Book Deep Water

Download or read book Deep Water written by United States. National Commission on the BP Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill and Offshore Drilling and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Synopsis: On April 20, 2010, the Macondo well blew out, costing the lives of 11 men, and beginning a catastrophe that sank the Deepwater Horizon drilling rig and spilled over 4 million barrels of crude oil into the Gulf of Mexico. The spill disrupted an entire region's economy, damaged fisheries and critical habitats, and brought vividly to light the risks of deepwater drilling for oil and gas-the latest frontier in the national energy supply. Soon after, President Barack Obama appointed a seven-member Commission to investigate the disaster, analyze its causes and effects, and recommend the actions necessary to minimize such risks in the future. The Commission's report offers the American public and policymakers alike the fullest account available of what happened in the Gulf and why, and proposes actions-changes in company behavior, reform of government oversight, and investments in research and technology-required as industry moves forward to meet the nation's energy needs. Complementary reports, staff background papers, hearing records, and other materials produced by the Commission are available at www.oilspillcommission.gov.

Book Joint Analysis Group Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill

Download or read book Joint Analysis Group Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill written by Deepwater Horizon Incident Joint Information Center (U.S.). Joint Analysis Group and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This report considers data collected by the R/V Brooks McCall near the site of the Deepwater Horizon MC252 between May 8 and May 25, 2010. The Deepwater Horizon MC252 was releasing methane gas and oil in a turbulent mixture from the broken riser pipe attached to the well during this time. A plume of oil and gas rose from the release point; most of the oil reached the surface in about three hours. During the trip to the surface, some of the oil dissolved in the water column and some formed droplets. The pressure that propelled the oil out of the wellhead was strong enough to cause at least some of the oil to form water-in-oil emulsion, or mousse. Based on the 33 stations taken near the leaking wellhead, there was no indication of large-scale impacts of the oil on O2 levels during the first 35 days of the spill. The largest changes observed by the sensor were about 0.3 mL/L, which at this time, we do not believe are true O2 signals. If such a decrease occurred in the O2 minimum layer at 400 m with concentrations of about 2.7 mL/L, then the values would still be above what is generally considered hypoxic (1.4 mL/L or 2.0 mg/L). We therefore do not believe that the threat of large-scale hypoxia as a consequence of [microbial] oxidation near the wellhead at this time is a likely occurrence. However, simple calculations using the higher estimates (6/10/2010) for the amount of oil released of 1.3 million gallons/day suggest that O2 levels could decrease approximately 10% in the deep water if a significant fraction of oil remains subsurface and the rate of dispersion of the oil is low."--Executive summary. Book Deepwater Horizon

Download or read book Deepwater Horizon written by Earl Boebert and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2016-09-06 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On April 20, 2010, the crew of the floating drill rig Deepwater Horizon lost control of the Macondo oil well forty miles offshore in the Gulf of Mexico. Escaping gas and oil ignited, destroying the rig, killing eleven crew members, and injuring dozens more. The emergency spiraled into the worst human-made economic and ecological disaster in Gulf Coast history. Senior systems engineers Earl Boebert and James Blossom offer the most comprehensive account to date of BP’s Deepwater Horizon oil spill. Sifting through a mountain of evidence generated by the largest civil trial in U.S. history, the authors challenge the commonly accepted explanation that the crew, operating under pressure to cut costs, made mistakes that were compounded by the failure of a key safety device. This explanation arose from legal, political, and public relations maneuvering over the billions of dollars in damages that were ultimately paid to compensate individuals and local businesses and repair the environment. But as this book makes clear, the blowout emerged from corporate and engineering decisions which, while individually innocuous, combined to create the disaster. Rather than focusing on blame, Boebert and Blossom use the complex interactions of technology, people, and procedures involved in the high-consequence enterprise of offshore drilling to illustrate a systems approach which contributes to a better understanding of how similar disasters emerge and how they can be prevented.
