Book Low energy Electron Scattering from Atomic Oxygen

Download or read book Low energy Electron Scattering from Atomic Oxygen written by R. H. NEYNABER and published by . This book was released on 1961 with total page 1 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The total cross section for the scattering of electrons by atomic O was measured as a function of electron energy from 2.3 to 11.6 ev. The number of electrons scattered from a region defined by the intersection of an electron beam and a modulated molecular O beam was compared with the number scattered when the O beam was partially dissociated. A radio-frequency discharge dissociated about 30% of the molecules. The degree of dissociation was measured with a mass spectrometer. From the data, the ratios of atomic to molecular scattering cross sections were obtained. The absolute atomic values were calculated by multiplying these ratios by the molecular O cross sections obtained by Bruche (Ann. Physik 83:1065, 1957). The result is a virtually constant cross section of 6.2! 0.5 a2o in the entire energy range studied. These results are compared with 5 theoretical estimates. (Author).

Book Elastic Scattering of Low energy Electrons from Oxygen

Download or read book Elastic Scattering of Low energy Electrons from Oxygen written by William Lewis Johnson and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The cross sections for the elastic scattering of electrons from atomic oxygen are calculated in the energy range between 0 and 13.6 electron volts. Polarization of the atom is included by using a term in the potential function which has the correct asymptotic behavior and which vanishes at the origin. Previous theoretical and experimental results are discussed.

Book The Effect of Several Configuration Interaction Target States on the Elastic Scattering of Low energy Electrons by Complex Atoms

Download or read book The Effect of Several Configuration Interaction Target States on the Elastic Scattering of Low energy Electrons by Complex Atoms written by Ed R. Smith and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The total wave function (target plus incident electron) is represented by a close coupling expansion. For complex atoms such as atomaic helium and oxygen, the effects of configuration interaction target states are discussed and analyzed, in part. For atomic helium, the doublet S partial-wave elastic cross section obtained using a He configuration interaction ground state is virtually identical with the corresponding cross section obtained using a Roothaan-Hartree-Fock ground state. In all cases studied, the elastic phase shift is shown to increase with the addition of atomic states and explicit correlation states into the expansion for the total wave function. For atomic oxygen, the quartet P partial-wave elastic phase shift can increase to such an extent as to introduce a 'resonance' behavior into the low-energy part of the elastic cross section. Finally, a second procedure is discussed for including correlation states when CI target states are used in the close-coupling expansion.

Book Low energy Electron Scattering from Atoms and Molecules a Model

Download or read book Low energy Electron Scattering from Atoms and Molecules a Model written by Carl J. Lenander and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A simple model is proposed for the calculation of free-electron wave functions for low-energy electrons incident upon neutral atoms. The region of interaction of the electron with the atom may be separated into three regions, according to the importance of potential: Coulomb plus exchange; Coulomb; and far-field induced polarization. The division of regions is based on mathematical and physical reasons for the characteristic behavior of wave functions in the scattering problem. Examples are given for the elastic scattering of electrons from nitrogen, oxygen and argon. The agreement with experiment and effective-range theory is good. The application of the method to prediction of low-energy electron scattering from homonuclear diatomic molecules is discussed. (Author).

Book Absolute Measurements of Total Cross Sections for the Scattering of Low energy Electrons by Atomic and Molecular Oxygen

Download or read book Absolute Measurements of Total Cross Sections for the Scattering of Low energy Electrons by Atomic and Molecular Oxygen written by Gabriel Sunshine and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 39 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The atom beam recoil technique was used to measure absolute total cross sections for the scattering of electrons by atomic and molecular oxygen at 22 energies between 0.5 and 11.3 eV, with additional data obtained up to 100 eV. In this method, a modulated electron beam cross-fires an atom beam, whose attenuation at the modulation frequency is observed. The angular resolution in the electron polar scattering angle ranges from about 15.6 degrees at 1 eV to 9.6 degrees at 12 eV, for 0, and from about 18.5 degrees at 1 eV to 11.4 degrees at 12 eV, for 02. Our absolute values for 02 between 0.5 and 11.3 eV are between 10 and 20% higher than those of Bruche, while the shape of the curve agrees well. The atomic cross sections vary from about 5.3 sq. A at 0.5 eV to 8.3 sq. A at 11.3 eV, with an estimated error of 20% except for the 0.5 eV point which has an error of 30%. These results are in excellent agreement with semi-empirical calculations of Cooper and Martin and Robinson and Geltman, as well as with the polarized orbitals calculation of Temkin. (Author).
