importance for the entire economy, as illustrated by the example of the US economy, for which the loss of natural resources as a direct cause of friction and wear exceeds 6% of the Gross National Product. This book showcases the valuable knowledge revealed from both theoretical and practical research results in the field of advanced technologies of coatings and surface modification, as well as wear and tribological characteristics of advanced materials and surface layers. Therefore, it is hoped that this book will be a valuable resource and helpful tool for scientists, engineers, and students in the field of surface engineering, materials science, and manufacturing engineering.
