Book excerpt: Indigenous Australian cultures were long known to the world mainly from the writing of anthropologists, ethnographers, historians, missionaries, and others. Indigenous Australians themselves have worked across a range of genres to challenge and reconfigure this textual legacy, so that they are now strongly represented through their own life-narratives of identity, history, politics, and culture. Even as Indigenous-authored texts have opened up new horizons of engagement with Aboriginal knowledge and representation, however, the textual politics of some of these narratives – particularly when cross-culturally produced or edited – can remain haunted by colonially grounded assumptions about orality and literacy. Through an examination of key moments in the theorizing of orality and literacy and key texts in cross-culturally produced Indigenous life-writing, Entangled Subjects explores how some of these works can sustain, rather than trouble, the frontier zone established by modernity in relation to ‘talk’ and ‘text’. Yet contemporary Indigenous vernaculars offer radical new approaches to how we might move beyond the orality–literacy ‘frontier’, and how modernity and the a-modern are Productively entangled in the process.

Book Women who do and women who don t join the women s movement

Download or read book Women who do and women who don t join the women s movement written by Robyn Rowland and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-02-29 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1984, Women who do and women who don’t join the women’s movement asks a variety of women – some of whom chose to align themselves with the women’s movement, others who chose not to – to write about their lives and the reasons for choices they have made. Where do the differences lie in the experience of feminists and antifeminists? Can clear dividing lines be drawn which place two groups of strong, intelligent women on opposing sides in the battle to survive in a ‘man’s world’? In tackling these questions, the contributors create a diverse pattern of women’s interpretations of ‘being female’, with, surprisingly, similarities emerging between the two groups, particularly in terms of their experience of ‘self’. This book will be of interest to students of women’s studies, gender studies and sociology.

Download or read book The Cambridge Companion to Australian Literature written by Elizabeth Webby and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2000-08-21 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book introduces in a lively and succinct way the major writers, literary movements, styles and genres that, at the beginning of a new century, are seen as constituting the field of 'Australian literature'. The book consciously takes a perspective that sees literary works not as aesthetic objects created in isolation by unique individuals, but as cultural products influenced and constrained by the social, political and economic circumstances of their times, as well as by geographical and environmental factors. It covers indigenous texts, colonial writing and reading, poetry, fiction and theatre throughout two centuries, biography and autobiography, and literary criticism in Australia. Other features of the companion are a chronology listing significant historical and literary events, and suggestions for further reading.
