Download or read book Logic or the Analytic of Explicit Reasoning written by George H. Smith and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-25 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Logic or the Analytic of Explicit Reasoning It is well known to those conversant with the current literature of Logic that recent logical theories diverge widely from the old Logic of Aristotle and the Schoolmen, and no less widely from each other. From this it happens that, under the common name of Logic, we have many doctrines essentially different from each other; and the student who desires to enter upon the study of the subject is thus confronted with the preliminary problem of determining under what name the true Logic is to be found. Nor in this case can he expect much help from his instructors; who, like the rest of the logicians, are hopelessly at a loss. Whether he shall study Logic - whatever may be his wishes and his determination - must therefore be a matter for chance to determine. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Where accounts of the relation between language and mind often rest on the concept of representation, Brandom sets out an approach based on inference, and on a conception of certain kinds of implicit assessment that become explicit in language. It is the first attempt to work out a detailed theory rendering linguistic meaning in terms of use.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I have tried to make this book an argument, not a catalogue of dogmas. Its ideal reader will find himself constantly asking questions, for which he will insist on finding his own answers. To avoid wasting his time, I have made the fullest use of authentic illustrations from newspapers, books, and other contemporary sources. One of the wisest things ever said about our subject is that “Logic, like whiskey, loses its beneficial effect when taken in too large doses.” While bearing this constantly in mind, I have also aimed at a high level of accuracy and the inclusion of nothing that would have to be unlearnt at a more advanced level of study. This book could never have been written without the help of the students to whom I have lectured on logic and scientific method. My chief obligations are to them. Logic ought to be easy, interesting, and enjoyable. This book will have been successful if it helps some readers to find it so.—Prof. Max Black

Book Rationality and Reasoning

Download or read book Rationality and Reasoning written by Jonathon St. B.T. Evans and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2013-09-13 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses an apparent paradox in the psychology of thinking. On the one hand, human beings are a highly successful species. On the other, intelligent adults are known to exhibit numerous errors and biases in laboratory studies of reasoning and decision making. There has been much debate among both philosophers and psychologists about the implications of such studies for human rationality. The authors argue that this debate is marked by a confusion between two distinct notions: (a) personal rationality (rationality1 Evans and Over argue that people have a high degree of rationality1 but only a limited capacity for rationality2. The book re-interprets the psychological literature on reasoning and decision making, showing that many normative errors, by abstract standards, reflect the operation of processes that would normally help to achieve ordinary goals. Topics discussed include relevance effects in reasoning and decision making, the influence of prior beliefs on thinking, and the argument that apparently non-logical reasoning can reflect efficient decision making. The authors also discuss the problem of deductive competence - whether people have it, and what mechanism can account for it. As the book progresses, increasing emphasis is given to the authors' dual process theory of thinking, in which a distinction between tacit and explicit cognitive systems is developed. It is argued that much of human capacity for rationality1 is invested in tacit cognitive processes, which reflect both innate mechanisms and biologically constrained learning. However, the authors go on to argue that human beings also possess an explicit thinking system, which underlies their unique - if limited - capacity to be rational.

Book Reflective Equilibrium and the Principles of Logical Analysis

Download or read book Reflective Equilibrium and the Principles of Logical Analysis written by Jaroslav Peregrin and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2017-02-10 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a comprehensive account of logic that addresses fundamental issues concerning the nature and foundations of the discipline. The authors claim that these foundations can not only be established without the need for strong metaphysical assumptions, but also without hypostasizing logical forms as specific entities. They present a systematic argument that the primary subject matter of logic is our linguistic interaction rather than our private reasoning and it is thus misleading to see logic as revealing "the laws of thought". In this sense, fundamental logical laws are implicit to our "language games" and are thus more similar to social norms than to the laws of nature. Peregrin and Svoboda also show that logical theories, despite the fact that they rely on rules implicit to our actual linguistic practice, firm up these rules and make them explicit. By carefully scrutinizing the project of logical analysis, the authors demonstrate that logical rules can be best seen as products of the so called reflective equilibrium. They suggest that we can profit from viewing languages as "inferential landscapes" and logicians as "geographers" who map them and try to pave safe routes through them. This book is an essential resource for scholars and researchers engaged with the foundations of logical theories and the philosophy of language.

Book Automated Reasoning with Analytic Tableaux and Related Methods

Download or read book Automated Reasoning with Analytic Tableaux and Related Methods written by Uwe Egly and published by Springer. This book was released on 2003-08-02 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the International Conference on Automated Reasoning with Analytic Tableaux and Related Methods, TABLEAUX 2002, held in Copenhagen, Denmark, in July/August 2002. The 20 revised full papers and two system descriptions presented together with two invited contributions were carefully reviewed and selected for inclusion in the book. All current issues surrounding the mechanization of logical reasoning with tableaux and similar methods are addressed. Among the logic calculi investigated are linear logic, temporal logic, modal logics, hybrid logic, multi-modal logics, fuzzy logics, Goedel logic, Lukasiewicz logic, intermediate logics, quantified boolean logic, and, of course, classical first-order logic.

Book Analysis and Synthesis of Logics

Download or read book Analysis and Synthesis of Logics written by Walter Carnielli and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-01-22 with total page 612 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Starting with simple examples showing the relevance of cutting and pasting logics, the monograph develops a mathematical theory of combining and decomposing logics, ranging from propositional and first-order based logics to higher-order based logics as well as to non-truth functional logics. The theory covers mechanisms for combining semantic structures and deductive systems either of the same or different nature. The issue of preservation of properties is addressed.

Book Reading Brandom

Download or read book Reading Brandom written by Bernhard Weiss and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2010-04-13 with total page 812 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Robert Brandom’s Making It Explicit: Reasoning, Representing and Discursive Commitment is one of the most significant, talked about and daunting books published in philosophy in recent years. Featuring specially-commissioned chapters by leading international philosophers with replies by Brandom himself, Reading Brandom clarifies, critically appraises and furthers understanding of Brandom’s important book. Divided into four parts - ‘Normative Pragmatics’; ‘The Challenge of Inferentialism’; ‘Inferentialist Semantics’; and ‘Brandom’s Replies’, Reading Brandom covers the following key aspects of Brandom’s work: inferentialism vs. representationalism normativity in philosophy of language and mind pragmatics and the centrality of asserting language entries and exits meaning and truth semantic deflationism and logical locutions. Essential reading for students and scholars of philosophy of language and mind, Reading Brandom is also an excellent companion volume to Reading McDowell: On Mind and World, also published by Routledge.
