Book The Love That Matters

Download or read book The Love That Matters written by Charles H. Featherstone and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2015-01-01 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A blond-haired, blue-eyed Lutheran man is approached on the streets of Chicago by members of the Latin Kings so he may teach them how to pray, and he does so with grace--this man's story, one suspects, isn't going to be a typical one. Life has not been easy for Charles Featherstone. From being bullied by peers and teachers in school, to his refusing to become a bully himself by leaving the armed services, to wandering the world in search of work and finding unexpected hospitality as an outsider nearly everywhere, to witnessing the 9/11 attacks from his nearby office, Featherstone's story is a tale of survival akin to Jacob's wrestling the angel at the River Jabbok. It may well leave the reader limping a bit, too, for the encounter with God found in these pages is stark and startling. Truly God's love knows no bounds and cannot be captured by labels--but as Featherstone's life attests, that love just might capture you.

Book excerpt: In just two decades, Dubai has reinvented itself from a small, poor and quiet fishing village to a dazzling city with a vibrant urban life. How did this happen? Home to more than 200 nationalities particularly those from the Indian subcontinent the emirate's choice to welcome expatriates has paid off. Cultivating an open and welcoming culture, Dubai manages to attract people from all over the world, heartily embracing any entrepreneurial contribution they wish to make. The emirate is now also known for its cosmopolitan melting-pot culture, and its enabling environment to conduct business, and this, along with the tax-free system and hassle-free infrastructure, makes it a much sought- after site for multinational enterprises who want a base in Asia. Unlike the Gulf emirates that can count on petroleum wealth, Dubai has wound its way to prosperity by planning carefully and executing those plans methodically. Its airline and luxury construction have made it a popular destination for luxury tourism. Projects like the Burj al-Arab, the Palm Jumeriah and the Burj Khalifa, along with events like the world's richest horserace the Dubai World Cup and the Dubai Shopping Festival, have sustained tourist interest and focused the world's attention on the emirate.

Book Impossible Citizens

Download or read book Impossible Citizens written by Neha Vora and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2013-03-18 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Indian communities have existed in the Gulf emirate of Dubai for more than a century. Since the 1970s, workers from South Asia have flooded into the emirate, enabling Dubai's huge construction boom. They now compose its largest noncitizen population. Though many migrant families are middle-class and second-, third-, or even fourth-generation residents, Indians cannot become legal citizens of the United Arab Emirates. Instead, they are all classified as temporary guest workers. In Impossible Citizens, Neha Vora draws on her ethnographic research in Dubai's Indian-dominated downtown to explore how Indians live suspended in a state of permanent temporariness. While their legal status defines them as perpetual outsiders, Indians are integral to the Emirati nation-state and its economy. At the same time, Indians—even those who have established thriving diasporic neighborhoods in the emirate—disavow any interest in formally belonging to Dubai and instead consider India their home. Vora shows how these multiple and conflicting logics of citizenship and belonging contribute to new understandings of contemporary citizenship, migration, and national identity, ones that differ from liberal democratic models and that highlight how Indians, rather than Emiratis, are the quintessential—yet impossible—citizens of Dubai.

Book Market Orientalism

Download or read book Market Orientalism written by Benjamin Smith and published by Syracuse University Press. This book was released on 2015-07-28 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although the Arab states of the Persian Gulf are leaders in many of the measures of absolute wealth that have traditionally defined success in the global economy, they have had a much harder time becoming accepted in the equally fractured and hierarchal realm of the cultural economy, where practices, signs, and perceptions of propriety matter. Market Orientalism examines how emerging markets are imagined as cultural economic spaces—spaces that are assembled, ranked, desired, and sometimes punished in ways built on earlier forms of dealing with “backward” economies and peoples. Such imaginations not only impact investment and guide policy, but also create stories of economic value that separate “us” from “them.” While market Orientalism functions anywhere that questions of “deserved” wealth come down to cultural/economic differences between places, Smith focuses on the Arab states of the Gulf. By combining field research with extensive analysis of news archives concerning the cultural economies of the Gulf states, Market Orientalism addresses important motivations for economic relations and provides a framework to analyze how prejudice, fashion, taste, and waste are vital to both narrow and widespread forms of economic activity.

Book Dying in Dubai

Download or read book Dying in Dubai written by Roselee Blooston and published by . This book was released on 2017-05 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: DYING IN DUBAI is a memoir of love, loss, reckoning, and renewal, set against the backdrop of a Rodeo Drive-on-Mars desert city. It tells of the sudden death of Roselee Blooston's beloved husband, Jerry, and how her fifteen day journey through a profoundly disorienting environment, and the inner journey over the next thirteen months through the equally foreign terrain of grief, force her to face wrenching questions about his behavior there. As she free-falls through the city's frightening underbelly with its ubiquitous police stations, gender-segregated waiting rooms, arbitrary Sharia laws, and an opaque bureaucracy that prevents her from immediately bringing his body home, the Middle East becomes the catalyst for a life-altering confrontation with her partner, her marriage, and ultimately, with herself. DYING IN DUBAI shows the reader that no matter the uncertainties, it is possible to transcend heartbreak, and to move forward with joy.

Book Contemporary World Narrative Fiction and the Spaces of Neoliberalism

Download or read book Contemporary World Narrative Fiction and the Spaces of Neoliberalism written by Michael K. Walonen and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-04-26 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a transnational study of how contemporary fiction writers from the United States and Canada to Nigeria to India to Dubai have conceptualized the emergent social spaces of the diverse corners of the neoliberal world system. Over the span of the past three to four decades, free market economic policies have been sold to or pushed upon every society on the globe in some way, shape, or form. The upshot of this has been a world system structured in terms of a vast shift of power and resources from government to private enterprise, dwindling civic life replaced by rising consumerism, an emerging oligarchic rentier class, large segments of population faced with meager material conditions of existence and few prospects of socio-economic mobility, and a looming sense of a near future dominated by further economic collapses and mounting social strife. This book analyses a wide cultural array of some of the most poignant narrative engagements with neoliberalism in its various localized manifestations throughout the world.
