In the P2P architecture, users not only consume video, but also forward it to other users. Thus, P2P systems scale better than client-server systems as users bring resources to the system. The challenge is to achieve low-latency and robust video dissemination by overcoming a number of adversarial aspects and challenges -- peer dynamics, heterogeneous uplink bandwidth of peers, heterogeneous hardware and capabilities of peers, and peer-wise connection restrictions due to NATs/firewalls. This dissertation presents Stanford Peer-to-Peer Multicast (SPPM), a P2P video streaming system. SPPM is designed to achieve low-latency and robust streaming by constructing an overlay of multiple complementary trees and dynamically rearranging the position of peers by Active Overlay Management in a distributed fashion. Next, we extend SPPM for providing playback control to users by time-shifted streaming. To perform time-shifted streaming, peers store past portions of video and forward them to other users when requested, thereby reducing server load. To further alleviate server load, we propose fast prefetching, by which peers can disseminate content quickly. Finally, we present a way to accommodate mobile users. Video transcoding is often required to adapt video for the mobile users. We propose interleaved distributed transcoding (IDT), which allows a video stream to be transcoded at multiple peers that are more capable than mobile users. IDT is shown not only to reduce computation required at a peer but also to achieve higher error resilience in case of peer failure or packet loss.

Book excerpt: Video multicast offers a scalable solution for large-scale television distribution. For commercial-grade video multicast services such as Internet Protocol Television (IPTV), it is often challenging to meet a set of conflicting design goals, including high video quality, low request response time and good system scalability. This dissertation addresses these issues by developing a decentralized peer-assistance architecture and integrating it with streaming-specific source and channel coding techniques to deliver multicast video in a timely, reliable and scalable way. Video quality is negatively affected by network packet loss. An existing framework to simultaneously address packet loss and request response delay is to combine multicast with a unicast service that provides both packet loss repair and fast stream startup functionalities. Typically, servers that provide the unicast service could become the system bottleneck. To mitigate this problem, we propose an alternative distributed solution to partially shift the burden of the unicast servers to receivers of the multicast. Using a Peer-Assisted Repair (PAR) protocol, we demonstrate that packet repairs can be delivered reliably on time using a combination of server-peer coordination and redundant repairs. PAR can be naturally extended to a Peer-Assisted Startup (PAS) protocol to facilitate fast stream startup, where a missing portion of the multicast stream is treated as a long erasure burst to be repaired. In these applications, we show that video transcoding can be seamlessly integrated to provide improved robustness to packet loss, reduced stream startup latency and improved system scalability. Erasure correcting coding plays an essential role in the peer-assistance architecture. To understand how to mitigate its delay into the stream startup process, we explore the design of erasure correcting codes that takes into account a decoding delay constraint. Modeling the peer-assisted unicast service as communication over a set of parallel links, we propose a practical construction of parallel-link block erasure correcting code, where each source packet is decoded at the sink on-the-fly with a strict decoding deadline. The proposed code handles two types of common errors in the upper layers of packet-switched networks -- bursty packet loss and link outages. We further show that the proposed code construction is delay-optimal among all codes that achieve the Singleton bound. The proposed decentralized architecture requires in-network video transcoding at the multicast peer receivers, where it is often desirable to use a scheme with low complexity, such as open-loop requantization-based transcoding. A known drawback of this scheme is the requantization distortion drift problem. We develop an analytical model to capture the distortion drift effect and show that this drawback can be largely mitigated through parameter optimization. We demonstrate its effectiveness in the transcoded-to-primary stream switching problem in fast stream startup.

Abstract: We consider the video-on-demand (VoD) streaming problem in a Peer-to-Peer (P2P) network in a decentralized model, in which peers have no global information about the network. Assuming that only one server has all the chunks, the objective is to stream M chunks to N peers in the network such that small latency and good fluency are achieved by all peers. We design a simple and decentralized protocol in which each peer maintains a constant number of neighbors and only need to communicate with one of them chosen uniformly at random every time. Moreover, the maximum number of communications established on each peer every time is also bounded by a constant. Our theoretical analysis for the model guarantees that the latency of each peer in our protocol is at most O(〖log〗 DEGREES2 N), which is an O(logN) approximation of any optimal protocol. Moreover, we provide non-trivial upper and lower bounds related to the communication details, which give key insights as to why our simple protocol achieves almost-optimal performance. We also show by experiment that even under the setting of bounded connection, bounded transmission and decentralization, our protocol ensures that almost all peers in the dynamic P2P VoD network can achieve low latency and good fluency in different kinds of network topologies. In our protocol, peers' benefits are not compromised too much when they behave unselfishly by disseminating their neighbors' downloading requests, which is very important in real world application. Experiment shows that our protocol is robust against selfish peers who block their up-streams: similar performance can be maintained under the existence of (a small fraction of) selfish peers. In the Big Trajectory Data Join problem, we develop a novel bounding technique, which enables trajectories to be pruned significantly. We further design a fast sweep line algorithm with rectangle bound for each trajectory as the heuristic information, which can be used to improve the query efficiency.
