Book excerpt: This is an annotated and illustrated republication of Churchill's despatches while serving as a war correspondent for London's 'Morning Post' during the Second Boer War. It covers the period from October 1899 until March of 1900. It is highlighted by Churchill's capture during the ambush of an Armoured Train in Natal, and his subsequent escape from the Officer's Prison in Pretoria; followed by his return to action as a lieutenant in the South African Light Horse regiment for the remainder of the campaign to relieve the siege of Ladysmith. It includes his first hand experiences during the battles of Spion Kop, Val Krantz and the Tugela Heights as well as the Relief of Ladysmith. In 1923 wrote and published in several magazines an account of his escape that recognized the courage of the people who had assisted him. These persons and events were by necessity not identified in his original book. The work has also been augmented with as many additional contemporary newspaper and personal accounts of the same events by his compatriots during the campaign. Additions to the text also include articles related to his family and an article discussing the controversy relating to Churchill's use of a Mauser C96 pistol during the campaign. The compilation of these works, their annotation, illustration, and expansion with additional authored material were undertaken by Payton Fireman, JD. This is volume 2 of the series: The Last Horse War.

The last cry of 'Any more for the shore?' had sounded, the last good-bye had been said, the latest pressman or photographer had scrambled ashore, and all Southampton was cheering wildly along a mile of pier and promontory when at 6 P.M., on October 14, the Royal Mail steamer 'Dunottar Castle' left her moorings and sailed with Sir Redvers Buller for the Cape. For a space the decks remained crowded with the passengers who, while the sound of many voices echoed in their ears, looked back towards the shores swiftly fading in the distance and the twilight, and wondered whether, and if so when, they would come safe home again; then everyone hurried to his cabin, arranged his luggage, and resigned himself to the voyage. What an odious affair is a modern sea journey! In ancient times there were greater discomforts and perils; but they were recognised. A man took ship prepared for the worst. Nowadays he expects the best as a matter of course, and is, therefore, disappointed. Besides, how slowly we travel! In the sixteenth century nobody minded taking five months to get anywhere. But a fortnight is a large slice out of the nineteenth century; and the child of civilisation, long petted by Science, impatiently complains to his indulgent guardian of all delay in travel, and petulantly calls on her to complete her task and finally eliminate the factor of distance from human calculations. A fortnight is a long time in modern life. It is also a long time in modern war—especially at the beginning. To be without news for a fortnight at any time is annoying. To be without news for a fortnight now is a torture. And this voyage lasts more than a fortnight! At the very outset of our enterprise we are compelled to practise Mr. Morley's policy of patience.

Relatively little however has appeared which deals specifically or holistically with his first senior ministerial role; that of Secretary of State for the Home Office. This may be due to the fact that, of the three Great Offices of State which he was to occupy over the course of his long political life, his tenure as Home Secretary was the briefest. The Liberal Government, of which he was a senior figure, had been elected in 1906 to put in place social and political reform. Though Churchill was at the forefront of these matters, his responsibility for domestic affairs led to him facing other, major, challenges departmentally; this was a time of substantial commotion on the social front, with widespread industrial and civil strife. Even given that ‘Home Secretaries never do have an easy time’, his period in office was thus marked by a huge degree of political and social turbulence. The terms ‘Tonypandy’ and ‘Peter the Painter’ perhaps spring most readily to mind. Rather less known is his involvement in one of the burning issues of the time, female suffrage, and his portrayal as ‘the prisoners’ friend’ in terms of penal reform. Aged 33 on appointment, and the youngest Home Secretary since 1830, he became empowered to wield the considerable executive authority inherent in the role of one of His Majesty's Principal Secretaries of State, and he certainly did not shrink from doing so. There were of course commensurate responsibilities, and how he shouldered them is worth examination.
