So many of our state's greatest and lesser known athletes and coaches have used their fame, successes, and faith to make sure those less fortunate get the help they need. Whether it's Warrick Dunn and hie famous "Homes for the Holidays" program or Sid Edwards and his work with autism, these athletes and coaches are perfect examples of using success for good. • ISBN : 9781935754251
  • Pages : 0 pages

Download or read book Game Changers written by Marty Mulé and published by University of Louisiana. This book was released on 2013 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Louisiana almost defies logic when it comes to sports. Its native sons, daughters, and teams have left stamps on sports all out of proportion for what could be expected of a relatively small southern state. As Marty Mule, a legend among the state's sportswriters, shows, Louisiana's athletic punch far exceeds its weight class. Game Changers documents the enthralling history of Louisiana's athletes and more. There's the memorable match races between Lexington and Lecompe and Black Gold's Run for the Roses. There's Heisman Trophy-winner Billy Cannon on his famed punt return; Steve Van Buren rushing for the unheard of total of a thousand yards twice for the Philadelphia Eagles; Tom Dempsey's jaw-dropping field goal; and the Saints finally marching into the Super Bowl winners' club. There's the longest winning streak 218 in a row for any sport or team outside of the Harlem Globetrotters, set by the Baskin High School girls basketball team. And then there are the games themselves historic events, such as the Sullivan-Corbett fight, which changed boxing forever; Super Bowl IV, which altered the course of professional football; or the NCAA Final Four tournament where Michael Jordan got his first flush of national accolades. Maybe the motto on the license plate should read "Sports Fans Paradise." For those who follow teams and athletes from the Pelican State, Louisiana is a boot-shaped Valhalla.

Book The Saints The Superdome and the Scandal

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Filled with insider stories about the sports scene of New Orleans and previously untold secret political maneuvers made to bring the Saints to New Orleans." -New Orleans Times-Picayune "Dave Dixon offers a behind-the-scenes look at the New Orleans NFL." -(LA) The Daily Advertiser Before the Saints were synonymous with New Orleans, Dave Dixon was gathering support to create a team and build a Superdome to accommodate them. The man affectionately known as the "Father of the Saints" gives an insider's perspective on the historical events that shaped the New Orleans sports scene. Little-known facts reveal the negotiations, the payoffs, and the votes that eventually led to the announcement of the sixteenth franchise of the National Football League on November 1, 1966. Nine years after the NFL announcement, the Louisiana Superdome opened on August 3, 1975, as a fifty-two-acre, 269,000-square-foot facility that forever changed the skyline of New Orleans. The opening of this facility not only served as the home of the Saints, but later became home to evacuees of Hurricane Katrina. As Dixon reflects on the efforts of the key individuals who worked collectively to make this happen, he shares insight on a national scandal that he credits with altering our political landscape following the 1968 presidential elections and eventually leading to the fall of John McKeithen, a dear friend and supporter of the Saints. ABOUT THE AUTHOR Dave Dixon, named one of the "Ten Most Important New Orleanians of the 20th Century" by New Orleans Magazine was widely known for his time as the executive director of the Louisiana Superdome. He was the founder of the United States Football League (USFL) in 1983 and cofounder of World Championship Tennis. He served as a member of Loyola University's Board of Trustees and spoke to both Harvard University and Stanford University graduate schools of business. Dixon passed away in August of 2010.

Book Louisiana Film History

Download or read book Louisiana Film History written by Edwin E. Poole and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This excellent reference book is the first complete history and development of the vibrant film industry in Louisiana, dubbed Hollywood on the Bayou. Told through dozens of movie posters and stills and many fascionating details, it takes readers from the birth of the cinema in 1896, its early struggles, and on to the current plethora of film companies working in the state. Ed and Susan Poole, 30-year film accessory collectors and researchers in Gretna, LA, take us behind the scenes to explain Louisiana film lore and allure in characters such as Morgus the Magnificent, Evangeline, and the Vampire Lestat. They look at the state's diverse ethnic heritage and natural venues that inspire film makers, not to mention genres and topics only Louisiana can conjure: voodoo, Mardi Gras, cities of the dead, and Creole and Cajun cultures and dialects. Louisiana now ranks third in the country in film production, bested only by California and New York. This is the only complete reference book on how that came to be. It lists thousands of films shot totally or partially in Louisiana in well over a hundred years and gives a history of the more prominent ones. The 8.5 x 11 inch perfect bound book is richly illustrated by dozens of movie posters and stills from the Pooles' personal collection, reminders of the major national and international influence of Louisiana in cinema.
