This book was released on 2016-11-17 with total page 1407 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Herein you will find 5 books containing 84 old Eastern European folk and fairy tales, plus tales of dragons, both magnanimous and evil, tales of princes on their white chargers dashing in to rescue princesses in distress and tales of the little people - the fairy folk who stitch together each and every fairy tale. These books were bestsellers when they were first published, some over 120 years ago, at a time when people REALLY DID BELIEVE in fairies. These are tales from the forests and lane-side hedgerows as well as tales of fairy dances, which only ever occur at midnight under a full moon. And then there are tales of how lowly laborers applied their brains to a situation to win the hand of princesses and become kings of kingdoms. Plus there are other tales of how kings, forever protective of their precious princesses, set ever more difficult challenges to those wanting to win the hand of their daughters, who, of course, are the fairest and most beautiful in all the land! Ideal for parents, grandparents and lovers of fairy tales and of all things magic! In addition this is a unique collection for primary/elementary school libraries. TEACHERS read a page or two from each story at the end of the school day and have your students queuing up to hear the next part of the story day after day. Download or read book The Mammoth Book of Superstition written by Roy Bainton and published by Robinson. This book was released on 2016-11-10 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rather than providing a dictionary of superstitions, of which there are already numerous excellent, exhaustive and, in many cases, academic works which list superstitions from A to Z, Bainton gives us an entertaining flight over the terrain, landing from time to time in more thought-provoking areas. He offers an overview of humanity's often illogical and irrational persistence in seeking good luck and avoiding misfortune. While Steve Roud's two excellent books - The Penguin Dictionary of Superstitions and his Pocket Guide - and Philippa Waring's 1970 Dictionary concentrate on the British Isles, Bainton casts his net much wider. There are many origins which warrant the full back story, such as Friday the thirteenth and the Knights Templar, or the demonisation of the domestic cat resulting in 'cat holocausts' throughout Europe led by the Popes and the Inquisition. The whole is presented as a comprehensive, entertaining narrative flow, though it is, of course, a book that could be dipped into, and includes a thorough bibliography. Schoenberg, who developed the twelve-tone technique in music, was a notorious triskaidekaphobe. When the title of his opera Moses und Aaron resulted in a title with thirteen letters, he renamed it Moses und Aron. He believed he would die in his seventy-sixth year (7 + 6 = 13) and he was correct; he also died on Friday the thirteenth at thirteen minutes before midnight. As Sigmund Freud wrote, 'Superstition is in large part the expectation of trouble; and a person who has harboured frequent evil wishes against others, but has been brought up to be good and has therefore repressed such wishes into the unconscious, will be especially ready to expect punishment for his unconscious wickedness in the form of trouble threatening him from without.'

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Irv's still employed at the mental hospital, a place where all the people who don't "fit in" get jobs behind locked doors. It's a crazy circus and Irv's life is far from settling down. A free-loading porn stud and con man moves into our lad's apartment, and the jerk won't leave! It gets worse. Irv discovers the place where humanity hides it's most shameful secret. And it's not in the Buckhead Steak 'n Brew where Irv becomes a salad boy/dishwasher. And it's not at the Cloisters Restaurant where Irv get pushed into bussing tables while tripping on acid. And it's not in Europe where he meets three people who change his life in ways he only read about in Sc-Fi novels and mystical books. Actually that "shameful secret" is no secret at all, yet only Irv wants to know it. Will our friend ever find his way back to Normal? Not yet. Irving Podolsky resides in the mind of this writer and within the trilogy, Irv's Odyssey. As your storyteller, I'd like to share the adventure with your younger YOU, that which seeks fun, romance and a wild ride into the Unknown. "It's forceful, funny, and has the ring of truth. I looked forward to getting back to it each night, and that's a great sign that the book is ALIVE." - Daniel Asa Rose - NEA Literary Fellow, Book Reviewer, Travel Columnist and Author of his latest book, the acclaimed memoir Larry's Kidney

Download or read book Ascent to Love written by Peter J. Leithart and published by Canon Press & Book Service. This book was released on 2001 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As one of the supreme Christian epic poems, Dante's Divine Comedy provides not only far more personality and emotional depth than the pagan epics, it also opens up all the issues on which Western history turns - truth, beauty, goodness, sin, sanctification, and triumph. For all that, C.S. Lewis loved the Comedy for its seemingly effortless poetry. In this guide Peter Leithart uses a biblical angle to open up the Comedy for students, high school and up. He begins his discussion by examining the meaning and place of the courtly love tradition and then introduces us to the varied levels of meaning throughout the work. In the heart of the guide, Leithart walks us carefully through the craft and symbolism of each progressive stage - Inferno, Purgatorio, and Paradiso. Each section contains helpful study questions.
