Book Lord Lugard s Nigeria

Download or read book Lord Lugard s Nigeria written by Yinka Kolawole and published by Strategic Book Publishing & Rights Agency. This book was released on 2014-09-18 with total page 375 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nigeria is potentially one of the giants of Africa and indeed the world. Myopia and acrebral waste by functional semi-illiterate military dictators in khaki has ruined Nigeria and continues to ruin the country. The instinct of the military is akin to those of armed robbers, as they operate by force of arms over unarmed and defenceless civilians. Military rule imposed by force of arms against unarmed and defenceless civilians is government of the people, not by the people, and not for the people. Civilian rule is not always democratic rule. Civilian rule imposed upon the people by vote-rigging machines called political parties are as effective as guns as an instrument of oppression of the people and looting of the treasury. Civilian government of the people, not by the people, and not for the people, is exactly the same as military government, as they are the masters of the people. The people did not appoint them, and the people cannot sack them. Nigeria should be governed with the best interests of children at the forefront of all that is done. Their anticipated future needs must be the pillar of every plan. Nigerians are the country’s most important natural resource, and will last far longer than its gas and oil reserves. Treat the people well and the country will respond in kind. Above all, give the poor and their children the “tool” they need to fly Nigeria above the dark clouds that cover it.

Book The Acquisition of Africa 1870 1914

Download or read book The Acquisition of Africa 1870 1914 written by Mieke van der Linden and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2016-10-05 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over recent decades, the responsibility for the past actions of the European colonial powers in relation to their former colonies has been subject to a lively debate. In this book, the question of the responsibility under international law of former colonial States is addressed. Such a legal responsibility would presuppose the violation of the international law that was applicable at the time of colonization. In the ‘Scramble for Africa’ during the Age of New Imperialism (1870-1914), European States and non-State actors mainly used cession and protectorate treaties to acquire territorial sovereignty (imperium) and property rights over land (dominium). The question is raised whether Europeans did or did not on a systematic scale breach these treaties in the context of the acquisition of territory and the expansion of empire, mainly through extending sovereignty rights and, subsequently, intervening in the internal affairs of African political entities.

Download or read book Slow Death for Slavery written by Paul E. Lovejoy and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1993-07-01 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the decline of slavery in Northern Nigeria during the first forty years of colonial rule. At the time of the British conquest, the Sokoto Caliphate was one of the largest slave societies in modern history. Rather than emancipate slaves, the colonial state abolished the legal status of slavery, encouraging them to buy their freedom. Many were unable to do so, and slavery was not finally abolished until l936. The authors have written a provocative book, raising doubts over the moral legitimacy of both the Sokoto Caliphate and the colonial state.

Download or read book The Sons of Lugard written by Smh Ellakkawi and published by . This book was released on 2012-11-01 with total page 94 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Sons of Lugard is a brightly written, readable, and thoroughly authentic tragedy/comedy that tells the remarkable story of Lord Lugard, his three negroid adopted sons, and their venture: The Nigeria Holdings. It is a story of treachery and betrayal fueled by greed, selfishness, religious bigotry and ignorance. The Sons of Lugard's strength lies in Ellakkawi's recalling a life that is, at once, recognizable to most Nigerians and yet extraordinary in its scope and texture. In today's harsh, things fall apart scenario of Nigeria, the account offers hope for Nigerians who tremble as they contemplate the geographical entity called Nigeria. The legendary author George Orwell once said that, "What I have most wanted to do thorough out the past ten years is to make political writing into an art. " The Sons of Lugard is an example of where political writing had been turned into an art.
