You can always find an interesting mixture of individuals there: professors, students, deans, administrative assistants, local artists, sheriffs, UPS truck drivers, insurance salespeople, restaurateurs, farmers, contractors, ministers, retirees, and so on. The locker-room conversation typically includes laments about the dismal play of local sports teams, complaints about the weather or the economy, and of course advice on every imaginable topic from the best way to strip old wallpaper to how to hit a nine-iron out of the rough. Some professors can always be counted on to grumble about lazy students, too many exams to grade, the puny size of our pay raises, and so on. To be honest, these topics bore me to tears. So I usually do more eavesdropping than talking. Every once in a while, though, someone will try to engage me in casual chitchat. Since I began writing the third edition of this book, I've had some version of this conversation a couple of times: Other person: So, David, how are your classes going? Me: Actually I'm not teaching right now. I'm on sabbatical. Other person: Sabbatical, huh? Must be nice, having a vacation, not having to work for months, and still getting paid! Me: [sounding annoyed] It's not a vacation! I work harder on sabbaticals than I do when I'm teaching. Other person: Sorry. Sorry. So what are you working on that's keeping you so busy? Me: I'm revising a book. Other person: Oh yeah? Impressive. What's it about? Me: Inequalities. I realize that such a one-word description is totally insufficient, but it's an effective way to squelch a conversation that I didn't want to have in the first place. And since I'm usually dressed in a towel or less when these exchanges take place, I want them to end as quickly as possible. Most people respond with unpersuasive expressions of interest ("Hmm, that sounds . . . um . . . nice."), sarcasm ("Fascinating! But if you don't mind, I'll wait for the movie version."), or vacant, deer-in-the-headlights stares. A couple of brave souls have plunged past this conversational dead end, though. A soybean farmer once said he didn't realize that I was a math teacher"--

Book excerpt: Social disparities tied to social group membership(s) are prevalent and persistent within mainstream institutions (e.g., schools/workplaces). Accordingly, psychological science has harnessed selves - which are malleable and meaningfully shaped by social group membership(s) - as solutions to inequality. We propose and review evidence that theoretical and applied impacts of leveraging 'selves as solutions' can be furthered through the use of a stigma and strengths framework. Specifically, this framework conceptualizes selves in their fuller complexity, allowing the same social group membership to be associated with stigma, risk, and devaluation as well as strengths, resilience, and pride. We provide evidence that by enacting policies and practices that (a) reduce/minimize stigma and (b) recognize/include strengths, mainstream institutions can more fully mitigate social disparities tied to inclusion, achievement and well-being. Using social groups that vary in status/power we examine implications of this framework including the potential to foster positive, recursive, and intergroup impacts on social inequalities.

The internet and globalisation fuel ignorance and anger, while the disconnect between people's reality and perceived identities has never been greater. Karl Marx outlined the idea of a material 'base' and politico-cultural 'superstructure'. According to this formula, a material reality - wealth, income, occupation - determined your politics, leisure habits, tastes, and how you made sense of the world. Today, the importance of material deprivation, in terms of threats to life, health and prosperity, are as acute as ever. But the identities apparently generated by these realities are increasingly detached from material circumstances. At the same time, different identities are needlessly conflated through a process of reeling off a list of -isms and -phobias, and are lumped together, as though these groups all somehow have something in common with one another. Th is process is not just inappropriate but obscures the specific nature of problems being faced. In The Identity Myth, David Swift covers the four different kinds of identity most susceptible to this trend - class, race, sex and age. He considers how the boundaries of identities are policed and how diverse versions of the same identity can be deployed to different ends. Ultimately, it is not that identities are simply more 'complex' than they appear but that there are more important commonalities. In a powerful call to arms, Swift argues that we must unite against these identity myths and embrace our differences to beat inequality.
