Book Grandmothers and Grandmothering Creative and Critical Contemplations in Honour of our Women Elders

Download or read book Grandmothers and Grandmothering Creative and Critical Contemplations in Honour of our Women Elders written by Kathy Mantas and published by Demeter Press. This book was released on 2021-10-13 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today, more and more grandmothers around the world are taking on varied responsibilities and many roles, sometimes concurrently. Consequently, grandmothers continue to play, as in the past, an influential role not only in the lives of their grandchildren, but also in our communities and in society more broadly. Grandmothers and Grandmothering: Creative and Critical Contemplations in Honour of our Women Elders, as the title suggests, seeks to pay homage to our grandmothers and their contributions to society. As well, it aims to explore the textured and complex phenomena of grandmothering from a range of disciplines and cultural perspectives. Our hope is that this collection challenges preconceived notions of what it means to be a grandmother and provides insight into the multifaceted nature of grandmothering.

Book A Fisherman s Guide to Selected Lakes of Northwest Montana

Download or read book A Fisherman s Guide to Selected Lakes of Northwest Montana written by John E. Moore and published by Dog Ear Publishing. This book was released on 2010-03 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a second volume, containing information on 100 additional lakes in Flathead, Lake, Lincoln, Missoula and Sanders counties of northwest Montana. They range from lowland lakes to alpine lakes. Many can be driven to, while many others require a hike. Most fishing guides offer very limited information on a large number of lakes, most of which their authors have never even been near. This book provides detailed information on the lake and surrounding area, as well as directions and fishing tips. All lakes included in this book have been personally visited, photographed, and in most cases fished by the author. The emphasis is on the fisherman's perspective, but trail and camping information is equally applicable to those who only wish to hike and camp. This volume covers many lakes in the Yaak area, as well as the Jewel Basin and additional waters in the Ten Lakes area near Eureka. Many lakes are found in the Lolo, Flathead, Kootenai and Kaniksu National Forests. Hikes into lakes in the Cabinet Mountains Wilderness and Mission Mountains Wilderness are also included. Photographic opportunities, for both scenery and wildlife, in the areas covered by this book are limitless. While researching this volume, bear (black and grizzly), cougar, wolves, mountain goats, moose, elk, countless deer, and even porcupine were encountered. The book is separated into chapters for each lake. A photograph of the lake is included at the beginning of each chapter. The author is a ten-time Washington State record holder, with certified weight records for five different species of fish. Catch data for several hundred lakes, dating back to 1981, has been provided to Washington State fish biologists. Data dating back to 1994 has also been provided to the State of Montana. Born and raised in northwest Washington and part of a very outdoor oriented family, the author has spent his entire life exploring new places and looking for new waters to fish. So far the search for fishing opportunities has ranged across the states of Washington, Idaho and Montana.

Book American Serengeti

    Book Details:
  • Author : Dan Flores
  • Publisher : University Press of Kansas
  • Release : 2017-01-16
  • ISBN : 070062466X
  • Pages : 224 pages

Download or read book American Serengeti written by Dan Flores and published by University Press of Kansas. This book was released on 2017-01-16 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: America's Great Plains once possessed one of the grandest wildlife spectacles of the world, equaled only by such places as the Serengeti, the Masai Mara, or the veld of South Africa. Pronghorn antelope, gray wolves, bison, coyotes, wild horses, and grizzly bears: less than two hundred years ago these creatures existed in such abundance that John James Audubon was moved to write, "it is impossible to describe or even conceive the vast multitudes of these animals." In a work that is at once a lyrical evocation of that lost splendor and a detailed natural history of these charismatic species of the historic Great Plains, veteran naturalist and outdoorsman Dan Flores draws a vivid portrait of each of these animals in their glory—and tells the harrowing story of what happened to them at the hands of market hunters and ranchers and ultimately a federal killing program in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The Great Plains with its wildlife intact dazzled Americans and Europeans alike, prompting numerous literary tributes. American Serengeti takes its place alongside these celebratory works, showing us the grazers and predators of the plains against the vast opalescent distances, the blue mountains shimmering on the horizon, the great rippling tracts of yellowed grasslands. Far from the empty "flyover country" of recent times, this landscape is alive with a complex ecology at least 20,000 years old—a continental patrimony whose wonders may not be entirely lost, as recent efforts hold out hope of partial restoration of these historic species. Written by an author who has done breakthrough work on the histories of several of these animals—including bison, wild horses, and coyotes—American Serengeti is as rigorous in its research as it is intimate in its sense of wonder—the most deeply informed, closely observed view we have of the Great Plains' wild heritage.
