Book excerpt: When the struggle of the Union leaders of Kentucky is thus characterized, surely it is in order topresent the facts which repel the charge, and justify their conduct. When it is gravely written, in accepted histories of Kentucky, that the "flower of the military material of Kentucky went into the Confederate army," surely it is in order to present the record-facts of the period which show that the most conspicuous "rush to arms" in Kentucky was to save the Union, and not to destroy it.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A little known fact about the Hatfield and McCoy Feud is that nearly all of the men involved were also Civil War veterans. The Hatfield patriarch, William Anderson “Devil Anse” Hatfield, served in the Confederate army 1861-1865. He fought in numerous skirmishes along the border territories of western Virginia and Kentucky. Unfortunately, most popular accounts of Devil Anse’s Confederate service are based on legends rather than facts. Many also overlooked important details linking his Civil War service to the famous feud. Using official military records, newspaper accounts, and other historic sources, the author debunks several myths and sheds more insight into one of the most mysterious characters in American folk history.

This book was released on 2006-10 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Civil War Regiments from Kentucky and Tennessee" provides concise regimental histories of the infantry and cavalry regiments and artillery batteries that fought for the Union from the Bluegrass and Volunteer states. Kentucky contributed over 51,000 white and 23,000 African-American troops to the Union, of which over 10,000 died while in service. Of the deaths, about one-quarter were killed in action or from wounds received in battle. Kentucky raised fifty-five infantry regiments, seventeen cavalry regiments, and 5 artillery batteries. Five regiments (3rd, 5th, 6th, 25th, and 17th) are listed in William F. Fox's Three Hundred Fighting Regiments found in "Regimental Losses in the American Civil War." Tennessee provided over 31,000 white troops to the Union cause, losing nearly 7,000 in dead--744 from combat-related wounds. Nearly ten regiments of cavalry, nearly ten regiments of infantry, and a few artillery batteries mustered into Federal service from Tennessee, despite the state having seceded.
