Book Longitudinal Examination of Forms of Childrens Antipathetic Relationships and Peer Social Competence An Autoregressive Cross Lagged Panel Analysis

Download or read book Longitudinal Examination of Forms of Childrens Antipathetic Relationships and Peer Social Competence An Autoregressive Cross Lagged Panel Analysis written by Sarah Elaine Barnes and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present research (N = 121) examined a) the stability of previously established, empirically derived profiles of forms of childrens dislike relationships (i.e., unilateral-received dislike, unilateral-given dislike, mutual dislike) at two time points (one academic year apart) and, b) the reciprocal, cross-lagged relations between these antipathetic profiles and a number of peer social competence measures (i.e., loneliness, peer optimism, self-perceived social competence, mutual friends, sociability nominations, and popularity nominations). The three profiles included a High Disliked profile (characterized by high unilateral-received and mutual dislike nominations), an Average Dislike profile (characterized by average dislike nominations across all indicators), and a High Dislikers profile (characterized by the lowest unilateral-received and the highest unilateral-given dislike nominations). Children were assessed as third and fourth graders (Time 1) and then as fourth and fifth graders (Time 2). Using an autoregressive cross-lagged panel model, results revealed stability in the measurements of the constructs, including both childrens most likely profile membership and social competence correlates, across time. Childrens Social Dysphoria and Sociable-Popular status at Time 1 predicted their most likely profile membership at Time 2, but childrens most likely profile membership at Time 1 did not predict any of the social competence correlates at Time 2. Gender only predicted childrens Social Dysphoria at Time 2 and was not associated with any other variables in the model. These findings suggest that the measurement of profiles based on childrens unilateral and mutual dislike hold over time and highlight indices of childrens social competence that are associated with this profile membership over time..

Book The Influences of Early Temperament and Emotion Regulation on Social Competence in Middle Childhood

Download or read book The Influences of Early Temperament and Emotion Regulation on Social Competence in Middle Childhood written by Elizabeth C Penela and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Behaviorally inhibited children are predisposed toward social difficulties, but other environmental and within-child characteristics, such as emotion regulation, also influence social development. This study longitudinally examined: (1) independent influences of behavior inhibition and emotion regulation on future social competence, (2) associations between behavior inhibition and emotion regulation, and (3) the moderating role of emotion regulation on the relation between behavior inhibition and social competence. Participants (N = 257) were enrolled in a larger study of temperament and social development. Maternal-report questionnaires and behavioral observations (ages 2 and 3) were used to assess behavior inhibition. Children's active and passive regulation strategy usage (age 5) was observed during a laboratory-based sadness-eliciting situation. Lastly, children participated in a free play task with an unfamiliar peer in the laboratory (age 7). Types of initiations, peers' responses to initiations, and play sophistication during this task were coded to assess social competence. Latent variables for behavior inhibition, emotion regulation, and social competence were created. The structural model was analyzed using structural equation modeling. Results show that highly behaviorally inhibited children are predisposed to utilize less competent regulation strategies in a sadness-eliciting situation. Furthermore, competent sadness regulation was found to influence the relation between early behavior inhibition and future social competence with an unfamiliar peer. Overall study findings elucidate developmental trajectories of risk and resilience, which informs prevention practices, particularly for highly inhibited children who are at-risk for a range of social, emotional, and academic difficulties.

Book Profiles of Children Is Classroom Relationships and Their Association to Peer Social Competence

Download or read book Profiles of Children Is Classroom Relationships and Their Association to Peer Social Competence written by Tara K. Cossel and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The nature of children's peer relationships, usually investigated in terms of mutual friends and/or mutual antipathies, is critical to their social functioning and adjustment. Recently, Olsen, Parra, Cohen, Schoffstall, and Egli (2012) offered a comprehensive framework for studying children’s peer relationships as all possible dyads within classrooms, using both friendship and antipathy nominations. This present research extended this work by systematically considering a more complete profile of all the classroom relationships of each third-sixth grade child and comparing these profiles to social functioning, including: children’s self-ratings of social competence and peer optimism, and peer nominations of sociability, showing respect, overt and relational aggression, and passive withdrawal. Results indicated that a 4-cluster solution best fit the data, (Befriending, Disregarding but Liked, Disliked, and Disliking), and these groups differed on social functioning measures. These findings help establish links between the configuration of a child's relationship types and other levels of social functioning. .

Book Children s Peer Social Competence in Relation to Extensivity of Unreciprocated Friendship Nominations

Download or read book Children s Peer Social Competence in Relation to Extensivity of Unreciprocated Friendship Nominations written by Mindi Mills Stuart and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Third- through fifth- grade students completed measures to assess loneliness, peer optimism, social preference (liking minus disliking from peers), number of mutual friends, and number of non-reciprocated friends. It is well documented that number of mutual friends is related to positive social outcome. Of interest for the present research was whether the extent of unreciprocated friendship nominations related to other indices of peer social competence (loneliness, peer optimism, and social preference). Consistent with previous research, number of mutual friends related to peer outcomes. Both loneliness and peer optimism were related to sex of the child but were not related to number of non-reciprocated friendships. Peer social preference, a measure of group acceptance by peers was significantly, and inversely, related to number of non-reciprocated friendships, for females only. These findings add to the literature by emphasizing the importance of friendships for social competence, by identifying the association of non-mutual friendships.

Book Leadership Gender and Organization

Download or read book Leadership Gender and Organization written by Mollie Painter-Morland and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-04-23 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This text provides perspectives on the way in which gender plays a role in leadership dynamics and ethics within organizations. It seeks to offer new theoretical models for thinking about leadership and organizational influence. Most studies of women’s leadership draw on an ethics of care as characteristic of the way women lead, but as such, it tends towards essentialist gender stereotypes and does little to explain the complex systemic variables that influence the functioning of women within organizations. This book moves beyond the canon in exploring alternative paradigms for thinking about leadership and gender in organizations. The authors draw on the literature available in systems thinking, systemic leadership, and gender theory to offer alternative perspectives for thinking about the ways women lead. The book offers invaluable theoretical perspectives and insightful narratives to graduate students and researchers who are interested in women’s leadership, gender and organization. It will be of interest to all women in leadership positions, but specifically to those interested in understanding the systemic nature of leadership and their role within it.
