Book excerpt: In many respects, the science of materials has only fully utilized two of its three fundamental tools - the variables of temperature and chemical composition. Pressure, the third fundamental variable altering materials, is in many ways the most remarkable, as it spans some 60 orders of magnitude in the universe. High-pressure science has experienced tremendous growth, particularly in the last few years. With recent developments in static and dynamic compression techniques, extreme pressure and temperature conditions can now be produced and carefully controlled over a wide range. Moreover, a new generation of analytical probes, many based on third-generation synchrotron radiation sources, have been developed and can now be applied for accurate determination of the structural, dynamical, and electronic properties of matter under extreme conditions. Finally, developments in computational techniques and advances in fundamental theory tested against bountiful new experimental results are both deepening our understanding of materials as a whole and guiding subsequent experimental work with new predictions. It was for this reason that this course on high-pressure science was held at the International School of Physics "Enrico Fermi" School in July 2001. Though presented in a physics forum, the title “High-Pressure Phenomena” was chosen to reflect the broad scope of the field and the diversity of recent findings. Indeed, the field spans fundamental physics and chemistry, materials science and technology, the geosciences, planetary science and astrophysics, as well as biology. The highly interdisciplinary character of the field was central to the organization of the school, though the sheer breadth of the field meant that many topics could be treated in only a cursory fashion while others were examined more in depth. The aim of the school was to present the state-of-the-art in techniques used in modern high-pressure research, highlighting those topics where applications of these techniques are currently having a major impact.

The intervening period has seen major development with both experiment and theory. On the experimental side there have been ad vances with very high speed photography and data recording that provide detailed information on fluid and interface motion. Major developments in both computer hardware and software have also led to extensive improvement in our understand ing of bubble and interface dynamics although development is still limited by the sheer complexity of the laminar and turbulent flow regimes often associated with bubbly flows. The symposium attracts wide and extensive interest from engineers, physical, chemical, biological and medical scientists and applied mathematicians. The sci entific committee sought to achieve a balance between theory and experiment over a range of fields in bubble dynamics and interface phenomena. It was our intention to emphasise both the breadth and recent developments in these various fields and to encourage cross-fertilisation of ideas on both experimental techniques and theo retical developments. It was organized by the Japan Association for Inclusion Chemistry together with the International Organization Committee, with the auspices of sixteen societies and associations in Japan. This event was the first joint meeting with the hope of unifying the above two symposia. The program of the symposium consisted of 142 papers, including 14 invited papers. The invited papers and some selected topics were presented verbally, and all the other 118 papers were displayed in poster sessions. The symposium was held at Hoshi University in Tokyo. Due to the multidisciplinary nature of the subjects treated, the scope and subjects were grouped into two parts. In the first group, the chemistry of cyclodextrins, synthetic organic hosts, inorganic and metal complex hosts and layered hosts were treated. In the second group applications in various fields, biomimetic aspects, physicochemical aspects, selectivity, stereo-specificity and other aspects were discussed. The scientific sessions were carried out in a really vivid atmosphere. The number of participants viz 50 from 19 overseas countries and 253 domestic partici pants exceeded our expectation.
