Join a girl as she helps a mama and papa bird build a nest in her bathroom, hatch their eggs, and teach their babies to fly away. Renata and her Papi are hard at work at renovating their bathroom. Renata can't wait to build castles of bubbles in the deep, old-fashioned bathtub. But one morning, she finds dried leaves and pine needles heaped on a shelf in the corner. How did they get there? She soon realizes that a bird has built a nest on the shelf, and inside it are four rosy eggs! Weeks pass, and Renata watches as the wrens come and go, building a home in her bathroom... until, one day, with a little help from Renata, the birds are ready to fly.

Download or read book The Subversive Copy Editor written by Carol Fisher Saller and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2009-08-01 with total page 151 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Each year writers and editors submit over three thousand grammar and style questions to the Q&A page at The Chicago Manual of Style Online. Some are arcane, some simply hilarious—and one editor, Carol Fisher Saller, reads every single one of them. All too often she notes a classic author-editor standoff, wherein both parties refuse to compromise on the "rights" and "wrongs" of prose styling: "This author is giving me a fit." "I wish that I could just DEMAND the use of the serial comma at all times." "My author wants his preface to come at the end of the book. This just seems ridiculous to me. I mean, it’s not a post-face." In The Subversive Copy Editor, Saller casts aside this adversarial view and suggests new strategies for keeping the peace. Emphasizing habits of carefulness, transparency, and flexibility, she shows copy editors how to build an environment of trust and cooperation. One chapter takes on the difficult author; another speaks to writers themselves. Throughout, the focus is on serving the reader, even if it means breaking "rules" along the way. Saller’s own foibles and misadventures provide ample material: "I mess up all the time," she confesses. "It’s how I know things." Writers, Saller acknowledges, are only half the challenge, as copy editors can also make trouble for themselves. (Does any other book have an index entry that says "terrorists. See copy editors"?) The book includes helpful sections on e-mail etiquette, work-flow management, prioritizing, and organizing computer files. One chapter even addresses the special concerns of freelance editors. Saller’s emphasis on negotiation and flexibility will surprise many copy editors who have absorbed, along with the dos and don’ts of their stylebooks, an attitude that their way is the right way. In encouraging copy editors to banish their ignorance and disorganization, insecurities and compulsions, the Chicago Q&A presents itself as a kind of alter ego to the comparatively staid Manual of Style. In The Subversive Copy Editor, Saller continues her mission with audacity and good humor.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Year of Love Each day of this year I am challenging myself, and anyone else who will join, to love like you’ve never been hurt. Love unconditionally. Love completely. Love forgivingly. What if when Jesus said to love your neighbor as yourself, He really meant it? Think about your neighbors, your co-workers, your in-laws and even your outlaws..... Do you love them as yourself? I would like to start with the two greatest commandments: Matt. 22:34, “Hearing that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees, the Pharisees got together. 35 One of them, an expert in the law, tested him with this question: 36 “Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?” 37 Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’38 This is the first and greatest commandment. 39 And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ 40 All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.” In Reality, Jesus said this: Love God & Love People Let us hold these two truths in our hearts this year and Love God with all of our heart, soul, and minds and Love others as much as we love ourselves....

Book The Helper s Apprentice

Download or read book The Helper s Apprentice written by C E Pickhardt and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2006-07 with total page 522 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Too bad Professor Skye wasn't around to help. Professor Skye. Did he mean what he had said? That I would be his apprentice? Probably not. But I wished he had. I never even got to thank him for helping find my money. Of course, I told my mom and sister about Professor Skye, but they thought this was more of my pretending. More of my stories. Just because I liked to make things up, Mom sometimes found it hard believing me. Oh, I'd tell the truth all right, but then I'd add some make-believe to make the truth even better. If I took extra long before getting something done, it was because the clocks got tired and slowed down to take a rest. "Tell me another story that's a little closer to the truth," my Mom would say. "One that I won't have such a hard time believing." So I'd take out some of the make-believe, even though the story was never near as good. But not this time. Professor Skye had been real!

Book Other Loves All Flee

Download or read book Other Loves All Flee written by Leona Koehn Nichols and published by Author House. This book was released on 2014-12-15 with total page 173 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Leona Koehn Nichols was born into a loving Holdeman Mennonite family and grew up within the Mennonite community, being very much a part of this ultraconservative culture. Her parents were devout and committed to their church but were also balanced in their views of what it meant to follow Jesus. Raised in a family of five, with an older and younger brother, Leona enjoyed a happy childhood in rural California. Her father was a respected leader in the church and also in the community. Her mother enjoyed life and had visitors in the home frequently. She loved reading and read often to her children, both Bible story books and children's classics. Having been baptized into the church at age ten, Leona fully expected to spend her life as a faithful member of the Church of God in Christ (Mennonite). She married a minister's son, and they began a family. However, as their six children got older and decisions regarding what they would or would not be allowed to do began to immerge, so did the questions. Desiring to have biblical reasons behind their beliefs and decisions caused them to search the scriptures, looking for answers. This was met with concern. Being part of a church culture that emphasized unity in all things, including clothing and grooming styles; it was expected that their family would conform without question. When Leona and her husband met Jesus in a very loving and unexpected way in their own living room, it was soon obvious they would need to make a choice. Who would take first place in their hearts? Jesus, the Savior of their souls, or the church of their fathers? After months of trying to find a solution to conflicting views, their church fellowship was severed through the ordinance of excommunication. Now they would learn to trust in Jesus alone as the foundation they could build their lives on. Follow their story as they moved from legalism to grace.

Book excerpt: We live in a vast social wordscape made up almost entirely of chit-chat, or we're being talked at rather than with. Often, we feel targeted by others' words rather than invited into a mutual conversation. It can be hard to find a relationship that involves solid words on which to rest our tattered souls. In your hands, you hold a book with pages dusted by the Word, Jesus Christ. It assumes that since Jesus is still alive and still hears and speaks, there really is hope that humans can do the same. In fact, we're designed to do the same, we've just lost the skill. This object you have found, this book, invites you to engage in spiritual conversations, those that the Spirit of Christ, our helper, has always hoped we could have with each other. In spiritual conversations, chit-chat and targeting give way to real talk in which to rest, heal, repent, and grow.

Book Can I Love

Download or read book Can I Love written by Oh Boon Keng and published by Pagesetters Services Pte Ltd. This book was released on with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Can I love?” I often find myself asking this question. This seemingly simple question isn’t as straightforward for me because of my disability. Having muscular dystrophy means that it has become progressively impossible for me to do many of the things I could previously do. Knowing that I would eventually lose most of my physical abilities and independence, I didn’t know if I should even embark on a journey to find romantic love. While I am perfectly able to love someone emotionally, what physical intimacy and long-term commitment can I offer? Is it just enough to love someone with all my heart, and only my heart, without the physical and practical aspects of a relationship? Will I become a burden to my partner instead? Being a hopeless romantic, my desire for romantic love compelled me to start on this journey. I had many crushes and met many failures that hurt me deeply. Eventually, my perseverance paid off and I entered a relationship. Short-lived it may be, it was one of the best experiences in my life – never have I felt so empowered before. Through this book, I want to share my journey to find love. May it open your heart and mind to the matter of love for persons with disabilities.

Book The Theology of Dietrich Bonhoeffer

Download or read book The Theology of Dietrich Bonhoeffer written by John D. Godsey and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2015-12-22 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Godsey's seminal study is the first dissertation to be written on Dietrich Bonhoeffer's theology. It first appeared in 1960 when Bonhoeffer's name was relatively new in English-language circles. This work, which surveyed the entire Bonhoeffer corpus available at the time, quickly became a standard text that laid the groundwork for Bonhoeffer studies thereafter. Godsey explores Bonhoeffer's life and the key themes of his Christocentric theology, providing an introduction to mid-century Protestant theology, and showing how Bonhoeffer's theology can serve as a resource for those who seek to engage theology with the world. In the intervening years since its publication, Bonhoeffer scholarship has progressed, but much of what we think about Bonhoeffer's theology can be found in the pages of this work. Bonhoeffer's life and work bear witness to the fact that the church cannot live on "cheap grace," but only on the present Christ.
