Download or read book London s Transport From Roman Times to the Present Day written by Anthony Burton and published by Pen and Sword Transport. This book was released on 2022-09-15 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Transport systems are the lifeblood of all great cities and this is certainly true of London. As far back as Roman times, their city Londinium was the hub of a network of roads leading out to all the major centres of the time. It was the Romans who gave the city its first bridge across the Thames and its first paved roadways. This book tells the story of London’s roads and bridges and the vehicles that used them. For centuries, transport meant horse drawn vehicles, from lumbering waggons to elegant carriages and the city had a flourishing industry, building carriages. The Industrial Revolution brought major changes, not least in the construction of more and more bridges over the Thames. In the 19th century a new system appeared with the arrival of the railways, and the many stations that are such prominent features of the cityscape. The story continues into the 20th century, when, for a time, the city was also home to some pioneering motor car manufacturers, such as Vauxhall. It comes nearer our time with the construction of the underground railway and the driverless trains of the Dockland Light Railway. Londoners will have a chance to find out just how travel around the city has changed in the last two thousand years.

Download or read book The History of the Port of London written by Peter Stone and published by Casemate Publishers. This book was released on 2017-08-30 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “This meticulously researched account underlines the importance of the capital’s docklands . . . from Roman landing to modern financial centre.” —Discover Britain The River Thames has been integral to the prosperity of London since Roman times. Explorers sailed away on voyages of discovery to distant lands. Colonies were established and a great empire grew. Funding their ships and cargoes helped make the City of London into the world’s leading financial center. In the nineteenth century a vast network of docks was created for ever-larger ships, behind high, prison-like walls that kept them secret from all those who did not toil within. Sail made way for steam as goods were dispatched to every corner of the world. In the nineteenth century London was the world’s greatest port city. In the Second World War the Port of London became Hitler’s prime target. It paid a heavy price but soon recovered. Yet by the end of the 20th century the docks had been transformed into Docklands, a new financial center. The History of the Port of London: A Vast Emporium of Nations is the fascinating story of the rise and fall and revival of the commercial river. The only book to tell the whole story and bring it right up to date, it charts the foundation, growth and evolution of the port and explains why for centuries it has been so important to Britain’s prosperity. This book will appeal to those interested in London’s history, maritime and industrial heritage, the Docklands and East End of London, and the River Thames.
Download or read book Betty s Travel Journals written by Elisabeth Hewes and published by Paragon Publishing. This book was released on 2011-04 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The travels and observations of Elisabeth Hewes in her retirement years, during the last decade of the 20th century. With contributions by Stephen Butt and John Florance of BBC Radio Leicester During her retirement years, apart from her diaries, Elisabeth Hewes of Ravenstone in Leicestershire, wrote of her many travels, which were often accomplished in just one day. Betty's Travel Journals begin in April 1992 and finish at the end of 2000. They give a vivid insight into her love of life and people; we see familiar things through different eyes and visit unknown places which leave us with a feeling that we must go there ourselves. Travelling by road, rail, or merely on foot, Betty uses only the most salient points to describe her world in rich colours, but always with humour, intelligence and that steadfast sense of belonging and purpose found in her diaries. As Betty counts down to the New Millennium, she meticulously records her high days and holidays. We travel with her the length and breadth of Britain: from Bardon Hill Quarry to Buckingham Palace; from mighty Canterbury Cathedral to Snibston's little St. Mary's; from the most serene and tranquil Lakeland view to the busiest bustling day in the heart of our nation's great capital. Her journals feature hundreds of indexed and detailed entries in which she quotes from sources as diverse as the essays of Dr. Johnson and her local newspaper, each equally as relevant and informative as the next. Betty's Travel Journals are laced together with a strong historical and religious narrative but with an ever watchful eye on history in the making. Her travels were not confined to distance however; the 1990s saw incredible strides made by humankind and Betty documents our world's biggest events in the final years of the twentieth century as they play out alongside her journey through what turned out to be the last decade of her life.

Download or read book Empires of Antiquities written by Billie Melman and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2020-03-31 with total page 549 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Empires of Antiquities is a history of the rediscovery of civilizations of the ancient Near East in the imperial order that evolved between the outbreak of the First World War and the 1950s. It explores the ways in which Near Eastern antiquity was redefined and experienced, becoming the subject of new regulation, new modes of knowledge, and international and local politics. A series of globally publicized spectacular archaeological discoveries in Iraq, Egypt, and Palestine, which the book follows, made antiquity visible, palpable and accessible as never before. The new uses of antiquity and its relations to modernity were inseparable from the emergence of the post-war world order, imperial collaboration and collisions, and national aspirations. Empires of Antiquities uniquely combines a history of the internationalization of a new "regime of archaeology" under the oversight of the League of Nations and its web of institutions, a history of British passions for Near Eastern antiquity, on-the-ground colonial mechanisms and nationalist claims on the past. It points to the centrality of the mandate system, particularly mandates classified A, in Mesopotamia/Iraq, Palestine and Transjordan, formerly governed by the Ottoman Empire, and of Egypt, in a new culture of antiquity. Drawing on an unusually wide range of archives in several countries, as well as on visual and material evidence, the book weaves together imperial, international, and local histories of institutions, people, ideas and objects and offers an entirely new interpretation of the history of archaeological discovery and its connections to empires and modernity.

Download or read book The Shaping of London written by Paul Balchin and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-05-03 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 2014, The Shaping of London chronologically examines the likely impact of wars, dynastic struggles, demographic change and economic growth on the physical fabric of London. The book traces the evolution of architectural style in London within the context of politics and economics, it looks at architecture over broad periods from Romanesque to Jacobean, and from Palladian to Victorian. Looking at the changes of London from 1066 to 1870, Balchin argues that London was created through a mixture of kings, merchants, governors and industrialists, which has lent itself to the creation of notable buildings, and public places in London and in turn their spatial dispersal has helped to determine the shape and areal extent of the metropolis.
