Book excerpt: Excerpt from Looking Beyond: A Sequel to "Looking Backward," by Edward Bellamy, and an Answer to "Looking Further Forward," by Richard Michaelis This, in his book, Looking Backward, Mr. Bel lamy very ably has done. Of course, the author of that book never made pretension of being a prophet or a dictator, decreeing laws for future generations; his idea evidently was to show in a series of pic tures how, by general and scientific co-operation; an equitable system could be instituted, the thousand fold misery of human beings tainting the present system be abolished, and the welfare of all indi viduals of the human species be accomplished. If this was his object, he certainly was successful, and the immense circulation of Looking Backward shows that he struck a chord in the hearts of Ameri can and English speaking people. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Looking Backward and Forward, Vol. 2: Saturday, November 6, 1937 You can find out more about these clubs in your neighborhood by getting in touch with your county extension agents, who usually have headquarters at the county court house, or by writing to your State extension director at your State agricultural college. We would recall in closing, too, that it is not play training but real training that each boy and girl gets in u-h Club work. It's real training when you drive a team and plow the land, plant corn or cotton, fertilize and cultivate the crop, harvest and feed or market the product, make some money, put It in the bank, or buy some needed thing for family or personal use. It's real training when a girl grows a garden, gathers and sells her fresh vegetables or fruit, cans the surplus, and learns how to prepare the product for the table and fit it into the family diet. It's real training when a boy raises a litter of pigs to maturity, keeps them free from disease, feeds them for economical growth, keeps a record of costs, learns how to judge pigs, makes an exhibit at the county. Book Moving Forward Looking Back

Download or read book Moving Forward Looking Back written by Sarah M. Misemer and published by Bucknell University Press. This book was released on 2010 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many critical shifts in concepts of time and society's consciousness of modernity were derived from the railway and World Standard Time in the nineteenth century. These innovations restructred the way people viewed the world and dealt with "public" and "private" time. The forward, projectile motion along a linear track mimicked the passage of public chronological time. Conversely, the train also invoked a private, nostalgic view of tim as the traveler was yanked from his/her traditional view of the space/time continuum via the train's velocity. Travelers observed the landscape "disappear" in their backward glance from the window--although the landscape and interior compartment's space remained stagnant. This optical illusion caused passengers to perceive the world in new ways. Thus, the train unveils a conflictive blend of nostalgia and progress in the River Plate, as these countries move forward, but look back.

This book was released on 2017-11-25 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Looking Backward, 2000-1887, or Life in the Year 2000, A. D The reader who Observes the dates alluded to will Of course recognize in these disturbances of industry the first and incoherent phase Of the great movement which ended in the establish ment Of the modern industrial system with all its social consequences. This is all so plain in the retrospect that a child can understand it, but not being prophets we of that day had no clear idea of what was happening to us. What we did see was that industrially the country was in a very queer way. The relation between the working man and the employer, between labour and capital, appeared in some unaccountable manner to have become dislocated. The working classes had quite suddenly and very generally become infected with a profound discontent with their condition, and an idea that it could be greatly bettered if they\ only knew how to go about it.
