Book Looking Down the Corridors

Download or read book Looking Down the Corridors written by Kevin Wright and published by The History Press. This book was released on 2015-05-04 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between 1945 and 1990 the Western Allies mounted some of the most audacious and successful intelligence collection operations of the Cold War. Conducted in great secrecy, aircrews flew specially modified transport and training aircraft along the Berlin Air Corridors and Control Zone to gather intelligence on Soviet and East German military targets in the German Democratic Republic and around Berlin. The Air Corridors comprised three regulated airways for civil and military air traffic that connected West Berlin to West Germany. Operating under the guise of innocent transport and training flights, the pilots used their right of access to gather huge amounts of imagery for forty-five years. They also provided the western intelligence community with unique knowledge of the organisation and equipment used by Warsaw Pact forces. For the first time, using recently declassified materials and extensive interviews with those involved, Looking Down the Corridors provides a detailed account and analysis of these operations and their unique contribution to the Cold War.

Book excerpt: The fourth instalment in the epic Magic Crystals series, following the events of 'Hunt and Power’. A great war has enveloped the world, sweeping all before it and sending John and his friends, now wanted criminals scurrying for cover. While those who can must take the frontline to protect as many innocent lives as possible, the Hammerson family and their army of loyal Hammerhearts swiftly take control of two thirds of the world, using magic to impact the minds of those previously in power to make them cave. John must struggle on two fronts as his social and romantic lives become ever more complicated, and he must be mindful of his safety every time he leaves the shelter of the Woodward Sorcerers' headquarters. Several of his friends would learn this lesson at enormous cost. The only chance our heroes have of survival is in the shape of a jittery old man, who may have all the answers; but in order to find out, the Chopville teens must undergo a journey of discovery and understanding first.

Book The Short Story after Apartheid

Download or read book The Short Story after Apartheid written by Graham K. Riach and published by Liverpool University Press. This book was released on 2023-10-15 with total page 141 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Short Story after Apartheid offers the first major study of the anglophone short story in South Africa since apartheid’s end. By focusing on the short story this book complicates models of South African literature dominated by the novel and contributes to a much-needed generic and formalist turn in postcolonial studies. Literary texts are sites of productive struggle between formal and extra-formal concerns, and these brief, fragmentary, elliptical, formally innovative stories offer perspectives that reframe or revise important concerns of post-apartheid literature: the aesthetics of engaged writing, the politics of the past, class and race, the legacies of violence, and the struggle over the land. Through an analysis of key texts from the period by Nadine Gordimer, Ivan Vladislavić, Zoë Wicomb, Phaswane Mpe, and Henrietta Rose-Innes, this book assesses the place of the short story in post-apartheid writing and develops a fuller model of how artworks allow and disallow forms of social thought.

Book excerpt: We spend our lives moving through passages, hallways, corridors, and gangways, yet these channeling spaces do not feature in architectural histories, monographs, or guidebooks. They are overlooked, undervalued, and unregarded, seen as unlovely parts of a building’s infrastructure rather than architecture. This book is the first definitive history of the corridor, from its origins in country houses and utopian communities in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, through reformist Victorian prisons, hospitals, and asylums, to the “corridors of power,” bureaucratic labyrinths, and housing estates of the twentieth century. Taking in a wide range of sources, from architectural history to fiction, film, and TV, Corridors explores how the corridor went from a utopian ideal to a place of unease: the archetypal stuff of nightmares.

Book excerpt: Stop! Danger! Sex for sale! A red light can signify any one of those, but in a radio station it means a microphone has gone live: the walls may be soundproof, but in a studio space, everyone can hear you scream...or sneeze. For twenty-five years, Jeff Zycinski worked for BBC Radio and became the longest-serving boss of Radio Scotland. He made the big decisions - buying a new vacuum cleaner for the Selkirk office - and chaired a meeting that almost erupted in violence when someone suggested cats were better than dogs. He has a lot to say about Brexit, Scottish Independence, football, BBC bias, Islam and strippers...but not in this book. Okay, he talks about them a bit...mainly the strippers. An affectionate, humorous account of inside life at the Beeb - you will never buy chips in the same way again!
