Beginning in the North America and spreading to Europe, the airline passenger market has witnessed a growing intensity in price-based competition. This intensified competition has been facilitated by policy deregulation initiatives until the emergence of the phenomenon Low Cost Airlines. European Low Cost Airlines have changed people's leisure and travel habits, opening up direct services between city pairs that were not available before. The present thesis aims at analysing the European Low Cost Carriers (LCCs) business model from the perspective of its rapid expansion on the air travel market. In conjunction with the liberalisation of commercial aviation the LCCs' impacts on the European community have been identified in line with the sustainable transport concept recognized as a common goal in the two European Commission's strategic documents: Lisbon Agenda and European Sustainable Development Strategy. The European low cost model is examined in terms; its business model and strategic positioning; the LCCs' positive and negative impacts after its rapid growth; the sector dynamics and its long term sustainability. This LCC multi-dimensional view imposes the main questions of the current work in search for broad analysis of the LCCs trend: "What are the essential characteristics of the LCCs business model?";" How it affects the EU community?"; and "What driving forces stand behind the LCCs model?". Travellers in the United States have benefited from this concept since the 1970s; whereas, the development in Europe has been much more recent. Lately, LCCs have been quite a hot topic especially since the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001. Many LCCs have amazed investors with their financial performance, as they successfully earned profits in a time when most conventional carriers reported major losses. In Europe, LCCs have entered the market in order to gain market share and to take part in the success of the business. In Germany, the LCC market has taken off with the emergence of two new carriers in the end of 2002. To best understand the low-cost concept, the evolution of LCCs in the United States and in Europe is examined in the second chapter. Furthermore, the background of the most successful LCC Southwest, still being the role model for other LCCs, is presented. In the third chapter the competition theory of Michael Porter is discussed in order to be able to analyse the competitive strategies followed by the LCCs in the chapter four. The fifth chapter gives a brief outline on the most striving marketing strategies among LCCs. Marketing strategies are examined in the fifth chapter. Moreover, Southwest Airlines, the pioneer of the Low Cost business model is currently the largest U.S. carrier in terms of passengers. It should be of no surprise then that the impact of LCCs on airfares and airline markets in general has attracted a lot of attention from economists, policy makers and the general public. In this dissertation I will address several limitations of the previous literature on the topic of the impact of LCCs on airfares.

Book excerpt: Low-cost air carriers have been growing aggressively in many regions around the world and today offer a significant proportion of the available flight and seat capacity in the markets where they operate. This thesis studies the airline capacity evolution of low-cost carriers (LCCs) between 2009 and 2018 in several different types of market regions, both long and short-haul as well as mature versus emerging air travel markets. Between 2009 and 2018, domestic India and domestic China had the fastest growth in total airline capacity, growing at a CAGR of 12.0% and 11.1% respectively. The more mature markets saw much slower growth - the intra-Europe region grew at a 5.6% CAGR while both the domestic US and domestic Australia regions grew at a CAGR less than 3% during the 10-year period. The domestic India region had the highest gain in low-cost carrier share of capacity, which grew by 26 points - from 43% of domestic capacity in 2009 to 69% in 2018. The growth of low-cost carrier capacity share was much smaller or even negative in other regions: 10 points in intra-Europe (from 40% to 50%), 9 points in domestic China (from 3% to 12%), 9 points in domestic US (31% to 40%), 7 points in the transatlantic region (2% to 9%) and -22 points in domestic Australia (50% to 28%). In the mature markets analyzed (except Australia), much of the growth in the low-cost carrier sector has come from ultra-low-cost carriers adding capacity as traditional LCCs are now moving upmarket due to increasing costs. While total capacities in the emerging markets grew rapidly, the growth has come from different sources. LCCs in India have grown significantly, primarily due to the very large demand for low-fare air travel in the country. On the other hand, much of the growth in China has come from legacy carriers; the slower growth in the Chinese LCC sector is explained by unsupportive government regulations and a lack of low-cost airport infrastructure. LCCs operating in the transatlantic region have also seen slow growth due to the various difficulties of operating low-cost in long haul sectors, with many LCCs going bankrupt and ceasing operations.
