Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout the entire Cold War era, Vietnam served as a grim symbol of the ideological polarity that permeated international politics. But when the Cold War ended in 1989, Vietnam faced the difficult task of adjusting to a new world without the benefactors it had come to rely on. In Changing Worlds, David W. P. Elliott, who has spent the past half century studying modern Vietnam, chronicles the evolution of the Vietnamese state from the end of the Cold War to the present. When the communist regimes of Eastern Europe collapsed, so did Vietnam's model for analyzing and engaging with the outside world. Fearing that committing fully to globalization would lead to the collapse of its own system, the Vietnamese political elite at first resisted extensive engagement with the larger international community. Over the next decade, though, China's rapid economic growth and the success of the Asian "tiger economies," along with a complex realignment of regional and global international relations reshaped Vietnamese leaders' views. In 1995 Vietnam joined the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), its former adversary, and completed the normalization of relations with the United States. By 2000, Vietnam had “taken the plunge” and opted for greater participation in the global economic system. Vietnam finally joined the World Trade Organization in 2006. Elliott contends that Vietnam's political elite ultimately concluded that if the conservatives who opposed opening up to the outside world had triumphed, Vietnam would have been condemned to a permanent state of underdevelopment. Partial reform starting in the mid-1980s produced some success, but eventually the reformers' argument that Vietnam's economic potential could not be fully exploited in a highly competitive world unless it opted for deep integration into the rapidly globalizing world economy prevailed. Remarkably, deep integration occurred without Vietnam losing its unique political identity. It remains an authoritarian state, but offers far more breathing space to its citizens than in the pre-reform era. Far from being absorbed into a Western-inspired development model, globalization has reinforced Vietnam's distinctive identity rather than eradicating it. The market economy led to a revival of localism and familism which has challenged the capacity of the state to impose its preferences and maintain the wartime narrative of monolithic unity. Although it would be premature to talk of a genuine civil society, today's Vietnam is an increasingly pluralistic community. Drawing from a vast body of Vietnamese language sources, Changing Worlds is the definitive account of how this highly vulnerable Communist state remade itself amidst the challenges of the post-Cold War era.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We All Want to Change the World provides a cogent and fascinating evaluation of post-World War II American commercial music and its complex, multi-faceted impact on the world of politics. Tom Waldman offers articulate and compulsively readable insights into such issues as: John Lennon and Yoko Ono's fiercely political period and its decidedly mixed effect on both of their careers and the causes they championed; the violence that erupted over the Sex Pistols' performance of "God Save the Queen" at Her Majesty's Silver Jubilee; Ronald Reagan's misinterpretation of "Born in the USA"; popular song and feminism and gender issues in the political sphere; the recent trend of rock tunes being reworked as campaign songs, such as Fleetwood Mac's "Don't Stop," and Sam and Dave's "Dole Man"; and much more. There is also extensive commentary on the events of September 11th, when many of the biggest names in the history of rock music took part in two benefits to raise money for the victims' families and to lift the spirits of the country.

Book Men Masculinity and the Beatles

Download or read book Men Masculinity and the Beatles written by Martin King and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-22 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on methodologies and approaches from media and cultural studies, sociology, social history and the study of popular music, this book outlines the development of the study of men and masculinities, and explores the role of cultural texts in bringing about social change. It is against this backdrop that The Beatles, as a cultural phenomenon, are set, and their four live action films, spanning the years 1964-1970, are examined as texts through which to read changing representations of men and masculinity in 'the Sixties'. Dr Martin King considers ideas about a male revolt predating second-wave feminism, The Beatles as inheritors of the possibilities of the 1950s and The Beatles' emergence as men of ideas: a global cultural phenomenon that transgressed boundaries and changed expectations about the role of popular artists in society. King further explores the chosen Beatle texts to examine discourses of masculinity at work within them. What emerges is the discovery of discourses around resistance, non-conformity, feminized appearance, pre-metrosexuality, the male star as object of desire, and the emergence of The Beatles themselves as a text that reflected the radical diversity of a period of rapid social change. King draws valuable conclusions about the legacy of these discourses and their impact in subsequent decades.

Book The God Particle Bible

    Book Details:
  • Author : Michael Mathiesen
  • Publisher : Michael Mathiesen
  • Release : 2016-10-09
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 250 pages

Download or read book The God Particle Bible written by Michael Mathiesen and published by Michael Mathiesen. This book was released on 2016-10-09 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It should be obvious even to the Scientists that discovered the God Particle, otherwise known as the Higgs Boson, that only some form of God would be the one to send out all of his particles. But, too many of us are so objective and jaded that we miss the most obvious lessons in Science right in front of our eyes. The God Particles were the first of such things created during the Big Bang and we know this because it is only the God Particle that can give all of the other particles their mass. Not only in the subatomic world, but all of our lives depend on the God Particle Field remaining in effect from the beginning of Time all the way to the end of Time. And, if it was the first thing to be created in the universe by the Creator of the universe, do we not owe this most amazing event in the history of the universe just a little more investigation and perhaps even reverence? When you look at the universe, both to the outside of us or to the inside of us, you see the magnificent footprints and fingerprints of a master Creator. Nothing is more obvious than the fact that the way things snap together so perfectly can't possibly be an accident or a random series of events. There is an obvious patter to it, so God's Particles, the ones in the center of the current model of the common understanding of Physics and subatomic physics had to have something in the middle, like a keystone for a building, something that keeps it all together and in this model we finally have reality cemented together, or at least most of it. Today, they are saying there may be a Fifth Force in the universe and a particle that carries it. But, in order to understand that fifth force, should it prove to be real, we need to fully understand the God Particle first.. This book is for anyone who has ever wondered why major events take place in their lives for which there seems to be no explanation. The explanation is clear now thanks to the discovery in Geneva Switzerland in 2012 using the most expensive scientific apparatus in history, the Large Hadron Collider, to discover the God Particle. God is no longer just a myth and part of a mythology, no longer is God based on fairy tales, or stories in children's books. God is now based on the best Scientific exploration that is possible using the human mind. The God Particle, it turns out is the most basic fundamental force that makes everything in the universe happen according to a plan. Since the discovery of this amazing new energy, we now have at our disposal a pathway to finding our source. Since the God Particle was the first thing created by the Big Bang and since it gives everything else in the universe it's mass, the stuff that makes things matter, it is simple logic to see that the God Particle Field is the way that God promulgates his will all over the universe. That means these particles are constantly working to create all of our life's events in such a way that follows God's laws, especially the ones we call the Laws of Physics. The good news is that anyone can understand these laws and use them to their own advantage. You don't need a Ph.D in any scientific discipline to fully appreciate these concepts. All you need is a little bit of curiosity as to how the universe works and your place in it. The God Particle Bible is a new Book that will take you on an adventure in Science where they have proven the existence of God. Not only has Science proven the existence of God in the manner of the discovery of the God Particle, but they have shown us how God works his miracles in our daily lives. This book, authored by noted Science Fiction writer, Michael Mathiesen is the first of its kind to describe not only how God works, but also where God lives. The author presents us with an entire new form of "Technology" that anyone can learn to use to exploit the greatest Force in the universe, to alter one's fate or change their own destiny as well as the destiny of our entire civilization. The "Force" mentioned in Star Wars actually exists. It has now been proven to exist. The God Particle Bible is the first primer on how to use 'The Force' to benefit the individual life as well as the life of the planet and all future generations.

Book Lonelyhearts

Download or read book Lonelyhearts written by Marion Meade and published by HMH. This book was released on 2010-03-10 with total page 435 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A “breezily entertaining” look at the comic couple who hobnobbed with Dorothy Parker, S. J. Perelman, Bennett Cerf, and other luminaries of their day (The New York Times Book Review). Nathanael West—author, screenwriter, playwright—was famous for two masterpieces: Miss Lonelyhearts and The Day of the Locust, which remains one the most penetrating novels ever written about Hollywood. He was also one of the most gifted and original writers of his generation, a scathing satirist whose insight into the brutalities of modern life proved prophetic. Eileen McKenney—accidental muse, literary heroine—grew up corn-fed in the Midwest and moved to Manhattan’s Greenwich Village when she was twenty-one. The inspiration for her sister Ruth’s stories in the New Yorker under the banner of “My Sister Eileen,” she became an overnight celebrity, and her star eventually crossed with that of the man she would impulsively marry. Together, Nathanael and Eileen had entrée into a social circle that included F. Scott Fitzgerald, Dashiell Hammett, Katharine White, and many of the literary, theatrical, and film luminaries of the era. But their carefree, offbeat Broadway-to-Hollywood love story would flame out almost as soon as it began. Now, with “a great marriage of scholarship and gossip” (Minneapolis Star-Tribune), this biography restores West and McKenney to their rightful place in the popular imagination, offering “a shrewd portrait of two people who in their different ways were noteworthy participants in American culture during one of its liveliest periods” (Los Angeles Times). “Opens a window onto the lives of writers in 1930s America as they struggled with anxieties, pretensions, temptations and myths that confound our culture to this day.” —Salon.com “The first to fully chronicle and entwine these careening lives, Meade forges an engrossing, madcap, and tragic American story of ambition, reinvention, and risk.” —Booklist, starred review

Book The Impact of Information on Society

Download or read book The Impact of Information on Society written by Michael W. Hill and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2012-05-15 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new edition of Impact of Information on Society takes account of a number of new developments affecting information's impact on our lives. It also incorporates lessons to be learnt from prominent events. For example, a 'UK Freedom of Information Act', forecast in the 1st edition, is now law and so updating is necessary. The growing significance of knowledge management today requires a closer look at this field and clarification of its relation to information management. The first edition has been reviewed critically and sections have been amplified and rearranged, with new material being added where necessary. To mention just a few points: since the 1st edition, there have been amendments to copyright, data protection legislation and human rights legislation. The consequences of the enormous and growing level of use of the Internet, eMail and mobile phones (including text messaging) also requires reassessment.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The field of memory studies has long been preoccupied with the manner in which events from the past are commemorated, forgotten, re-fashioned, or worked through on both the individual and collective level. Yet in an age when various modes of artistic and cultural commemoration have begun to overlap with and respond to one another, the dynamics of cultural remembering and forgetting become bound up in an increasingly elaborate network of representations that operate both within and outside temporal, cultural, and national borders. As publicly circulating texts that straddle the line between cultural artifact and artistic object, both musical and literary works, both individually and often in conjunction with one another, help shape cultural memories and individual experiences of those events. Troping their cultural milieux through specific aesthetic and social forms, genres, and modes of dissemination, music and literature become part of a growing global panoply of raw materials upon which we might begin to pose questions regarding the way we remember, the consequences of sharing and passing on those memories, and the aesthetic and cultural pressures attendant upon the circulation and interpretation of texts that (re-)sound the past.
