This learning strategy has developed the need to learn foreign languages and to communicate with people with different cultural backgrounds. Culture learning should be part of language and content teaching as Higher Education involves language skills, topic comprehension and sociological capabilities. Teachers explore new teaching strategies which imply diverse goals and focus on different cultural backgrounds. The contributions of this book comment the multicultural awareness of the students involved in learning another language and the facts implied in teaching in a multicultural environment.

Download or read book Luis Bu uel written by Jo Evans and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2019-10-31 with total page 641 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Luis Buñuel: A Life in Letters provides access for the first time to an annotated English-language version of around 750 of the most important and most widely relevant of these letters. Buñuel (1900-1983) came to international attention with his first films, Un Chien Andalou (with Dalí, 1929) and L'Âge d'Or (1930): two surprisingly avant-garde productions that established his position as the undisputed master of Surrealist filmmaking. He went on to make 30 full-length features in France, the US and Mexico, and consolidated his international reputation with a Palme d'Or for Viridiana in 1961, and an Academy Award in 1973 for The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie. He corresponded with some of the most famous writers, directors, actors and artists of his generation and the list of these correspondents reads like a roll call of major twentieth-century cultural icons: Fellini, Truffaut, Vigo, Aragon, Dalí, Unik - and yet none of this material has been accessible outside specialist archives and a very small number of publications in Spanish and French.

Book My Green Age

Download or read book My Green Age written by Keough Terrence Keough and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2009-12-21 with total page 423 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The middle years of the twentieth century were a time of profound and rapid change. The world had recently experienced the Great Depression and World War II. Nothing could be quite the same again-and, in fact, nothing was. In My Green Age, author Terrence Keough not only recounts his life as an ordinary person, but he also provides a perspective on the years between 1935 and 1963. A series of vignettes interspersed throughout the memoir add piquancy to the comments on the nature of the times. A summer memory: My birthday, June 14, 1940. I heard from my upstairs bedroom my mother talking to Mr. Olson on the doorstep below. "Paris has fallen to the Germans," he said. The Reverend R. MacDonald's Religion 5C class: "If you mow your lawn for up to a half hour on Sunday," he contended, "you have committed a venial sin. If you mow it for more than a half hour, that's a mortal sin." One evening, we took the tube to Knightsbridge to go to my favourite restaurant, Luba's Bistro, just down the street from Harrods and the Brompton Oratory, on Yeoman's Row.

Book Nature Enlightenment and University Reforms in the Iberian Peninsula A Comparative Analysis of the Universities of Salamanca and Coimbra 1766 1820

Download or read book Nature Enlightenment and University Reforms in the Iberian Peninsula A Comparative Analysis of the Universities of Salamanca and Coimbra 1766 1820 written by and published by Dykinson. This book was released on with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The university reforms that took place in Europe throughout the 18th century were an important moment of change in the history of these institutions. In the Iberian Peninsula, this wave of reforms left its mark in Coimbra and Salamanca (later reaching the other Spanish universities). Portugal and Spain were no strangers to the motivations and even to the general lines of this wave of reforms. Inseparable from the ideas of the Enlightenment, and with a clear will to combat the backwardness and decadence of these institutions, rather ambitious projects emerged, albeit in different degrees. Coimbra faced a rather disruptive initial situation while in Salamanca later plans (1807, for example) proved to be quite ambitious as well. All having a mandatory nature, it would not be correct to say that these Universities did not participate in these processes of reform. Individually or on behalf of collective bodies, several initiatives and proposals emerged during this period in both Universities. In addition, the participation of professors in the statutes and plans that were launched since 1771 is recurrent. Beyond this aspect, it will not be forced to state that the curricular aspect was the most significant mark of these reforms. Thus, we chose to study in a comparative way subjects that sought to explain the concept of nature and its products. With the clear objective of preparing a body of technicians capable of providing a rational and effective exploitation of the various natural products, the faculties of mathematics and philosophy emerged. In the case of medicine, natural products were essential to produce medicines and in this sense the reform of this knowledge brought, among other changes, matters linked to pharmaceutical studies. In the area of law, a relevant introduction was natural law. The perception of natural law was not similar in both countries, and an evident consequence was the greater instability of this chair in Salamanca. Inseparable from the curricular aspects was the adoption of foreign compendia and the encouragement given to the teachers to write their own textbooks. The adoption of textbooks was quite similar, and clearly shows us the lines that reformers sought to follow to modernize these university institutions.

Download or read book A Laboratory of Her Own written by Victoria L. Ketz and published by Vanderbilt University Press. This book was released on 2021-01-15 with total page 511 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Laboratory of Her Own gathers diverse voices to address women's interaction with STEM fields in the context of Spanish cultural production. This volume focuses on the many ways the arts and humanities provide avenues for deepening the conversation about how women have been involved in, excluded from, and represented within the scientific realm. While women's historic exclusion from STEM fields has been receiving increased scrutiny worldwide, women within the Spanish context have been perhaps even more peripheral given the complex sociocultural structures emanating from gender norms and political ideologies dominant in nineteenth- and twentieth-century Spain. Nonetheless, Spanish female cultural producers have long been engaged with science and technology, as expressed in literature, art, film, and other genres. Spanish arts and letters offer diverse representations of the relationships between women, gender, sexuality, race, and STEM fields. A Laboratory of Her Own studies representations of a diverse range of Spanish women and scientific cultural products from the late nineteenth through the twenty-first centuries. STEM topics include the environment, biodiversity, temporal and spatial theories, medicine and reproductive rights, neuroscience, robotics, artificial intelligence, and quantum physics. These scientific themes and other issues are analyzed in narratives, paintings, poetry, photographs, science fiction, medical literature, translation, newswriting, film, and other forms.
