Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Locomotive Mechanism and Engineering There are many excellent books on the locomotive, but there is one portion of the subject which, in the author's opinion, has not yet been covered. The man who wishes to understand an engine thor oughly will learn more by watching repairs made in the. Shop, or in case of accident on the road, when the engine is disconnected, than if the method were de scribed to him in SO many words; for he thus sees the actual construction, break, and repairs. Book A Manual of Locomotive Engineering

Download or read book A Manual of Locomotive Engineering written by William Frank Pettigrew and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-12 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of Locomotive Engineering: With an Historical Introduction IN this work the Locomotive Engine is looked at chiefly from the point of view of the Designer or Locomotive Draughtsman, and the scope and treatment have been mainly determined with reference to his needs. The require ments of the Engineer generally, who may desire to ascertain the practice of the Locomotive Engineer, and the needs of the Student have, however, also been kept steadily in view. The aim has been not only to set out the most successful and generally approved modern practice, but to set it out in such manner as to aid in its intelligent adaptation, in accordance with general mechanical principles, to changed conditions or to further development. At the same time the book is intended to be of a thoroughly practical nature; and the calculations which it has been necessary to employ are accordingly suited, as far as possible, for every day use in the Engineer's Drawing Omoe. There is given, after a brief historical introduction, an enumeration of particulars concerning the leading types and classes of locomotives at present in use in this country, both simple and compound. This is followed by a description of the methods of determining those factors or elements in the design of a locomotive which in large measure furnish the data for the subsequent working out of detail, but which themselves arise immediately from the conditions as to speed, loads, character of the roads, and so forth, prescribed, it may almost be said, to the Locomotive Engineer from with out. The detailed construction and design of the various parts and fittings of the modern locomotive are then dealt with in a series of chapters ending with the eighteenth, and material for a comparison between British and foreign practice is also afforded by the chapter on American and Continental locomotives. Book Railway and Locomotive Engineering Vol 40

Download or read book Railway and Locomotive Engineering Vol 40 written by Angus Sinclair Company and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-26 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Railway and Locomotive Engineering, Vol. 40: January December, 1927 We have found that inspectors frequently take out wheels for cracked plates when in reality the-plates are not cracked, there is simply a line on the surface which looks something like a crack. However, this is such a dangerous defect that I do not believe we should tell an inspector to take any chances. If inspection at the wheel shop shows it is not cracked, it can be put back in serv ice, but even here care must be used. Serious as the cracked plate problem is, I believe the introduction of the single plate wheel, and certain improvements in brak ing practice, are going to practically solve it. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Catechism of the Locomotive The first edition of the Catechism of the Locomotive was written in 1873. Since then many changes and improvements have been made in the construction of locomotives, so that in preparing a second edition of the book the first one had to be thoroughly revised, and to a great extent rewritten, and a great deal of entirely new matter had to be added to bring it up to the present state of the art of locomotive engineering. Most of the illustrations are entirely new, and have been selected from the latest practice in this country. Additional chapters have been added on Force and Motion; Resolution of Motion and Forces; the Principles of the Lever; the Action of the Piston, connecting-rod and Crank; Action of the Pistons, Cranks and driving-wheels; the Westinghouse Air Brake; the Care and Use of air-brakes; and the Eames Vacuum Driving Wheel Brake. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Locomotive Performance: The Result of a Series of Researches Conducted by the Engineering Laboratory of Purdue University The purpose of this volume is to combine the most important of these results with other material not before published, and thus make a permanent and accessible record of the work Of the labora tory. If it should appear that the pages have been burdened with too great an array of detail, it should be remembered that many prefer such a minute presentation Of facts as will enable them to work out conclusions for themselves. Primarily, the volume is de signed as a record rather than a text, though it is hoped that, it will prove Of interest and value to any who wish to increase their acquaintance with the action of steam locomotives. As a whole, the researches are the outcome of many The trustees and president of the University have supplied means, professors and instructors have assisted in working out the problems Of the laboratory, students have given their aid as observers, and in addition to these, skilled assistants have had a part in checking, and arranging data. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Trips in the Life of a Locomotive Engineer Railroad men, too long looked upon as the rougher kind of humanity, have been the subjects of severe condemnation and reproach upon the occurrence of every disaster, while their skill, bravery and presence of mind have scarcely ever found a chronicler. The writer ventures to assert, that if the record of their noble deeds were all gathered, and presented in their true light, it would be found that these rough, and weather-worn men were entitled to as high a place, and a fame as lofty, as has been allotted to any other class who cope with disaster. Book The Railway Locomotive

Download or read book The Railway Locomotive written by Vaughan Pendred and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-11 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Railway Locomotive: What It Is and Why It Is What It Is The literature of the railway locomotive engine is already so copious that I think some explanation of how this book came to be written is desirable. It forms one of a series of volumes, the idea of publishing which originated with Messrs. Archibald Constable Co. In the present day specialisation is universal, and in no profession does it prevail more than in that of engineering. This will not appear remarkable when we recognise the enormous range of subjects with which the engineer has to deal. The Westminster series is intended in a sense to bridge over the gaps left by specialisation. Thus the marine engineer may have but a very slight knowledge of electrical engineering, and the civil engineer may be comparatively ignorant concerning the locomotives which run on the railways which he makes. But engineers should have - the younger members of the profession in particular need to have - a great deal of information in common, and all perfectly understand technical language. Speaking then of my own work, I may say that I hope engineers in any branch of the profession who may read this book will find in it information which they did not possess before. The books which have hitherto been written about the locomotive engine are all either strictly specialised or very popular. None of them go far into the life of the locomotive engine. The technical treatise deals with the locomotive almost altogether as a machine. Its parts are described, but the reasons why they assume particular Shapes, and why one shape is better or worse than another are not dwelt upon, and nothing is said about the daily life of the engine. To use a metaphor, the locomotive is handled by its authors anatomically, not physiologically. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Railway and Locomotive Engineering 1923 Vol 36

Download or read book Railway and Locomotive Engineering 1923 Vol 36 written by Angus Sinclair Company and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-07-05 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Railway and Locomotive Engineering, 1923, Vol. 36: A Practical Journal of Motive Power, Rolling Stock and Appliances The American Locomotive Company recently delivered to the Lehigh New England Railroad four Consolida tion type locomotives that are the heaviest and most powerful 2-8 - 0 type engines ever constructed. The Consolidation type was a popular type of freight engine for a long period, but it has been largely super seded by the Mikado or 2-8-2 type locomotive in which the introduction of the trailing truck permits the use of a deeper firebox and longer boiler barrel with cor responding increase ia boiler capacity. With equal weights on driving wheels and equal ratios of adhesion, a Mikado type locomotive will show no superiority over a Consolidation at starting; but as the speed increases. The tractive force of the Mikado will fall off less rapidly than that of the Consolidation, because of the greater boiler power of the 2-8-2 type. The Consolidation, however, is still a very desirable type especially for heavy drag service where slow speeds will suffice, and where road clearances do not impose too many restrictions, by careful design a high capacity boiler may be obtained. The following are the principal dimensions of these locomotives. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book Locomotive Compounding and Superheating written by J. F. Gairns and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-24 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Locomotive Compounding and Superheating: A Practical Text-Book for the Use of Railway and Locomotive Engineers, Students, and Draughtsmen IT is now just upon thirty years since the first practical compound locomotives were built, but even yet the compound locomotive does not occupy the universally accepted position which theory would suggest that it should do. But whereas in the early years of its existence as a definite feature of locomotive engineering practice it was looked upon in most quarters with disfavour and distrust, and the engineers first concerned with the design of such engines had to contend against prejudice and opposition, and had no easy task to obtain even a trial of their systems, now the position is far more favourable, and compound locomotives according to many different systems are today in use to the number of many thousands in various parts of the world. In fact, it is not claiming too much to say that the compound locomotive occupies to-day an assured position, and it is probable that before many years have passed it will become a standard feature of locomotive engineering in all countries.
