Book excerpt: From the militia of colonial days to the National Guard of modern times, Americas citizen soldiers have symbolized the preparedness, the unselfish service, and the devotion to duty that have sustained the nation in war and peace. In times of grave national crisis, including wars, civil disorders, and natural disasters, these often unheralded patriots have served willingly, faithfully, and well. And, having contributed their special abilities to the task at hand, they returned to their citizen roles to await the next summons to duty. Here, for the first time, is the complete, detailed, documented history of the Louisiana National Guard, a facet of the states rich and colorful history that has never before been treated in depth. Author Evans J. Casso has woven an intricate tapestry of this continuing chronicle, drawing heavily upon extensive research from official state papers, archives, journals, narrative reports, and numerous personal interviews. With a disciplined historians eye, he traces the evolution of the Guard, from its forerunners of the frontier days to the highly trained, well-equipped organization of modern times. This work places in perspective the growth of the National Guard and the vital role it has played in the development of the Louisiana Territory, and later of both the state and the nation.

Book excerpt: From the hill country in the north to the marshy lowlands in the south, Louisiana and its citizens have long enjoyed the hard-earned fruits of the oil and gas industry’s labor. Economic prosperity flowed from pioneering exploration as the industry heralded engineering achievements and innovative production technologies. Those successes, however, often came at the expense of other natural resources, leading to contamination and degradation of land and water. In A Thousand Ways Denied, John T. Arnold documents the oil industry’s sharp interface with Louisiana’s environment. Drawing on government, corporate, and personal files, many previously untapped, he traces the history of oil-field practices and their ecological impacts in tandem with battles over regulation. Arnold reveals that in the early twentieth century, Louisiana helped lead the nation in conservation policy, instituting some of the first programs to sustain its vast wealth of natural resources. But with the proliferation of oil output, government agencies splintered between those promoting production and others committed to preventing pollution. As oil’s economic and political strength grew, regulations commonly went unobserved and unenforced. Over the decades, oil, saltwater, and chemicals flowed across the ground, through natural drainages, and down waterways. Fish and wildlife fled their habitats, and drinking-water supplies were ruined. In the wetlands, drilling facilities sat like factories in the midst of a maze of interconnected canals dredged to support exploration, manufacture, and transportation of oil and gas. In later years, debates raged over the contribution of these activities to coastal land loss. Oil is an inseparable part of Louisiana’s culture and politics, Arnold asserts, but the state’s original vision for safeguarding its natural resources has become compromised. He urges a return to those foundational conservation principles. Otherwise, Louisiana risks the loss of viable uses of its land and, in some places, its very way of life.

Book Creole

    Book Details:
  • Author : Sybil Kein
  • Publisher : LSU Press
  • Release : 2000-08-01

  • Pages : 890 pages

Download or read book Creole written by Sybil Kein and published by LSU Press. This book was released on 2000-08-01 with total page 890 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The word Creole evokes a richness rivaled only by the term's widespread misunderstanding. Now both aspects of this unique people and culture are given thorough, illuminating scrutiny in Creole, a comprehensive, multidisciplinary history of Louisiana's Creole population. Written by scholars, many of Creole descent, the volume wrangles with the stuff of legend and conjecture while fostering an appreciation for the Creole contribution to the American mosaic. The collection opens with a historically relevant perspective found in Alice Moore Dunbar-Nelson's 1916 piece "People of Color of Louisiana" and continues with contemporary writings: Joan M. Martin on the history of quadroon balls; Michel Fabre and Creole expatriates in France; Barbara Rosendale Duggal with a debiased view of Marie Laveau; Fehintola Mosadomi and the downtrodden roots of Creole grammar; Anthony G. Barthelemy on skin color and racism as an American legacy; Caroline Senter on Reconstruction poets of political vision; and much more. Violet Harrington Bryan, Lester Sullivan, Jennifer DeVere Brody, Sybil Kein, Mary Gehman, Arthi A. Anthony, and Mary L. Morton offer excellent commentary on topics that range from the lifestyles of free women of color in the nineteenth century to the Afro-Caribbean links to Creole cooking. By exploring the vibrant yet marginalized culture of the Creole people across time, Creole goes far in diminishing past and present stereotypes of this exuberant segment of our society. A study that necessarily embraces issues of gender, race and color, class, and nationalism, it speaks to the tensions of an increasingly ethnically mixed mainstream America.
