Download or read book An Endangered Species written by David Gower and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2013-09-12 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a cricketer, David Gower was famed for the elegance of his strokeplay as one of England's greatest batsmen and for his superb fielding. As a captain, he led his country to Ashes success, yet some queried his application because it all seemed to come to him so easily and effortlessly. But that was never the whole story: Gower was always committed and a great competitor, as this fascinating and frank book, looking back on his life and career, shows. Once he retired from the game, Gower built a new career for himself, first as team captain in the long-running TV comedy series They Think It's All Over, and then as an astute and charming presenter and commentator with Sky Sports. After more than 30 years as one of the most popular figures in the game, Gower now reveals there is so much more to his story than the cliched image of 'Lord' Gower flying in his Tiger Moth. He is a man of great insight, determination and drive, but who also knows there is always more to be had from life.

Download or read book The Stolen Dream written by John Devaney and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2019-07-04 with total page 630 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book examines a period when football underwent a seismic and ineradicable change brought about by the determination of the Victorian Football League to wrest control of the game's development and destiny from the various state controlling bodies and the Australian Football Council. Whereas the VFL had initially been the first among equals, it gradually assumed the role of the sole and undisputed guardian of the code. The AFC, once football's ostensible national controlling body, became an irrelevance. Instead of a national sport with a national remit we ended up with an expanded VFL with a majority of Victorian member clubs supplemented by a token sprinkling of teams from interstate. Such teams were in most cases created from scratch and could in no way be said to derive directly from the states' unique and distinctive football traditions and culture. For some, it was a brave new world, but evolution does not inevitably entail improvement.

Book excerpt: Get to know England legend Alastair Cook in his fascinating and remarkably honest autobiography 'He is England's greatest ever batsman . . . a hugely enjoyable book' Daily Mail _________ Watch. The. Ball. It's just you. Standing at the crease. Waiting. The bowler is running. His arm swinging. The ball - 155 grams of cork, string and leather - is hurled at you. At 90 mph it travels 22 yards in under half a second. You can barely see it and you've got to be swinging your bat before it's halfway towards you. Because you are in its path . . . Alastair Cook, one of England's most decorated players and highest test run scorer, knows what it is like to be your best under pressure. Yet at 33 he called time on his England career. Come with him as he relives the fraught hours on the pitch, the desperate lows and astonishing highs, the paralysing anxiety that can send the best back home and the extraordinary battle of wills with yourself, the opposing players and even those supposedly on your own side. This is cricket as you've never seen it. The view from the inside . . . _________ 'Fascinating, timely. Delves into the psychological challenges of the game' Guardian 'Bracingly honest' Times
Download or read book We Who Proudly Served written by Peter Francis Kenny and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2015-05-27 with total page 1230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although Australia is only a young country in comparison to other nations, it can hold its head up high and proudly proclaim that it is one of the giants in this world of toil and trouble in which we live. When the odds are stacked against Australians, they dont turn and run; instead, they stand and fight and overcome the obstacles that face them. The contents of this volume are a tribute to all the men and women of this proud and great country, who have come from all walks of life to give of their time, and unfortunately, some have even given their lives, to defend this great land and keep it free. There have been politicians, doctors, nurses, police officers, average everyday citizens, musicians, actors, artists, farmers, graziers, authors, sportsmen and women, journalists, and a host of others who have taken up the cause for their country and the monarchy, serving from the Crimean to the war in Vietnam and beyond. Their heroic deeds and their many sacrifices have ensured that todays generation can rest easier, proud in the knowledge that these servicemen and women have paved the way for our freedom. Now they come together once again as one big family to shed an insight on their achievements so that you can fully understand and appreciate what they have and had experienced. I dedicate this work to the memory of all those who have made the supreme sacrifice in order that we may live in peace and prosperity and also to the families of those who did not return. The book is not a glorification of war but a glorification of the individual and his or her actions and deeds.
Download or read book Values in Cities written by James Lesh and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-09-23 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Examining urban heritage in twentieth-century Australia, James Lesh reveals how evolving ideas of value and significance shaped cities and places. Over decades, a growing number of sites and areas were found to be valuable by communities and professionals. Places perceived to have value were often conserved. Places perceived to lack value became subject to modernisation, redevelopment, and renewal. From the 1970s, alongside strengthened activism and legislation, with the innovative Burra Charter (1979), the values-based model emerged for managing the aesthetic, historic, scientific, and social significance of historic environments. Values thus transitioned from an implicit to an overt component of urban, architectural, and planning conservation. The field of conservation became a noted profession and discipline. Conservation also had a broader role in celebrating the Australian nation and in reconciling settler colonialism for the twentieth century. Integrating urban history and heritage studies, this book provides the first longitudinal study of the twentieth-century Australian heritage movement. It advocates for innovative and reflexive modes of heritage practice responsive to urban, social, and environmental imperatives. As the values-based model continues to shape conservation worldwide, this book is an essential reference for researchers, students, and practitioners concerned with the past and future of cities and heritage.
