Book excerpt: "All these years, I've never given my heart to anyone... The truth is, I didn't have a heart to give. My heart was with a ghost." To the rest of the world, he was the little boy who went missing on the Fourth of July. But to Sydney Neville, he was everything. Her heart hasn't been the same since her best friend disappeared, but she's learned to build her life around that missing piece. Twenty-two years later, the last thing Sydney expects is for Oliver Lynch to return. Having been captive underground for decades, he's unfamiliar with the strange new world that awaits him—but he's alive. He's here. And no matter how he's changed, he and Sydney both still feel the connection that runs between them. But as their reborn friendship begins to feel like something more, Sydney and Oliver realize there are still jagged, painful truths creating space between them. The walls Sydney's built don't want to come down, and as Oliver hunts for his missing memories and lost time, he realizes his nightmare is not yet over. With nothing as it seems, is there space for love to bloom in this dark place? "I have such a soft spot for strong but innocent heroes, and Lotus has one of the best there is. If you are looking for a compelling story that touches on deep, emotional topics, a heroine who is easy to love, and a beautifully vulnerable male hero, pick this one up immediately." -Mia Sheridan, NYT bestselling author
Download or read book Everything written by Katie Bingham-Smith and published by Katie Bingham-Smith. This book was released on 2024-09-06 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alden loved me in high school, and we’ve had a hot and cold history ever since. I know we can have a second chance at love; I don’t care if he’s a single dad and we’re middle-aged. We were everything. As soon as I saw Alden in 9th grade, I was a goner. It was 1990, and he was the hot soccer player everyone wanted, and he picked me: plain Fern Green with mousy brown hair. All I wanted was to make Alden happy. He was, and still is, everything. I know he still feels it too. It’s obvious in the way he kisses me whenever we see each other, how he always checks in on me to see how I’m doing, how he tells me he wishes he could be a better man for me. We’re grown up now, and we’ve tried going our separate ways, but we always find each other again. No one knows me like Alden does, and he tells me there has never been another woman like me. So why aren’t we together? We’ve wasted enough time trying to forget each other, and I’m ready to walk away, I’m not the same needy girl I was in high school. But something is telling me to give it one last try. If Alden doesn’t see what I see between us, doesn’t want what I want, he’ll never hear from me again because I can’t do this anymore. But I’m going to give it everything I have to convince him that our second chance can end happily ever after.
Download or read book The King s Last Song written by Geoff Ryman and published by Small Beer Press. This book was released on 2008-09-01 with total page 451 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "[Ryman] has not so much created as revealed a world in which the promise of redemption takes seed even in horror."—The Boston Globe “Sweeping and beautiful. . . . The complex story tears the veil from a hidden world.”—The Sunday Times “Inordinately readable . . . extraordinary in its detail, color and brutality.”—The Independent "Ryman has crafted a solid historical novel with an authentic feel for both ancient and modern Cambodia." —Washington DC City Paper “Another masterpiece by one of the greatest fiction writers of our time.”—Kim Stanley Robinson "Ryman's knack for depicting characters; his ability to tell multiple, interrelated stories; and his knowledge of Cambodian history create a rich narrative that looks at Cambodia's "killing fields" both recent and ancient and Buddhist belief with its desire for transcendence. Recommended for all literary fiction collections." —Library Journal Archeologist Luc Andrade discovers an ancient Cambodian manuscript inscribed on gold leaves but is kidnapped—and the manuscript stolen—by a faction still loyal to the ideals of the brutal Pol Pot regime. Andrade’s friends, an ex-Khmer Rouge agent and a young motoboy, embark on a trek across Cambodia to rescue him. Meanwhile, Andrade, bargaining for his life, translates the lost manuscript for his captors. The result is a glimpse into the tremendous and heart-wrenching story of King Jayavarman VII: his childhood, rise to power, marriage, interest in Buddhism, and the initiation of Cambodia’s golden age. As Andrade and Jayavarman’s stories interweave, the question becomes whether the tale of ancient wisdom can bring hope to a nation still suffering from the violent legacy of the last century. Geoff Ryman is the author of the novels Air (winner of Arthur C Clarke and James Tiptree awards) and The Unconquered Country (a World Fantasy Award winner). Canadian by birth, he has lived in Cambodia and Brazil and now teaches creative writing at the University of Manchester in England.

Download or read book In the Convent of Little Flowers written by Indu Sundaresan and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2009-09-15 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Now in paperback, internationally bestselling author Indu Sundaresan presents a poignant collection of contemporary short stories about the challenges and consequences faced by women in Indian life today. Like Jhumpa Lahiri’s Interpreter of Maladies, Indu Sundaresan’s In the Convent of Little Flowers gives readers an eloquent and illuminating collection of stories about contemporary Indian life, exploring the cutting-edge issues that surround the clash between ancient tradition and modernity. In the collection’s title story, a young woman adopted by an American family in Seattle receives a letter from Sister Mary Theresa, a nun at the Convent of Little Flowers in Chennai, where she stayed as a child. Unbeknownst to the Indian woman, the nun is her biological mother’s sister. In another story, the grandmother of an Indian journalist begs her grandson to intervene and stop a young widow from being burned alive. And when a teenaged daughter bears a child out of wedlock, her entire family is thrown into turmoil. With their lush prose, vividly rendered settings, and complex characters, these and the other stories in this elegant collection bring readers into the experience of Indian women at home and abroad, where modernity offers them lives their grandmothers could never dream of, while at the same time taking away parts of their history. With a delicate touch, Indu Sundaresan weaves the pieces of the conflict together, presenting a nuanced and unforgettable tapestry.
Download or read book Poems of Francis Thompson written by Bridget Boardman and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2002-04-07 with total page 552 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the research for her biography of Francis Thompson, Between Heaven and Charing Cross it became clear to Brigid Boardman that a new edition of his poetry was essential for a full recognition of the range and variety of his work. He remains best known for his great poem The Hound of Heaven but his work as a whole has never been properly presented. All previous editions include the many alterations and deletions that were made to Thompson's work posthumously by Wilfrid Meynell for the edition of 1913. Meynell's aim was to present the poetry in a strictly orthodox Catholic light in a period when fears about Modernism influenced the Church's understanding of literature. These anxieties have not served the poetry well. Thompson's aim was 'to be the poet of the return to God' and his work expresses the divine presence that he believed permeated all aspects of life. This edition finally restores an important English poet to the readers that he so deserves.
