Book Long Term Laser Frequency Stabilization Using a Molecular Beam

Download or read book Long Term Laser Frequency Stabilization Using a Molecular Beam written by Shaoul Ezekiel and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page 21 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of the research program was the long-term stabilization of the frequency of the 5145 A argon ion laser by using an I2 resonance, observed in a molecular beam, as a reference. The major accomplishments and the status of the program are outlined below. The 5145 A argon ion laser has been locked to a hyperfine transition in a molecular beam of I2. Two methods were used to measure the long-term frequency drift. The first method is the simpler one, and only requires one additional molecular beam apparatus. Here, the laser frequency drift is monitored by measuring the shift of the laser frequency with respect to the center of the same I2 transition observed in an independent molecular beam. In the second and more conventional method, two argon lasers are independently stabilized to adjacent I2 transitions in independent molecular beams. The two laser outputs are mixed on a fast photodiode, and the resulting beat frequency gives an accurate measure of frequency stability. Both methods yielded similar results; i.e., better than one-part-in 10 to the 13th power in an integration time of about 100 seconds. This was the highest stability achieved in the visible region of the spectrum at the time the measurements were made. The shift in the stabilized laser frequency as a function of laser intensity was found to be less than two-parts-in 10 to the 14th power for a 1% change in laser intensity at I mW. This value is still an upper limit at present, pending a more detailed study.

Book Laser Frequency Stabilization for Trapped Yb Experiments

Download or read book Laser Frequency Stabilization for Trapped Yb Experiments written by Deon Anton Janse van Rensburg and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This project sets out to frequency stabilize external cavity diode lasers of wavelengths = 935 nm and 739 nm, with an eye to Ytterbium-171 ion trapping. The desired laser linewidths were below 1 MHz at 1 second observation time and the desired long term frequency drifts were below a megahertz over the course of a few hours. To stabilize the lasers, two Pound-Drever-Hall laser frequency stabilisation systems were designed, constructed and characterized. The optical frequency references used were sub-megahertz linewidth optical cavities with Invar spacers. These cavities were designed and constructed inhouse. The achieved long term stability of the stabilized lasers was 1 MHz/h over a 5 hour measurement period. The laser frequency long term stabilities are limited by the thermal stabilities of the cavity spacers. The post stabilisation laser frequency noise was lowered when compared to the free running lasers. This was observed by determining the laser frequency noise power spectral densities. From the frequency noise power spectral densities lower bounds on the locked laser linewidths were established. This lower bound is 11.92 kHz for the 739 nm wavelength laser at 1 second observation time and 5.4 kHz for the 935 nm wavelength laser. An additional system was designed and constructed to stabilize the 935 nm wavelength laser to an in-house built piezo electrically tunable cavity noise power spectral densities to simultaneously stabilize the length of the cavity to a microwave frequency referenced to a Rubidium frequency standard. Technical limitations (optical feedback into the the 935 nm wavelength laser cavity) prohibited the implementation of a stable lock of the cavity length.

This book was released on 2015 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract : A method is presented to improve the laser frequency stabilization for the optical pumping cesium clock. By comparing the laser frequency stabilization of different schemes, we verify that the light angle is an important factor that limits the long-term frequency stability. We minimize the drift of the light angle by using a fiber-coupled output, and lock the frequency of a distributed-feedback diode laser to the fluorescence spectrum of the atomic beam. The measured frequency stability is about 3.5 × 10 −11 at 1 s and reaches 1.5 × 10 −12 at 2000 s. The Allan variance keeps going down for up to thousands of seconds, indicating that the medium- and long-term stability of the laser frequency is significantly improved and perfectly fulfills the requirement for the optical pumping cesium clock.

Book Laser Frequency Stabilization with Pound Drever Hall Technique

Download or read book Laser Frequency Stabilization with Pound Drever Hall Technique written by Yin Feng and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Laser frequency stabilization is important in laser science and various researches requiring laser beams with high frequency precision. However, the changes in physical parameters of the lasers themselves and in the external environments often cause instability in the output frequency of the laser. This thesis studied the frequency locking system for a continuous-wave diode laser. Using the Pound-Drever-Hall technique, the system can significantly reduce the linewidth of an input laser with an un-stabilized linewidth. It uses a high-finesse Fabry-Perot cavity, which is mechanically and thermally isolated, as a frequency reference to measure the time-varying frequency of the input laser. An electronic feedback loop works to correct the frequency error and maintain constant optical power.

Book Frequency Stabilization of Diode Laser Pumped Solid State Lasers

Download or read book Frequency Stabilization of Diode Laser Pumped Solid State Lasers written by National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-07-07 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The goal of the NASA Sunlite program is to fly two diode-laser-pumped solid-state lasers on the space shuttle and while doing so to perform a measurement of their frequency stability and temporal coherence. These measurements will be made by combining the outputs of the two lasers on an optical radiation detector and spectrally analyzing the beat note. Diode-laser-pumped solid-state lasers have several characteristics that will make them useful in space borne experiments. First, this laser has high electrical efficiency. Second, it is of a technology that enables scaling to higher powers in the future. Third, the laser can be made extremely reliable, which is crucial for many space based applications. Fourth, they are frequency and amplitude stable and have high temporal coherence. Diode-laser-pumped solid-state lasers are inherently efficient. Recent results have shown 59 percent slope efficiency for a diode-laser-pumped solid-state laser. As for reliability, the laser proposed should be capable of continuous operation. This is possible because the diode lasers can be remote from the solid state gain medium by coupling through optical fibers. Diode lasers are constructed with optical detectors for monitoring their output power built into their mounting case. A computer can actively monitor the output of each diode laser. If it sees any variation in the output power that might indicate a problem, the computer can turn off that diode laser and turn on a backup diode laser. As for stability requirements, it is now generally believed that any laser can be stabilized if the laser has a frequency actuator capable of tuning the laser frequency as far as it is likely to drift in a measurement time. Book Frequency Stabilization of a Waveguide Laser Using Pound Drever Hall

Download or read book Frequency Stabilization of a Waveguide Laser Using Pound Drever Hall written by and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 11 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The generation of ultra-stable model-locked pulses in the 1550 regime is required for high resolution signal processing applications that include electro-optic sampling, transient probes, and optical clocks. More recently the frequency combs comprising these pulses have been applied to innovative methods of Arbitrary Waveform Generation (AWG) in the optical domain. Temporal stability in certain of these applications assumes the utmost importance. A proven approach to address the key issue, entails a significant reduction in system dimensions by means of an Erbium-Doped Waveguide Amplifier (EDWA), which can minimize adverse effects of thermal gradients. To further enhance the long term stability, a Pound-Drever-Hall (PDH) technique can be used to lock the laser to a known frequency reference, in effect allowing the cavity to compensate for the laser's drift. We report for the first time to our knowledge the result of incorporating PDH stabilization in an Erbium-Doped Waveguide Laser (EDWL), and compare this with a commercially available Erbium Doped Fiber Laser (EDFL).
