Book Employee Performance Appraisal Systems

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In this study, 318 supervisors and staff members of a medium sized northwestern university responded to a questionnaire concerning their performance appraisal system and the effects it has on communication with their organization. Several key finding resulted. First, when staff members perceived their supervisors were providing valid, timely appraisals they felt there was more teamwork, information flow, and involvement in the organization than those employees that did not feel their appraisals were valid. Second, as supervisors believed performance appraisals were linked to important outcomes, staff members perceptions of appraisals rose. Finally, contrary to the literature, supervisors reported that when they conducted appraisals in a compliant manner performance appraisal discomfort decreased. This can be attributed to the lack of important outcomes being linked to the appraisals. In this university, 39% of the staff members reported they had not received their appraisals as required"--Leaf iii.

Book Understanding Performance Appraisal

Download or read book Understanding Performance Appraisal written by Kevin R. Murphy and published by SAGE. This book was released on 1995-01-03 with total page 528 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on a previous book by the same authors, Understanding Performance Appraisal delineates a social-psychological model of the appraisal process that emphasizes the goals pursued by raters, ratees, and the various users of performance appraisal. The authors apply this goal-oriented perspective to developing, implementing, and evaluating performance appraisal systems. This perspective also emphasizes the context in which appraisal occurs and demonstrates that the shortcomings of performance appraisal are in fact sensible adaptations to its various requirements, pressures, and demands. Relevant research is summarized and recommendations are offered for future research and applications. Graduate-level students, organizational development consultants and trainers, human resource managers, faculty and scholars, and psychologists in human resource management as well as other professionals who conduct research on performance appraisal programs will find this book not only interesting but also a valuable resource.

Book Impact of Organizational Signals on Dynamic Performance Appraisal

Download or read book Impact of Organizational Signals on Dynamic Performance Appraisal written by Jordan Dovel and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One employee's work performance can be hard to predict, partially because it can vary substantially day-to-day. Prior research has suggested that supervisors may incorporate dynamic performance information (e.g., performance variability and extremes) into overall performance judgments of their subordinates, but the extant research has yielded inconclusive results. This research drew on judgment and decision-making research to investigate the impact of performance variability and extremes on holistic performance ratings. The current study also investigated whether ratings of performance profiles were affected by situational information (e.g., observed organizational behaviors, organizational value statements) signaling what the organization values in terms of performance. This study varied the mean, variability, peak, and trough performance using a nomothetic judgment inference design and investigated the impact of experimental manipulations of organizational values. Results demonstrated that the mean was a strong predictor of overall ratings, but performance variability and extremes did not show a main effect on ratings. Results did not support the notion that variability would interact with extremes to predict ratings. Organizational signals communicating a desire for a consistent (i.e., low variability) performance increased rater reliance on variability information. Implications and directions for future research are discussed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The main objective of the report is to review the international, quantitative literature on the effects of individual, task, social, group, leader and organizational factors on both employee well-being and performance at work. We also report the results of national workshops in Nordic countries, which provide practitioners ideas on workplace initiatives to improve employee well-being and performance. From our literature review, we conclude that individual and organizational factors are more often related to both employee outcomes than group or leadership factors. Employee performance was found to be a stronger outcome than employee well-being for all workplace factors. National workshops indicate that initiatives can develop factors to improve well-being and performance. We conclude with a model that identifies the different factors that promote employee well-being and performance.
