Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study of the four installments comprising Luis Goytisolo’s Antagonía tetralogy—Recuento (1973), Los verdes de mayo hasta el mar (1976), La cólera de Aquiles (1979), and Teoría del conocimiento (1981)—examines the means by which these works of fiction, despite their structurally and linguistically complex discourse, seek to make themselves intelligible to the traditional reader. This reader-response approach to Antagonía demonstrates how the work, notwithstanding its efforts to elaborate an innovative prose that would supersede the tenets of (neo)realism that characterized Spanish fiction from the 1940s to the 1960s, reaches out to the traditional reader and ultimately affirms the power of language and literature as vehicles for understanding oneself and the world.

Download or read book Marian Devotions Political Mobilization and Nationalism in Europe and America written by Roberto Di Stefano and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-11-23 with total page 343 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume examines the changing role of Marian devotion in politics, public life, and popular culture in Western Europe and America during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The book brings together, for the first time, studies on Marian devotions across the Atlantic, tracing their role as a rallying point to fight secularization, adversarial ideologies, and rival religions. This transnational approach illuminates the deep transformations of devotional cultures across the world. Catholics adopted modern means and new types of religious expression to foster mass devotions that epitomized the catholic essence of the “nation.” In many ways, the development of Marian devotions across the world is also a response to the questioning of Pope Sovereignty. These devotional transformations followed an Ultramontane pattern inspired not only by Rome but also by other successful models approved by the Vatican such as Lourdes. Collectively, they shed new light on the process of globalization and centralization of Catholicism.

Download or read book The Spanish Republic and Civil War written by Julián Casanova and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2010-07-29 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Spanish Civil War has gone down in history for the horrific violence that it generated. The climate of euphoria and hope that greeted the overthrow of the Spanish monarchy was utterly transformed just five years later by a cruel and destructive civil war. Here Julián Casanova, one of Spain's leading historians, offers a magisterial new account of this critical period in Spanish history. He exposes the ways in which the Republic brought into the open simmering tensions between Catholics and hardline anticlericalists, bosses and workers, Church and State, order and revolution. In 1936 these conflicts tipped over into the sacas, paseos and mass killings which are still passionately debated today. The book also explores the decisive role of the international instability of the 1930s in the duration and outcome of the conflict. Franco's victory was in the end a victory for Hitler and Mussolini and for dictatorship over democracy.
