Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A number of prominent moral philosophers and political theorists have recently called for a recovery of love. But what do we mean when we speak of love today? Love's Enlightenment examines four key conceptions of other-directedness that transformed the meaning of love and helped to shape the way we understand love today: Hume's theory of humanity, Rousseau's theory of pity, Smith's theory of sympathy, and Kant's theory of love. It argues that these four Enlightenment theories are united by a shared effort to develop a moral psychology that can provide both justificatory and motivational grounds for concern for others in the absence of recourse to theological or transcendental categories. In this sense, each theory represents an effort to redefine the love of others that used to be known as caritas or agape - a redefinition that came with benefits and costs that have yet to be fully appreciated.

Book Love s Subtle Magic

  • Author : Aditya Behl
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The encounter between Muslim and Hindu remains one of the defining issues of South Asian society today. It began as early as the 8th century, and the first Muslim kingdom in India, the Sultanate of Delhi, was established at the end of the 12th century. This power eventually reduced to vassalage almost every independent kingdom on the subcontinent. In Love's Subtle Magic, a remarkable and highly original book, Aditya Behl uses a little-understood genre of Sufi literature to paint an entirely new picture of the evolution of Indian culture during the earliest period of Muslim domination. These curious romantic tales transmit a profound religious message through the medium of adventurous stories of love. Although composed in the Muslim courts, they are written in a vernacular Indian language and involve Hindu yogis, Hindu princes and princesses, and Hindu gods. Until now, they have defied analysis. Behl shows that the Sufi authors of these charming tales sought to convey an Islamic vision via an Indian idiom. They thus constitute the earliest attempt at the indigenization of Islamic literature in an Indian setting. More important, however, Behl's analysis brilliantly illuminates the cosmopolitan and composite culture of the Sultanate India in which they were composed. This in turn compels us completely to rethink the standard of the opposition between Indian Hindu and foreign Muslim and recognize that the Indo-Islamic culture of this era was already significantly Indian in many important ways.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thirty years of collecting and 15 years of research have resulted in this discography that features all known recordings, transcriptions, and films made by Cole until 1950, when his jazz style faded away, and a selection of his later jazz-related trio sides. It includes for the first time Cole's unknown 16 transcriptions of his Wild Root broadcasts. This volume documents the development of a gifted pianist into a ballad-singing star and leader of the most famous jazz trio of the 1940s. All routes and recording activities by Cole and his fellow musicians from 1936 to the 1950s are chronicled here. Nat King Cole is widely known as a singer of unforgettable fame, but that he was a true King of Jazz Piano in its heyday and the inventor of today's piano trios is almost forgotten. This discography gives all details of the King Cole Trio's activities, listing recording sessions, available broadcasts on discs, film soundtracks, and guest appearances by the trio or by Cole alone, on such shows as Jubilee, Command Performance, Supper Club, Mail Call, and Kraft Music Hall. A special listing is included of those occasions when Cole participated as unknown or unnamed pianist on radio transcriptions for singers like Anita Boyer, Anita O'Day, The Dreamers, The Barrie Sisters, Bonnie Lake, Rose Murphy, Maxine Johnson, and Juanelda Carter. In addition, the book includes the Cole Trio's engagement routes with exact dates if known, names of promoters, and much more. The biographical portion is a fascinating period piece of Jazz-age memorabilia.

Book Jacques Lacan and the Freudian Practice of Psychoanalysis

Download or read book Jacques Lacan and the Freudian Practice of Psychoanalysis written by Dany Nobus and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-01-11 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jacques Lacan and the Freudian Practice of Psychoanalysis paints a completely new picture of the man and his ideas. The book suceeds in showing how ideas can become more accessible, and re-evaluates his significance within the field of psychodynamic psychotherapy. The book is structured thematically around five key issues: diagnosis, the analyst's position during the treatment, the management of transference, the formulation of interpretations, and the organisation of analytic training. For each of these issues, Lacan's entire work both published and unpublished material, has been taken into account and theoretical principles have been illustrated with clinical examples. The book also contains the first complete bibliography of Lacan's works in English. Clear, detailed, and wide ranging, Jacques Lacan and the Freudian Practice of Psychoanalysis will prove essential reading, not only for professionals and students within the fields of psychology and psychiatry, but for all those keen to discover a new Lacan.

Book Modernizing Composition

  • Author : Garrett Field
  • Publisher : Univ of California Press
  • Release : 2017-03-22

  • Pages : 230 pages

Download or read book Modernizing Composition written by Garrett Field and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2017-03-22 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A free ebook version of this title is available through Luminos, University of California Press’s Open Access publishing program. Visit www.luminosoa.org to learn more. The study of South Asian music falls under the purview of ethnomusicology, whereas that of South Asian literature falls under South Asian studies. As a consequence of this academic separation, scholars rarely take notice of connections between South Asian song and poetry. Modernizing Composition overcomes this disciplinary fragmentation by examining the history of Sinhala-language song and poetry in twentieth-century Sri Lanka. Garrett Field describes how songwriters and poets modernized song and poetry in response to colonial and postcolonial formations. The story of this modernization is significant in that it shifts focus from India’s relationship to the West to little-studied connections between Sri Lanka and North India.

Book excerpt: In Fever, music critic Tim Riley argues that while political and athletic role models have let us down, rock and roll has provided enduring role models for men and women. From Elvis Presley to Tina Turner to Bruce Springsteen to Kurt Cobain and Courtney Love, Riley makes a persuasive case that rock and roll, far from the corrosive force that conservative critics make it out to be, has instead been a positive influence in people's lives, laying out gender-defying role models far more enduringly than movies, TV, or "real life."

Book Modern and Contemporary Yorkshire Poetry

Download or read book Modern and Contemporary Yorkshire Poetry written by Kyra Piperides and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-07-31 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Delving into the landscapes and politics of twentieth- and twenty-first-century South, East, and West Yorkshire, Modern and Contemporary Yorkshire Poetry: Cultural Identities, Political Crises theorises Yorkshire as a distinct region of poetry in its own right. In outlining the commonalities and parameters of this branch of poetry, Modern and Contemporary Yorkshire Poetry engages the work with a selection of poets writing in and about the region since 1945, including Philip Larkin, Ted Hughes, Simon Armitage, Helen Mort, Zaffar Kunial, Kate Fox, and Vicky Foster. Charting the developments in Yorkshire poetry, this book explores several key contexts – including deindustrialisation, the Miners’ Strikes, and Brexit – in detail, evidencing the impacts of these sociopolitical events on the poetry of a region. Modern and Contemporary Yorkshire Poetry investigates 75 years of poetry to ask the question: what is Yorkshire poetry? In other words, what is it that connects poems by these writers, whilst setting them apart from poetry of other UK regions?
