Book A Look Over My Shoulder

Download or read book A Look Over My Shoulder written by Richard Helms and published by Presidio Press. This book was released on 2004-08-31 with total page 514 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Look over My Shoulder begins with President Nixon’s attempt to embroil the Central Intelligence Agency, of which Richard Helms was then the director, in the Watergate cover-up. Helms then recalls his education in Switzerland and Germany and at Williams College; his early career as a foreign correspondent in Berlin, during which he once lunched with Hitler; and his return to newspaper work in the United States. Helms served on the German desk at OSS headquarters in London; subsequently, he was assigned to Allen Dulles’s Berlin office in postwar Germany. On his return to Washington, Helms assumed responsibility for the OSS carryover operations in Germany, Austria, and Eastern Europe. He remained in this post until the Central Intelligence Agency was formed in 1947. At CIA, Helms served in many positions, ultimately becoming the organization’s director from 1966 to 1973. He was appointed ambassador to Iran later that year and retired from government service in January 1977. It was often thought that Richard Helms, who served longer in the Central Intelligence Agency than anyone else, would never tell his story, but here it is–revealing, news-making, and with candid assessments of the controversies and triumphs of a remarkable career.

Book American Presidents A Curious Look at a Unique Cohort

Download or read book American Presidents A Curious Look at a Unique Cohort written by V.S. Dharmakumar and published by Notion Press. This book was released on 2019-09-05 with total page 846 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Believe it or not, an American president was arrested for running over a woman with his horse. He was not the only one to be arrested (two more were). George Washington preferred fox hunting with his dogs than going to church. Young Abraham Lincoln fell into a deep ditch and was saved by his dog. And after he was assassinated, his dog `Fido’ also was assassinated. Who was the President who worked as a bartender? And the one who once officially served as an executioner? The President of the United States is considered one of the world's most powerful people, leading the world’s only current superpower. His role includes being the commander-in-chief of the world's most expensive military with the largest nuclear arsenal with the nuclear button on his desk. This book is the result of over a decade of research and writing. It is a comprehensive compendium - a single-volume book, about the 44 men the entire world looked upon as the most powerful men in the world. 44 men who formed the 45 presidencies of the United States of America through 58 quadrennial presidential elections in the 230 years from 1789. This book covers the presidency of the successful liquor distributor and owner of a distillery George Washington, to the presidency of Donald Trump, the oldest, wealthiest man without any prior military or government service experience to ever assume the presidency.

Book Searching for Eden

Download or read book Searching for Eden written by James Still and published by Dramatic Publishing. This book was released on 2006 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "As one critic wrote about Searching for Eden: "In the beginning--and throughout the play--here was laughter. And the audience found it good." More than a hundred years after Mark Twain wrote his own short stories about Adam and Eve, James Still combines those stories for Act One of Searching for Eden, and then imagines Adam and Eve in the present day for Act Two to create this completely original and contemporary play about the world's first love story. Act One takes place at the dawn of time in the Garden of Eden. In the imaginations of Still and Twain, the Garden of Eden is a place where the battle of the sexes begins, where language is deliciously invented, and where loneliness and heartbreak are poignantly discovered. After intermission, we jump forward to the present day--but Adam and Eve have only aged into their 40s and are dealing with middle age and the distractions of high-power careers. Adam has surprised Eve with this trip back to Eden (a last-minute vacation package Adam found on the Internet) as an anniversary gift. The "first couple" returns to present-day Eden (now an upscale resort simply called "E") in an attempt to recapture the primal passions of their youth. While Act One is about childhood, discovery, and new love--Act Two is about middle age, rediscovery and trying to make old love new again. At its heart, Searching for Eden is about the pleasures and terrors of knowing one person--and being known by that person--for a long, long time."--Publisher's website.

Book Rubbing Shoulders With Two Presidents

Download or read book Rubbing Shoulders With Two Presidents written by Tom Graciano and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2013-06-09 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book is a memoir relating the author’s personal experiences as a free-lance journalist working in Jakarta, Indonesia, from 1965 to 1972. The early part of the book describes how he met President Soekarno and became quite close to him during the last year of his presidency. Soekarno made him sit on his chair and his girl friend on his wife’s chair during a performance one night at the president’s summer palace. He told the author, “You play president tonight.” The author also met President Suharto. The president and Mrs. Suharto invited him and a colleague to have lunch with the First Family on Monkey Island, one of the Thousand Islands Group in the Jakarta Bay. Suharto himself drove the car, with his wife next to him, in which the author and his colleague were seated on the passenger seat, on the trip from the president’s residence to the Yacht Club. Then the president was at the helm of the yacht steering her to Monkey Island. These were Indonesia’s first and second heads-of-state, more often than not portrayed by the foreign media as tyrannical and corrupt. But the author got to know the warm, friendly sides of the two leaders which he narrates in the book.
