Book The Neurobiology of the Amygdala

Download or read book The Neurobiology of the Amygdala written by Basil Eleftheriou and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-13 with total page 820 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, great interest has been focused on the field of neurobiology. In the last decade, various international and regional meetings, symposia, seminars and workshops have been organized to discuss brain regions such as the hypothalamus, cerebellum, medulla, cortex and hippocampus. A number of books have been published as a consequence of these gatherings. Uniquely and singularly absent from these conclaves has been a truly interdisciplinary discussion of the amygdala. The various chapters of this book represent the formal talks presented at The Advanced Study Institute held at the Jackson Laboratory, Bar Harbor, Maine, from June 6 to 17, 1971, with funds made available from the Scientific Affairs Committee of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization and the National Science Foundation. The speakers and participants are grateful to these two institutions for being given the opportunity to gather and discuss their respective works that represent years of experi mental and clinical research centering on the amygdala. It is hoped that the experiments discussed in this book will act as a major stimulus to other scientists to initiate complementary and supplementary experiments for the better understanding of the specific role of the amygdala.

Book Central Cholinergic Systems and Behaviour

Download or read book Central Cholinergic Systems and Behaviour written by F DeFeudis and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Central Cholinergic Systems and behavior reviews experimental evidence on the possible involvement of central cholinergic systems in the regulation of animal behavior. More specifically, the book investigates the role of acetylcholine as a transmitter in the mammalian spinal cord and in central nervous function. This text also describes cholinergic involvement in some of the more fundamental processes of central nervous functions and how it may fit into overall cholinergic and non-cholinergic behavioral patterns. This book is organized into seven chapters and begins with an overview of the link between central cholinergic mechanisms and behavior, and then discusses the cholinergic roles in consciousness, emphasizing on the roles of reticular systems in the arousal mechanism. An effort is made to define the cholinergic nature of some spinal mechanisms that are apparently involved in reflexes and posture. An account of the role of cholinergic mechanisms in central respiratory control is also given, along with the function of acetylcholine as an important transmitter at many sites of the central nervous system. The book concludes by analyzing the roles of cholinergic systems in motivated behaviors, emotion, learning, and memory. This book is a valuable resource for students and researchers in fields ranging from physiology to biology and psychiatry.

Book Perspectives on Behavioral Medicine

Download or read book Perspectives on Behavioral Medicine written by Redford B. Williams and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Perspectives on Behavioral Medicine, Volume 2: Neuroendocrine Control and Behavior provides a selective overview of important recent developments in the neurosciences related to neuroendocrine control mechanisms which have important implications for major areas of interest in behavioral medicine. The book begins with a general introductory chapter that presents a synthesis of related developments in the biomedicai and behavioral sciences which have played an important role in the emergence of the field of behavioral medicine, with particular emphasis on developments in behavioral biology concerned with neuroendocrine control. The remaining chapters are organized into two parts. Part I provides an introduction to recent developments concerning neuroendocrine control, as well as a consideration of general implications of such developments for the stress field. Part II shows how the integrative efforts of the first section might be applied toward improving our understanding of the role of behavioral and psychosocial factors in several specific illnesses.

Book Psychopharmacology of Aversively Motivated Behavior

Download or read book Psychopharmacology of Aversively Motivated Behavior written by H. Anisman and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 717 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the past two decades, remarkable advances have been made in psychopharmacology, resulting in increased demands for journal space (witness the large number of journals that cater primarily or exclusively to this topic). Concomitantly, a need developed for more integration of the currently available data. To this end, numerous edited volumes in psycho pharmacology have appeared which have been primarily concerned with the role of a particular drug or system in modulating a wide variety of behaviors. While such texts have been most useful in elucidating drug mechanisms and the etiology of a number of behaviors, few attempts have been made to evaluate and integrate pharmacological treatments within a single behavioral category. Specifically, the researcher interested in understanding a given behavior from a neurochemical point of view must consult several texts, each dealing with a different chemical or system. When texts are obtained covering a broad spectrum of systems, they also invariably deal with many different behaviors, thus not allowing for complete integration within a behavioral category. The present volume was planned to meet the needs of the scientist interested in understanding neurochemical mechanisms underlying aversively motivated behavior, as well as drug effects thereon. In organizing the contents of this text, it quickly became apparent that any attempt to provide a complete overview of behavioral and pharmacological information pertaining to aversive situations was not practical for at least two reasons.

Download or read book The Amygdala written by Barbara Ferry and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The amygdala is a central component of the limbic system, which is known to play a critical role in emotional processing of learning and memory. Over these last 20 years, major advances in techniques for examining brain activity greatly helped the scientific community to determine the nature of the contribution of the amygdala to these fundamental aspects of cognition. Combined with new conceptual breakthroughs, research data obtained in animals and humans have also provided major insights into our understanding of the processes by which amygdala dysfunction contributes to various brain disorders, such as autism or Alzheimer's disease. Although the primary goal of this book is to inform experts and newcomers of some of the latest data in the field of brain structures involved in the mechanisms underlying emotional learning and memory, we hope it will also help stimulate discussion on the functional role of the amygdala and connected brain structures in these mechanisms.
