But Bronson Howard came before Clyde Fitch, and plays have been written and acted in the United States ever since the years following the close of the French and Indian Wars. The Prince of Parthia, a romantic tragedy in blank verse, was performed in 1767 in Philadelphia. This was the first American play to be acted by professionals. It was composed by a young poet, Thomas Godfrey. He had been a pupil of William Smith, Provost of the College of Philadelphia, later the University of Pennsylvania, the scene in the mid-eighteenth century of sundry masques, dialogues and entertainments of a quasi-dramatic char acter. These academic exercises, together with the presence of a company of professional actors in Philadelphia, are supposed to have quickened Godfrey's impulse to write his tragedy. Beau Brummell alone has attained the dignity of years. And yet, because it lacks what is commonly called "structure," Clyde Fitch's comedy of over three decades ago is astonishingly modern in method. Its subject marks it as belonging to the succession of romantic plays that has been unbroken since the eighteenth century. The Copperhead, though of more recent date than Beau Brummell, somewhat resembles in workmanship the Civil War melodramas of the eighties and nineties of the last century. In theme, The Copperhead is aligned with plays on kindred subjects that began to be written during the conflict between the Colonies and England and followed the trail of American history through the difficulties with the Barbary States, the War of 1812, the [Mexican War and the Civil War. Dulcy, with its penetrating study of American business men and its deadly characterization of a droll feminine type, and The Intimate Strangers, with its wise and humorous reflections on the youngest generation, are in a sense similar in motive to the social satires which, beginning with The Contrast, have appeared from time to time on our stage. Though the acted play can be exhaustively studied only in New York, now admittedly the center of theatrical activity in the United States, the vogue of the printed play shows how general and how extended is an intelligent interest in the theatre. A collection like the present one is made in the interests of a widely distributed reading public. The growth of this public is more or less coincident with a dramatic revival that took place in England and in America about forty years ago. Hebbel's Nibelwngen was restaged and presented last winter at Berlin, the first time for eight years at least, and probably for a longer period. Dur ing the last eight years the writer has chanced upon only one other notice of the performance of these plays - Geibel's in New York, Hebbel's once in Frankfurt, and once in Hannover. Undoubtedly they are presented ofiener, but, if very often, one would expect to see more frequent notices of their production. In Vienna, Hebbel's home during the last years of his life, his trilogy is one of the stock plays of the Burgtheater in fact Priilsa one of Hebbel's most enthusiastic admirers (in his Geschichte des Neueren Dramas, v1, claims that this theatre is the only place where it can be properly performed - a rather dubious compliment in view of the excellent productions of the German classic dramas and Shakespeare in the compara tively small cities of Germany. They introduce themselves as one another to strangers, and in the second and third act of the play, become involved romantically with women while on a retreat to a lakeside mansion. The mismatched identities are the cause of the central drama in For Myself Alone, which is both comedic and dramatic in tone. The text of the play itself is quite short, at less than 20 pages. The suggested run time for the play is 75 minutes, which seems long given the brief nature of the script. The language used in For Myself Alone is certainly indicative of the fact it was written in the late 19th century. If presented in theatre today, it would thus make for an excellent period piece, or otherwise would need to be adapted for modern times. If you enjoy reading dramatic works, For Myself Alone is a brief and light read and can easily be enjoyed in one sitting. It's suitability for presentation will depend on the goal of the production, however it contains enough intrigue to make for a winning story. The notes are numerous and copious, but I trust they will commend themselves as not of the kind that paralyse the student's own mental activity by superseding the necessity for it; but rather as stimulating it by presenting suitable material in a workable form, and furnishing guidance in such a way as to lead to future independence. The material has of course been supplied in the first place by the text itself. This has been to a small extent supplemented, but chiefly elucidated and illustrated, by matter drawn from sources many of them inaccessible to the English reader. A not inconsiderable element may lay some claim to origi nality, and perhaps this will be the most valuable part of the book to the real student, because treating from the objective standpoint of the foreigner, specially of the Englishman, matters of idiomatic difficulty upon which only scattered hints are to be found in sources English or German. I may refer particularly to the notes on the particles, on the exact force, as felt in the original, of words like erst, z'ibrzlgms, vol lends, &c., and of certain familiar but peculiar modes of con ception and expression which are too completely ingrained in the consciousness of a native for him easily to make them the objects of analysis or of explanation to others.
