Book The Psychological Journey To and From Loneliness

Download or read book The Psychological Journey To and From Loneliness written by Ami Rokach and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2019-04-06 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are three universal experiences that we cannot escape: loneliness, illness, and death. The Psychological Journey To and From Loneliness addresses what was termed the plague of the 21st century--loneliness. Loneliness is stigmatized in our society, so untold number of people walk around lonely, unable to do what is so naturally called for--make their suffering known, and approach others for company and support. Thankfully, loneliness is slowly, but steadily, coming out of the "closet." This book will highlight not only the experience and what can be done about it, but also the experiences that influence it (i.e., our childhood, cultural and religious influences, and our way of life) as well as the effects that loneliness has on various population groups and how it is experienced at different times in our lives. This volume reviews theoretical approaches to the study of loneliness: the (positive) functions that loneliness may serve in our lives; the stages in life when loneliness is quite "visible" and its effects on us; the life experiences that may strengthen the feeling that one is all alone and forgotten; life experiences that we do not commonly connect to loneliness but it is clearly present in them (e.g., pregnancy and childbirth); and the approaches that are available to copy with its pain and limit its negative effects on us. The book closes with a review of how psychotherapy can assist those who need encouragement and support in their struggle with loneliness. The book is particularly suitable for academics, researchers, and clinicians who aim to help clients identify, address, and cope with loneliness. Presents the latest research on the development, causes and effects of loneliness Studies loneliness in childhood, adolescence, and middle and old age Outlines what can be done to limit the negative effects of loneliness on an individual Looks at how childhood, cultural, religious and other influences affect loneliness

Book Alone and Invisible No More

Download or read book Alone and Invisible No More written by Allan S. Teel and published by Chelsea Green Publishing. This book was released on 2011 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Within the next two decades, tens of millions of Americans will reach the age where they will need either significant support to stay in their own homes or a cost-effective residential alternative. The current state of elder care in America is appalling, expensive, and unsustainable. It underserves the majority of elderly Americans and bankrupts all but the richest few while virtually ignoring this population's complex physical and mental needs. At a time when we should be celebrating the achievements and wisdom of the oldest citizens, we instead find ways to overmedicate and isolate them in dehumanizing nursing-home facilities. And space for more residents within this system is running out. There must be a better way! In Alone and Invisible No More, physician Dr. Allan S. Teel, MD, describes a philosophy and a course of action that have turned aging in place into a viable alternative for dozens of elderly residents in Damariscotta, Maine. Teel lays out a course of action to expand his approach to the millions of Americans approaching retirement age and how these techniques can be used to avert the financial and personal disaster approaching nationwide. He discusses the resources--both technological and professional--needed to guide this transition and the community support that will be critical to its success. Taking this "Maine Approach" to the rest of the country could create a climate where Americans welcome rather than fear the approach of their golden years"--Provided by publisher.

Book Social Isolation and Loneliness in Older Adults

Download or read book Social Isolation and Loneliness in Older Adults written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2020-05-14 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Social isolation and loneliness are serious yet underappreciated public health risks that affect a significant portion of the older adult population. Approximately one-quarter of community-dwelling Americans aged 65 and older are considered to be socially isolated, and a significant proportion of adults in the United States report feeling lonely. People who are 50 years of age or older are more likely to experience many of the risk factors that can cause or exacerbate social isolation or loneliness, such as living alone, the loss of family or friends, chronic illness, and sensory impairments. Over a life course, social isolation and loneliness may be episodic or chronic, depending upon an individual's circumstances and perceptions. A substantial body of evidence demonstrates that social isolation presents a major risk for premature mortality, comparable to other risk factors such as high blood pressure, smoking, or obesity. As older adults are particularly high-volume and high-frequency users of the health care system, there is an opportunity for health care professionals to identify, prevent, and mitigate the adverse health impacts of social isolation and loneliness in older adults. Social Isolation and Loneliness in Older Adults summarizes the evidence base and explores how social isolation and loneliness affect health and quality of life in adults aged 50 and older, particularly among low income, underserved, and vulnerable populations. This report makes recommendations specifically for clinical settings of health care to identify those who suffer the resultant negative health impacts of social isolation and loneliness and target interventions to improve their social conditions. Social Isolation and Loneliness in Older Adults considers clinical tools and methodologies, better education and training for the health care workforce, and dissemination and implementation that will be important for translating research into practice, especially as the evidence base for effective interventions continues to flourish.

Book Made in Heaven Fleshed Out on Earth

Download or read book Made in Heaven Fleshed Out on Earth written by Nancy Fowler Christenson and published by Tate Publishing. This book was released on 2009-06 with total page 357 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After a passionate but pure courtship, Nancy Fowler anticipated uninhibited sexual bliss in her marriage to Greg Christenson. She couldn't have been more surprised and bewildered when, once the vows were said, 'someone turned off the passion switch.' Made in Heaven, Fleshed Out on Earth opens with the author's misguided stumblings through the wilderness of the Christian singles scene (Chasing Mr. Wrong), continues through the heady and supernatural adventures of Finding Mr. Right, and arrives at Ever After, where the bride and groom make their unhappy discovery: the landscape doesn't look anything like what either of them imagined. Believing, however, that every marriage is Made in Heaven and that God is a very present help as His design is Fleshed Out on Earth, they journey on together, choosing to trust that God will eventually cause them to triumph. Indeed He does, in the eleventh year of their marriage, sovereignly bringing enduring wholeness and freedom into their love life. Nancy Fowler Christenson's story is both an inspiration and a caution to young singles, and a rekindling of faith and hope to husbands and wives still struggling on that journey.

Book Refuge and Resilience

Download or read book Refuge and Resilience written by Laura Simich and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-06-05 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Taking an interdisciplinary approach and focusing on the social and psychological resources that promote resilience among forced migrants, this book presents theory and evidence about what keeps refugees healthy during resettlement. The book draws on contributions from cultural psychiatry, anthropology, ethics, nursing, psychiatric epidemiology, sociology and social work. Concern about immigrant mental health and social integration in resettlement countries has given rise to public debates that challenge scientists and policy makers to assemble facts and solutions to perceived problems. Since the 1980s, refugee mental health research has been productive but arguably overly-focused on mental disorders and problems rather than solutions. Social science perspectives are not well integrated with medical science and treatment, which is at odds with social reality and underlies inadequacy and fragmentation in policy and service delivery. Research and practice that contribute to positive refugee mental health from Canada and the U.S. show that refugee mental health promotion must take into account social and policy contexts of immigration and health care in addition to medical issues. Despite traumatic experiences, most refugees are not mentally ill in a clinical sense and those who do need medical attention often do not receive appropriate care. As recent studies show, social and cultural determinants of health may play a larger role in refugee health and adaptation outcomes than do biological factors or pre-migration experiences. This book’s goal therefore is to broaden the refugee mental health field with social and cultural perspectives on resilience and mental health.
