Book LOFT Facility and Test Program

Download or read book LOFT Facility and Test Program written by and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Loss-of-Fluid Test (LOFT) test facility, program objectives, and the experiments planned are described. The LOFT facility is related to the smaller Semiscale facility and the larger commercial pressurized water reactors. The fact that LOFT is a computer model assessment tool rather than a demonstration test is emphasized. Various types of reactor safety experiments planned through 1983 are presented.

Book LOFT Advanced Control Room Operator Diagnostic and Display System ODDS

Download or read book LOFT Advanced Control Room Operator Diagnostic and Display System ODDS written by and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Loss-of-Fluid Test (LOFT) Reactor Facility in Idaho includes a highly instrumented nuclear reactor operated by the Department of Energy for the purpose of establishing nuclear safety requirements. The results of the development and installation into LOFT of an Operator Diagnostic and Display System (ODDS) are presented. The ODDS is a computer-based graphics display system centered around a PRIME 550 computer with several RAMTEK color graphic display units located within the control room and available to the reactor operators. Use of computer-based color graphics to aid the reactor operator is discussed. A detailed hardware description of the LOFT data system and the ODDS is presented. Methods and problems of backfitting the ODDS equipment into the LOFT plant are discussed.

Book LOFT Contribution to PWR Fuel Analysis and Testing

Download or read book LOFT Contribution to PWR Fuel Analysis and Testing written by and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The paper provides a brief overview of the Loss-of-Fluid Test (LOFT) Facility, a review of the key results from LOCA tests performed to date, and plans for the future of LOFT, as an introduction to the more specific information about LOFT fuel that is to follow. The purpose of the LOFT tests is to provide data for assessing the accuracy of the analytical models used in evaluating the safety of commercial nuclear power plants. While the main purpose of LOFT is to investigate phenomena important to the loss-of-coolant accident (LOCA), the 55 MWt LOFT reactor system has been scaled to commercial power reactors and heavily instrumented so that information on fuel and system behavior over a range of normal and off-normal conditions can be obtained.

Book Overview of the LOFT Experimental Program

Download or read book Overview of the LOFT Experimental Program written by and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Loss-of-Fluid Test (LOFT) facility, operated by EG and G Idaho, Inc., for the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission, is designed as an integral test facility to study the behavior of commercial pressurized water reactors (PWRs) during a loss-of-coolant accident (LOCA). For this mission, six nuclear and one nonnuclear test series have been proposed to provide data on PWR transient behavior, but plans must be recognized as tentative and subject to change for a number of reasons. The Nonnuclear Test Series, completed in April 1978, consisted of six loss-of-coolant experiments (LOCEs) performed with isothermal primary coolant temperatures. The Power Ascension Test Series, Series L2, proposes five LOCEs, simulating double-ended cold leg breaks (DECLB), to provide a controlled power escalation to a peak power of 52.49 kW/m. The Small and Intermediate Breaks Test Series, Series L3, will consist of three LOCEs designed to study the effects of smaller primary coolant system ruptures. These tests will be initiated by cold leg ruptures ranging from scaled 6.4-cm pipe ruptures to scaled 0.05-m/sup 2/ pipe cracks. Five LOCEs are proposed for the Alternate Emergency Core Cooling Systems (ECCS) Test Series, designated Series L4. These DECLBs will be used to study systems such as lower plenum emergency core coolant injection, hot leg injection, and combined hot and cold leg injection. Also included in the L4 series is a test involving upper plenum-downcomer pressure equalization valves. The Hot Leg Rupture Test Series, Series L5, will study PWR behavior during a double-ended hot leg rupture.

Book Loss of fluid Test LOFT Facility

Download or read book Loss of fluid Test LOFT Facility written by and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Loss-of-Fluid Test (LOFT) facility is a 50 MW(t), volumetrically scaled, pressurized water reactor (PWR) system. The LOFT facility was designed to study the engineered safety features (ESF) in commercial PWR systems as to their response to the postulated loss-of-coolant accident (LOCA). With recognition of the differences in commercial PWR designs and inherent distortions in reduced scale systems, the design objective for the LOFT facility was to produce the significant thermal-hydraulic phenomena that would occur in commercial PWR systems in the same sequence and with approximately the same time frames and magnitudes. The information acquired from loss-of-coolant experiments (LOCE) is thus used for evaluation and development of LOCA analytical methods and assessment of the quantitative margins of safety provided by the ESFs when responding to a LOCA. The design and current experience with the LOFT facility is described in relation to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission's (NRC) research program. Expectations for use of the LOFT facility with emphasis on the types of informaion currently of greatest importance are also described.
