Download or read book The Nirvana Express written by Mick Brown and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2023 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1897, an Indian yogi named Bava Lachman Dass exhibited himself at the Westminster Aquarium in London, demonstrating forty-eight yoga positions to a bemused audience. Four years earlier, Hindu philosopher Swami Vivekananda had spoken at the first World Parliament of Religions in Chicago, where theosophist Annie Besant rhapsodized about 'his inborn sense of worth' and the 'exquisite beauty' of his spiritual message. The Victorians had conflicted views on the religious beliefs and practices of the Indian sub-continent, blending fascination and suspicion. But within two generations, legions of young Westerners would be following the 'hippie trail' to India, and the Beatles would be meditating at the feet of the guru Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. Journalist Mick Brown's vivid account charts the eccentric history of the West's evolving love affair with Indian religion through a curious cast of scholars, seekers, charlatans and saints. From Edwin Arnold, whose epic poem about the life of the Buddha became a best-seller in Victorian Britain, to the occultist and magician Aleister Crowley; and from spiritual teachers Jiddu Krishnamurti, Meher Baba and Ramana Maharshi to the controversial guru Rajneesh, The Nirvana Express is an exhilarating, sometimes troubling journey through the West's search for enlightenment.
Download or read book Religion and Sustainability Interreligious Resources Interdisciplinary Responses written by Rita D. Sherma and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-05-09 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume brings sustainability studies into creative and constructive conversation with actions, practices, and worldviews from religion and theology supportive of the vision and work of the UN SDGs. It features more than 30 chapters from scholars across diverse disciplines, including economics, ethics, theology, sociology, ritual studies, and visual culture. This interdisciplinary content presents new insights for inhibiting ecospheric devastation, which is inextricably linked to unsustainable financial, societal, racial, geopolitical, and cultural relationships. The chapters show how humanistic elements can enable the establishment of sustainable ways of thinking, feeling, and acting. This includes the aesthetic and emotive dimensions of life. The contributors cover such topics as empowering women and girls to systemically reverse climate change; nurturing interreligious peace; decolonizing landscapes; and promoting horticulture, ecovillages, equity, and animal ethics. Coverage integrates a variety of religious and theological perspectives. These include Buddhism, Judaism, Hinduism, Islam, Christianity, and other traditions. To enable the restoration and flourishing of the ecosystems of the biosphere, human societies need to be reimagined and reordered in terms of economic, cultural, religious, racial, and social equitability. This volume illustrates transformative paradigms to help foster such change. It introduces new principles, practices, ethics, and insights to the discourse. This work will appeal to students, scholars, and professionals researching the ethical, moral, social, cultural, psychological, developmental, and other social scientific impacts of religion on the key markers of sustainability.
Download or read book While the World Slept written by Bhau Kalchuri and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2007-10 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bhau Kalchuri is an Indian author, poet, trust administrator, and one of Avatar Meher Baba's very close disciples. He is also the principle biographer of Meher Baba's life. Bhau, who holds master's degrees in public administration, law, and chemistry, met Meher Baba in 1952 and joined him permanently in 1953 at the age of 27. He served Baba in various capacities including as his night watchman. In 1973 Bhau became a trustee of the Avatar Meher Baba Perpetual Public Charitable Trust and is currently its chairman. Kalchuri is best known for his exhaustive biography of Meher Baba, Lord Meher, a twenty volume 6,472 page chronicle based on diaries kept by Baba's followers from as early as 1922, as well as recorded interviews. He is also author of Avatar Meher Baba Manifesting and The Nothing and the Everything and has written several plays and books of verse. Bhau writes in Hindi and English. In While the World Slept Bhau Kalchuri recounts stories from his years as Meher Baba's night watchman between 1953-1969. In this short book we get a small peek into a deeply private, often unfathomable side of the Avatar's internal work. Gripping, moving, sometimes outright disturbing, we find the master at work with both Universe and disciple, occurring in the middle of the night, as the world was sleeping.
