Book St Symeon the New Theologian and Orthodox Tradition

Download or read book St Symeon the New Theologian and Orthodox Tradition written by Hilarion Alfeyev and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2000-06-08 with total page 387 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a study of the mystical nature of tradition, and the traditional nature of mysticism, and of St Symeon as both a highly personal and very traditional ecclesiastical writer. The teachings of St Symeon (late tenth to early eleventh century) created much controversy in Byzantium and even led to a short-lived exile to Asia Minor. For the first time in modern scholarship St Symeon's attitude to Scripture and to church worship, his relations with his spiritual father, Symeon the Studite, and the Studite tradition in general are examined. Separate chapters are dedicated to Symeon's cycle of daily reading, to his attitude to hagiographical literature, to his trinitarian theology, ecclesiology, anthropology, and mysticism. Special attention is also paid to the links between Symeon and preceeding authors such as Gregory Nazianzen. In this book Dr Alfeyev aims to redress the balance existing in the modern scholarly approach to Symeon and, more generally, to the Byzantine mystical tradition. By examining Symeon from within the tradition to which both he and the author belong Dr Alfeyev breaks new ground in original research.

Book excerpt: Discover this classic work from one of the Church's most beloved doctors, St. Bernard of Clairvaux. A work of spirituality rather than systematic theology, Bernard probes the depths of God's love with a distinctly human touch, Bernard brings readers into a new intimacy of with God.Along the way, Bernard, of course, offers a profound theological statement about the divine-human relationship but his primary aim is to usher his readers into deeper communion with God. Most profoundly and yet simply, Bernard shows us that we ought to love God for no other reason than that he is a gracious and benevolent God and we need but merely wake up to the freedom that God has given us to love him. When you purchase books from re: SOURCE Digital Publications you are purchasing a premium digital product. His deeply insightful words, penned centuries ago, ring just as inspiring and true today as they did the day they were written.

Book excerpt: In this 11th century text, St Bernard of Clairvaux, Doctor of the Church, gives the reader his insights and advice on Love, describing the four separate kinds of love that seekers experience on their path to Loving God: self-love, selfish love, loving God objectified, and loving one's self in God. This desire for Deity, the Saint asserts, is both a duty, because "He loved us first...miserable sinners, with a love so great and free," and a delight, as God bestows upon those who attain to the fourth stage of Love the blessed state of the Heavenly Fatherland, free from pain, sorrow and despair. St. Bernard's poetic medieval prose is surprisingly accessible, full of intriguing imagery, flashes of humor, and deep wisdom.

Book excerpt: You wish me to explain for what reason and in what measure we should love God. I should say that God Himself is the motive of our love to Him, and that the measure of due love is to be without measure. Is this clear enough? Perhaps it may be for a person of intelligence, but I desire to answer for both the learned and unlearned; and, though I may have said enough for the former, I must remember others also. For them I will unfold my meaning, and perhaps add somewhat to it. Aeterna Press
