Book The Grand Surprise

Download or read book The Grand Surprise written by Leo Lerman and published by Knopf. This book was released on 2009-02-19 with total page 730 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A remarkable life and a remarkable voice emerge from the journals, letters, and memoirs of Leo Lerman: writer, critic, editor at Condé Nast, and man about town at the center of New York’s artistic and social circles from the 1940s until his death in 1994. Lerman’s contributions to the world of the arts were large and varied: he wrote on theater, dance, music, art, books, and movies for publications as diverse as Mademoiselle and The New York Times. He was features editor at Vogue and editor in chief of Vanity Fair. He launched careers and trends, exposing the American public to new talents, fashions, and ideas. He was a legendary party host as well, counting Marlene Dietrich, Maria Callas, and Truman Capote among his intimates, and celebrities like Cary Grant, Jackie Onassis, Isak Dinesen, and Margot Fonteyn as part of his larger circle. But his personal accounts and correspondence reveal him also as having an unusually rich and complex private life, mourning the cultivated émigré world of 1930s and 1940s New York City, reflecting on being Jewish and an openly homosexual man, and intimately evoking his two most important lifelong relationships. From a man whose literary icon was Marcel Proust comes an unparalleled social and emotional history. With eloquence, insight, and wit, he filled his journals and letters with acute assessments, gossip, and priceless anecdotes while inimitably recording both our larger cultural history and his own moving private story.

Book Philosophy Between the Lines

Download or read book Philosophy Between the Lines written by Arthur M. Melzer and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2014-09-09 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Shines a floodlight on a topic that has been cloaked in obscurity . . . a landmark work in both intellectual history and political theory” (The Wall Street Journal). Philosophical esotericism—the practice of communicating one’s unorthodox thoughts “between the lines”—was a common practice until the end of the eighteenth century. Despite its long and well-documented history, however, esotericism is often dismissed today as a rare occurrence. But by ignoring esotericism, we risk cutting ourselves off from a full understanding of Western philosophical thought. Walking readers through both an ancient (Plato) and a modern (Machiavelli) esoteric work, Arthur M. Melzer explains what esotericism is—and is not. It relies not on secret codes, but simply on a more intensive use of familiar rhetorical techniques like metaphor, irony, and insinuation. Melzer explores the various motives that led thinkers in different times and places to engage in this strange practice, while also exploring the motives that lead more recent thinkers not only to dislike and avoid this practice but to deny its very existence. In the book’s final section, “A Beginner’s Guide to Esoteric Reading,” Melzer turns to how we might once again cultivate the long-forgotten art of reading esoteric works. The first comprehensive, book-length study of the history and theoretical basis of philosophical esotericism, Philosophy Between the Lines is “a treasure-house of insight and learning. It is that rare thing: an eye-opening book . . . By making the world before Enlightenment appear as strange as it truly was, [Melzer] makes our world stranger than we think it is” (George Kateb, Professor of Politics, Emeritus, at Princeton University). “Brilliant, pellucid, and meticulously researched.” —City Journal

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Leo's Misadventures is about Leo McGregor, a twenty-year-old surfer dude from Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, who won a $156 million lottery. He decided to get out of town for a while to get away from the locals who badgered him for a handout. He hitchhiked across America to Santa Monica, California, via Route 66. After a thirty-nine-day journey across the country, Leo ended up at the Santa Monica Pier with a journal full of stories and a girlfriend named Abby Walker. When he left Kitty Hawk, he had no idea what he would do when he arrived at his destination. Would he turn around and head back east or stick around on the West Coast for a while? Leo and Abby rented a beach house on the Pacific Ocean near the famous pier to give them time to figure things out. On his journey, Leo had given a lot of thought about the best way to use the money he had won. After much thought and discussion with Abby, he decided to start a charitable foundation. He and Abby found a nice office space near the pier and leased it for one year. Leo needed an attorney and found one in Santa Monica named Jess who helped him set up the foundation. With his charitable foundation up and running, Leo needed someone to run the day-to-day operations. He found Freddy, who lived in Malibu with his adopted parents, to fill this critical position. Leo, Abby, Jess, and Freddy became good friends and enjoyed themselves on the coast when they weren't working. Eventually, Leo bought an apartment building on the beach and converted it into a surf shop. He hired Brody, a local surf builder, to run the shop and use locals to help create the boards. Any profits would be donated to charity. With everything running smoothly, Leo began to ponder the need for similar charities in other parts of the country--or internationally.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dear readers, This story is very personal to me. It starts with the tales of young Leo Bryant, which by the way is the name of my great-grandson, and includes many characters in his early years. Most of the facts in this story are related to my father, who was born on August 20, 1927, just as Leo was, whose father’s name was the name of my father and myself. Having read extensively on the subject of the United Mine Workers of America, of which I am a current member, having worked in the coal mines for fourteen years on various assignments, and being forced out by injuries, of which there are many in the coal mining industry, I believe I am qualified as a man who knows the facts of the mine wars. Many of the historical facts in this story are true, for example, the Blair Mountain Massacre in which quite a few miners were killed or injured by the coal company thugs, including Sheriff Don Chafin whose sole responsibility was to keep the union out of Logan County, West Virginia. I hope you read and enjoy this story as much as I enjoyed writing it. Thanks. Tom Leo Gilco Jr.

Book Leo Durocher

Download or read book Leo Durocher written by Paul Dickson and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2017-03-21 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Paul Dickson, the Casey Award–winning author of Bill Veeck: Baseball's Greatest Maverick, the first full biography of Leo Durocher, one of the most colorful and important figures in baseball history. Leo Durocher (1906–1991) was baseball's all-time leading cocky, flamboyant, and galvanizing character, casting a shadow across several eras, from the time of Babe Ruth to the Space Age Astrodome, from Prohibition through the Vietnam War. For more than forty years, he was at the forefront of the game, with a Zelig-like ability to be present as a player or manager for some of the greatest teams and defining baseball moments of the twentieth century. A rugged, combative shortstop and a three-time All-Star, he became a legendary manager, winning three pennants and a World Series in 1954. Durocher performed on three main stages: New York, Chicago, and Hollywood. He entered from the wings, strode to where the lights were brightest, and then took a poke at anyone who tried to upstage him. On occasion he would share the limelight, but only with Hollywood friends such as actor Danny Kaye, tough-guy and sometime roommate George Raft, Frank Sinatra, and his third wife, movie star Laraine Day. As he did with Bill Veeck, Dickson explores Durocher's life and times through primary source materials, interviews with those who knew him, and original newspaper files. A superb addition to baseball literature, Leo Durocher offers fascinating and fresh insights into the racial integration of baseball, Durocher's unprecedented suspension from the game, the two clubhouse revolts staged against him in Brooklyn and Chicago, and Durocher's vibrant life off the field.
