Book Scurvy

    Book Details:
  • Author : Stephen J. Bown
  • Publisher : Macmillan
  • Release : 2005-08-01
  • ISBN : 146681702X
  • Pages : 286 pages

Download or read book Scurvy written by Stephen J. Bown and published by Macmillan. This book was released on 2005-08-01 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scurvy took a terrible toll in the Age of Sail, killing more sailors than were lost in all sea battles combined. The threat of the disease kept ships close to home and doomed those vessels that ventured too far from port. The willful ignorance of the royal medical elite, who endorsed ludicrous medical theories based on speculative research while ignoring the life-saving properties of citrus fruit, cost tens of thousands of lives and altered the course of many battles at sea. The cure for scurvy ranks among the greatest of human accomplishments, yet its impact on history has, until now, been largely ignored. From the earliest recorded appearance of the disease in the sixteenth century, to the eighteenth century, where a man had only half a chance of surviving the scourge, to the early nineteenth century, when the British conquered scurvy and successfully blockaded the French and defeated Napoleon, Scurvy is a medical detective story for the ages, the fascinating true story of how James Lind (the surgeon), James Cook (the mariner), and Gilbert Blane (the gentleman) worked separately to eliminate the dreaded affliction. Scurvy is an evocative journey back to the era of wooden ships and sails, when the disease infiltrated every aspect of seafaring life: press gangs "recruit" mariners on the way home from a late night at the pub; a terrible voyage in search of riches ends with a hobbled fleet and half the crew heaved overboard; Cook majestically travels the South Seas but suffers an unimaginable fate. Brimming with tales of ships, sailors, and baffling bureaucracy, Scurvy is a rare mix of compelling history and classic adventure story.

Book Vitamin C

    Book Details:
  • Author : Alan B. Clemetson
  • Publisher : CRC Press
  • Release : 2018-01-10
  • ISBN : 1351094475
  • Pages : 250 pages

Download or read book Vitamin C written by Alan B. Clemetson and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2018-01-10 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The factors affecting blood vitamin C levels are described in detail in this series. Many factors such as aging, smoking, infection, trauma, surgery, hemolysis, hormone administration, heavy metals, pregnancy, alcohol, ionizing radiation and several medicines have been found to cause a disturbance of ascorbic acid metabolism and to reduce blood vitamin C levels. Indeed, abnormalities of ascorbic acid metabolism, due to factors such as smoking, occur much more frequently than does dietary vitamin C deficiency today. It is now known that low blood vitamin C levels are associated with histaminemia (high blood histamine levels), and also that ascorbate-responsive histaminemia is common in apparently healthy people. High blood histamine levels are believed to cause small hemorrhages within the inner walls of the blood vessels and these may lead to the deposition of cholesterol, as an aberrant form of wound healing. Ascorbic acid not only reduces blood histamine levels, but also aids the conversion of cholesterol to bile acids in the liver. The clinical pathological and chemical changes observed in ascorbic acid deficiency are discussed in detail. Several diseases and disorders associated with low blood vitamin C levels are also described. Possible toxic effects resulting from the oxidation of ascorbic acid are noted, and reasons for the use of D-catechin or other chelating fiber to prevent or minimize the release of ascorbate-free radical are detailed. An excellent reference for physicians, nutritionists and other scientists

Book Han Yong un Yi Kwang su

Download or read book Han Yong un Yi Kwang su written by Beongcheon Yu and published by Wayne State University Press. This book was released on 1992 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "No other modern Korean writers living under Japanese rule (1910-1945) experienced the history of their country more intimately and intensely than did Han Yong-un and Yi Kwang-su, for they were more than writers. Han was an eminent Buddhist monk, and Yi was an equally prominent national leader. Their careers crossed often, involving politics, journalism, literature, and religion. And yet they lived a world apart, pursuing opposite paths. Han was revered for his fierce commitment to Korean independence and his single volume of poems, The Silence of My Beloved. Yi, despite all his contributions to the development of modern Korean literature, particularly his first novel Heartless, has been branded a traitor for his collaboration with the Japanese. Even during their lifetimes both attained a mythical status and have since become legends of modern Korea." "In this first book-length study of Han and Yi in English, Beongcheon Yu seeks to demythify them and reassess their achievements as writers. He surveys their careers, reviewing significant events and patterns in their lives, and then confronts their literary works, weighing whatever permanence they may claim. Yu's introduction provides a historical background of modern Korea, and his conclusion brings Han and Yi together, pairing them as has never been done, in an attempt to understand them more clearly as men and as writers." "As is evident in their biographical sketches, Han and Yi had full careers - so colorful and fascinating that they constantly disrupt our proper critical attention to their writings. Yu, in his deliberate contrast of their literary achievements, provides a study of these two highly influential men that is informative and stimulating to general readers and at the same time provocative and challenging to specialists."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc.
