Book Low Cycle Fatigue of Cast Austenitic Steel

Download or read book Low Cycle Fatigue of Cast Austenitic Steel written by Xijia Wu and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 21 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cast austenitic stainless steel 1.4848 is used to manufacture automotive exhaust system components. Low cycle fatigue (LCF) of 1.4848 austenitic steel was investigated through strain controlled fatigue testing at strain rates of 0.02/s, 0.002/s, and 0.0002/s in the temperature range from room temperature (RT) to 900°C. Its cyclic behavior was characterized in relation to deformation mechanisms. At RT, the material behavior was rate independent and cyclically stable, which occurred by plasticity. The material exhibited significant cyclic hardening at intermediate temperatures, 400°C to 600°C, with negative strain-rate sensitivity. In this temperature range, dynamic strain aging (DSA) presumably occurred due to slip dragging solute atoms. At high temperatures, 800°C and 900°C, the material exhibited positive rate dependence in the hysteresis behavior, and the cyclic stress response tended to stabilize with increasing cycles. The high temperature behavior was presumably controlled by a combination of plasticity and dislocation-glide creep. The integrated creep-fatigue theory (ICFT) was used to describe the deformation and life behaviors based on the identified mechanisms, which were corroborated by fractographic observations.

Book Behavior of Materials Under Conditions of Thermal Stress

Download or read book Behavior of Materials Under Conditions of Thermal Stress written by S. S. Manson and published by . This book was released on 1953 with total page 730 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A review is presented of available information on the behavior of brittle and ductile materials under conditions of thermal stress and thermal shock. For brittle materials, a simple formula relating physical properties to thermal-shock resistance are derived and used to determine the relative significance of two indices currently in use for rating materials. The importance of simulating operating conditions in thermal-shock testing is deduced from the formula and is experimentally illustrated by showing that BeO could be both inferior or superior to Al2O3 in thermal shock depending on the testing conditions. For ductile materials, thermal-shock resistance depends upon the complex interrelation among several metallurgical variables which seriously affect strength and ductility. These variables are briefly discussed and illustrated from literature sources. The importance of simulating operating conditions in tests for rating ductile materials is especially to be emphasized because of the importance of testing conditions in metallurgy. A number of practical methods that have been used to minimize the deleterious effects of thermal stress and thermal shock are outlined.

Book Mapping of Low Cycle Fatigue Mechanisms at Elevated Temperatures for an Austenitic Stainless Steel

Download or read book Mapping of Low Cycle Fatigue Mechanisms at Elevated Temperatures for an Austenitic Stainless Steel written by K. Kanazawa and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mapping of low cycle fatigue mechanisms at elevated temperatures is attempted for a better understanding of the elevated temperature, low cycle fatigue behavior of an austenitic stainless steel. Results of strain-controlled, uniaxial low cycle fatigue tests on a solution-treated Type 310 stainless steel were used in the analysis. The experiments were performed at 15 temperatures that ranged from room temperature to 800°C and under four strain rate conditions that ranged from 6.7 x 10-3 s-1 to 6.7 x 10-6 s-1. Modes of variation, both in stress amplitude and in fatigue life, are classified and plotted against temperature-strain rate coordinates. By superposing the two maps, one can easily find the principal factors that govern the fatigue life for any given conditions of temperature and strain rate. The proposed idea of mapping is believed to have wide applicability (e.g., for selecting materials and predicting fatigue behavior under service conditions).

Book Low Cycle Fatigue and Elasto Plastic Behaviour of Materials

Download or read book Low Cycle Fatigue and Elasto Plastic Behaviour of Materials written by P.D. Portella and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1998-09-30 with total page 890 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 4th International Conference on Low Cycle Fatigue and Elasto-Plastic Behaviour of Materials was held from 7-11 September 1998 in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany. In response to a call for papers, nearly 200 extended abstracts from 32 countries were submitted to the organizing committee. These papers were presented at the conference as invited lectures or short contributions and as oral or poster presentation. All the papers were presented in poster form in extended poster sessions–a peculiarity of the LCF Conferences which allows an intense, thorough discussion of all contributions. Each chapter provides a comprehensive overview of a materials class or a given subject. Many contributions could have been included in two or even three chapters and so, in order to give a better overview of the content, the reader will find a subject index, a material index and an author index in the back of the book.

Book Influence of Material Microstructure on Low Cycle Fatigue Failure with Particular Reference to Austenitic Steel

Download or read book Influence of Material Microstructure on Low Cycle Fatigue Failure with Particular Reference to Austenitic Steel written by J. Wareing and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 17 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A study has been made of the low-cycle fatigue behavior of austenitic stainless steels and a magnesium alloy over a wide range of temperature. The effects of microstructural variation on fatigue life of these materials which exhibit different crystal structures and deformation modes have been studied by thermo-mechanically treating material prior to testing and by inducing grain boundary creep cavitation during elevated temperature unbalanced creep-fatigue cycles. For balanced cycles microstructural changes result in moderate variations in fatigue life, despite changes in failure mode from trans- to intercrystalline. On the other hand, the introduction of discrete creep-type grain boundary cavities during elevated temperature unbalanced creep-fatigue cycles can cause an order of magnitude reduction in fatigue life. The effects observed in these two materials are rationalized in terms of current theories of fatigue failure and serve as a basis of assessing other materials.

Book Metal Plasticity and Fatigue at High Temperature

Download or read book Metal Plasticity and Fatigue at High Temperature written by Denis Benasciutti and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2020-05-20 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In several industrial fields (such as automotive, steelmaking, aerospace, and fire protection systems) metals need to withstand a combination of cyclic loadings and high temperatures. In this condition, they usually exhibit an amount—more or less pronounced—of plastic deformation, often accompanied by creep or stress-relaxation phenomena. Plastic deformation under the action of cyclic loadings may cause fatigue cracks to appear, eventually leading to failures after a few cycles. In estimating the material strength under such loading conditions, the high-temperature material behavior needs to be considered against cyclic loading and creep, the experimental strength to isothermal/non-isothermal cyclic loadings and, not least of all, the choice and experimental calibration of numerical material models and the selection of the most comprehensive design approach. This book is a series of recent scientific contributions addressing several topics in the field of experimental characterization and physical-based modeling of material behavior and design methods against high-temperature loadings, with emphasis on the correlation between microstructure and strength. Several material types are considered, from stainless steel, aluminum alloys, Ni-based superalloys, spheroidal graphite iron, and copper alloys. The quality of scientific contributions in this book can assist scholars and scientists with their research in the field of metal plasticity, creep, and low-cycle fatigue.
